Mongolian hot pot in the Asian restaurant

Recommended Posts

DH and I FINALLY tried the Asian restaurant on our last cruise on the Jewel. We have dined in Teppanyaki on every NCL cruise but never dined in the main Asian restaurant. Needless to say, we absolutely loved the Asian restaurant on the Jewel and it actually is one of our favorite surcharge restaurants after that first visit.

Now...we haven't ever tried the Mongolian Hot Pot in the Asian restaurant. Anyone try that? How is it? What do they serve? Do you cook your own food? Did you like it? Tell me everything. We may try it depending on what kind of responses we receive here.

Thanks,

coffeebean

Hi coffeebean,

Just off the Dawn but Bamboo does not offer this dish. Had it in Jan. on Gem and several other times. The Jewel, Pearl and Gem offer it so I guess the Jade probably does, too. Which ship are you taking?

It's actually Japanese "shabu shabu" which means "swish, swish". You are given a plate of very thinly cut meat (if you choose that), vegetables such as enoki bean sprouts, carrots, onions and a large pot of broth.

The waitstaff will help you get the cooking started (right in the middle of your table). You swish the beef, pick up some of the veggies from the boiling broth and dip it in a sauce and eat it with some rice. It is not spicy in any way.

After you're finished (you can have additional plates of food), they whisk it away, add noodles and present you with a flavorful soup.

I've had it numerous times in Japan and NCL does a pretty good rendition of the dish.

Not too many people know about it and those special tables are often available even last minute.

p.s. I see you've id'd Matt Baker on the Sky. His reliever was also Matt so there was some confusion on CC as a result. Matt B. is back from vaca but I don't know for how long.

Hi Barb...

We haven't booked a cruise yet but I'm glad you pointed out that not all the Asian restaurants have the special tables for the Mongolian Hot Pot. I guess it's just the Jewel class ships that are equipped for that type of meal. I looks to be a lot of fun and I love the dipping sauces we got for the appetizers in the main restaurant on Jewel.

I'm glad to see Matt Baker is back. DH and I will book what ever ship he is on and it doesn't matter where the ship is going. We like him that much and really enjoy his talent.

We HATED the shabu-shabu. We have 3 children- the waiter left our raw chicken on the same plate as the veggies. The veggies were supposed to be put in last- we had Salmonella concerns. Also, the broth was very hot and kept spurting out even when we lowered the temp all the way- it was the only meal we did not enjoy on the Jewel . Several times the kids got splashed with the hot liqiuid. From a sanitary and safety point of view it was appalling. Also, some waitress tehn came over and tossed a whole bunch of kale in with out asking us and again splashed the kids.

I will not take the kids there again.

The Teppanyaki and sushi were great, however

And please, posters- don't rail on me for my opinion! That is what the boards are all about- opinon and questions.

No flames.

Unfortunately sometimes servers are thrown into situations they are not trained for. I am sorry you did not like it.

I also do not like raw meat or poultry anywhere near my veggies. As I am sure you can attest to that did not happen in Teppenyaki, correct? I have never seen them mix protein with veggies there. The Teppenyaki chefs seem to be very well trained.

Sorry.

I can tell you they offer it on the Pearl in Lotus Garden, I believe. Our butler kept trying to get us to try it as he said it was out of this world good but we just ran out of time and did not get a chance to. When we go back on the Pearl I will have to give it a try as I have heard so many good things about it.

we had a table of 10 Asians who got the dutch oven put on the hot square in the center of the table which was plugged in. We saw noodles taking up 2 plates, a plate of beef, on of chicken, one of pork, then we saw what looked like cheese square going in, large lettuce looking stuff with the head quartered. One guy was the stirrer and added veggies before noodles. Then they got their chopticks digging stuff out onto plates.

I was enjoying 5 plates of 2 lobster tacos each. I much preferred that then what I was watching next to us. Not a stew person........

I believe your Lobster Tacos were in Tango's not in Chin Chin's. And Mongolian Hot Pot is not anything like stew...more like soup.

Why we anyone flame you for your opinion? Yes, if you come and blast away you get flamed, for giving your opinion of one experience is educational, nothing to get flamed about. We had an experience on the Jewel 3 years ago that wasn't terrible positive and wouldn't want to think I would have gotten flamed. I had ordered steak (main dining room) I like my meat rare and it came to me more than over cooked. The waitress noticed I wasn't eating it and asked if something was wrong. When I told her she took it back. Well the second steak came back still cold and only gray on the outside. I guess I pissed the cheif off!!! LOL

Hi, Sweet Nita!

I have had my share of being pillaried on the boards- offered my opinion of a certain concierge- I was offered psychiatric help!

Anyway, sometimes folks tend to get personal- like with the whole Fox News- CNN thing ( you said i could cruise with you!)

Have a great day!

I have a feeling the "cheese square" you mentioned was tofu. I'm not a fan of tofu so I wouldn't put that into the pot.

Yes, the Lobster Tacos are in the Tex Mex restaurant and they are delish. DH and I will always include the Tex Mex in our list of restaurants just for those tacos.

wrong food stated, but I did get lobster at Chin Chins with noodles and a great sauce that the Matre D from Dawn brought us telling to tell no one.

2 nights later was Tangos with the lobster tacos.

Hi coffeebean,

DH corrects me - the Gem does not have the shabu shabu tables but the other Jewel class ships do. I think someone made a boo boo on the Gem.;)

You're right - that "cheese square" is tofu.

Fortunately every time we've had this, the meat was definitely on a separate plate from the veggies. Heck, they wouldn't all have fit on the same platter.

We also have never had an sputtering problem. The wait staff has always controlled the temperature for us.

Barb...

The first time I noticed the "different" tables in the Asian restaurant was when we dined in the main part this past cruise on Jewel. I had never heard of Mongolian Hot Pot until this cruise. I've been on Pearl but never noticed the hot pot tables as we were escorted to Teppanyaki. Now I have to encourage DH to try the Hot Pot.

We tried the Mongolian Hot Pot on the Pearl and loved it! There’s an electric burner in the middle of the table where they heat up a large pot of broth. Only a few tables in the Lotus Garden were set up to accommodate the Hot Pot.

The meal starts w/ steamed edamame & a salad. Then you have a choice of either a platter of raw beef, tofu & vegetables that you cook in the pot, or something called a noodle bar, which is chicken broth w/ chicken breast, various noodles, 3 types of dumplings & vegetables that you cook in a pot. We tried the noodle bar & it was delicious!

I don't remember if our chicken was served on the same platter as the dumplings & vegetables, but everything went into the hot broth, so it's all getting cooked thoroughly.

I found a Hot Pot menu online from the Jade, which looks similar to the menu from the Pearl (thanks whoever posted this):

Thanks for posting the menu. I would love to try the noodle bar but I'm not sure I would be able to talk my husband into trying it. Did you order only one type of noodles and one type of dumplings or can you order a smaller order of all that is offered so you can sample everything??? I'd love to try all the dumplings.

coffeebean,

The noodle bar came with all three types of noodles and the three various dumplings. We enjoyed the dumplings so much that our waitress brought us seconds of each type. I'm not an adventurous eater but I really enjoyed this meal. There's nothing too out of the ordinary taste-wise. If there's a particular ingredient your husband doesn't enjoy, you can just leave it out of the broth.

Lucy...

I'm not sure if DH would like a meal of "soup" although I know it's much more than that. Did they serve dipping sauces with the meal?

I love Shabu-Shabu and am excited to read it will be available on the Jewel! Shabu Shabu should not "splash". Some people may be more familar with Sukiyaki which comes to the table with the ingredients already in the pot. Shabu Shabu is more fun, has a sweeter broth and usually 2 different dipping sauces. Can't wait!!

coffeebean,

There are at least 2 sauces with the beef & vegetables & rice plate.

You remove all the liquid when you take out your food from the broth so not at all like eating soup.

However, they will prepare a soup after you're finished if you still have room for it.;):D

BTW, for appetizers you just choose from the Asian menu. Same with dessert.
