Missed Grand Caymen

Carnival is good to refund your port charges... don't expect anything more. Not even if they purposefully and quietly board you onto a ship with known damage and then proceed to miss highlights/ports.

A cruise is guaranteed to get you from point A to point B... or in the case of round-trip, back to point A. And that's all I expect when I book Carnival.

Anything else, such as stopping at ports, is just a bonus.:D

Are you saying the left early and stranded 30% of the passengers?

I believe she was on Liberty the week before me. The dancers were telling me that they had to leave Cayman early. They sent crew members ashore trying to find people and get them back to the ship. (I don't know how they did that?) They said it was a mess.

We just returned home from the Liberty. It was disappointing to miss GC this week, we were really looking forward to it. It was odd that there were tenders (5 of them) right next to the boat waiting for us to get on, when they announced they were canceling the port. Has this happened often?

We were told by crew members it is not unusual. Apparently, it is not always the weather. Usually it is the Grand Cayman Port Authority.

I definitely can see being bummed that you missed the port, you were planning it as part of your vacation! But, we always keep in mind that things can change at a moments notice.

I think it is great the Carnival gives the $20.00 OBC.

It's not unusual for Cayman to be cancelled due to rough seas. It is especially true during the October-January time period. It's not so much at the ship where the problem is, but rather, bringing the tenders ashore. The reefs are very shallow around the island and the waves can be very rough.

While it's always disappointing, the first concern of the Captain is the safety of the ship and it's passengers.

Sometimes, it's the Director of Cruise Operations (a local) on Cayman who determines it's too rough.

This is not uncommon for GC when a strong cold front pushes into the Caribbean (yes, they do have cold fronts). The recent front brough dozens of record lows to Florida....some all time records for October! The front moved all the way through the Western Caribbean and brought a strong north wind to GC...they will cancel the island every time this happens. The good news, this front was strong enough to stop the flooding rains in Belize.

I say yes. This was probably done to avoid injury, or worse, death. Possibly yours. What's that worth?

I guess I've been extremely lucky....I've never missed GC.

But I know from reading these boards it can happen. Since I've already been there several times, I'll just enjoy the ship if it happens to me!

(Back at ya, Debra!!!)

Hi Rick and James, I have friends that have missed the port of GC every time they've been there (which is many) the one time they COULD have tendered she was sick and her sweet hubby stayed with her, awwwwwwwwww sweet.

Anyway it's a beautiful port, snorkling is lovely, so they use that as an excuse to keep booking for the next time:D, one day they'll make it!!!

I think when you sail during hurricane season you need to be able to roll with the changes and expect not to make the ports stated, if you do it's gravy.

It's really awesome that Carnival gives you your port charges back though!!!! The 20.00 was a good will gesture, maybe write a nice thank you letter to them to show appreciation for their gesture.

Just like starting a thread on CC, you gotta have thick skin!!

Hey DrJack, thanks for the mute tip, I really didn't know, and that one gets my bp pumping. :D

Happy sailing, Carole

So for those who have missed a port of call, what do you on that day--do you visit the casino when you wouldn't have? Or the spa? What do you do to make that day "special"?

Maybe they'll have an impromptu art auction???!!! ROFLMAO

BTW....did your artwork arrive yet??

We will be cruising in Jan. on the Freedom--This will be one of our stops. Does anyone know how often ships can't tender in? I remember one year on Norweigan--the tender ride was really rough. Does Carnival ever just skip cayman and replace it another port. ??? Thanx

It's really pretty there but to me it's just a Glorified Florida,...The beach are beautiful and the snorkling is really good, but everything is really expensive there and they will not bargain with you at all....As many times as I have been thru there we have never missed going ashore, but now I just stay on board there and in Nassau.....Dennis

If Carnival is responsible for the high waves or the wind, then I would say no, $20 is not enough. If however Carnival is not responsible for the high waves or wind, then I would hold out for $25.
Just curious, what happens if you've purchased your Shore Excursion through Carnival and you miss the Grand Cayman tender? Our other two ports are non-Carnival excursions, but for GC I'm scheduled for two excursions. I'm assuming they refund your money, but is it OBC or what?

Thanks,
Kristie
71 days and counting!
If you booked online before the cruise... you'll get refundable OBC... which means you'll get it refunded if you haven't spent it on the ship.
Probably the same if you booked on the ship.... not 100% sure of that, though!!

Even quicker way to ignore is click the persons avatar, then click "add (users name her) to your ignore list". Might be a little quicker way. BTw here is carnivals policy:

If safety, scheduling or other concerns prevent the ship from calling on an alternative port, Carnival shall promptly provide written notice of the elimination of the scheduled port to the guests as well as announcing the change in the Carnival Capers and via the public address system. The written notice shall also offer a shipboard credit of $20.00 (U.S.D.) per person to be reflected on the sail and sign account.

Still trying to figure this out--is the $20 OBC the refund of the port charges, or do you get that in addition to the refund of the port charges? And it's per person, right? We'll have 2 adults/2 kids, so that $80 would go a long way!

momofzeke and sherrimjemison--must be left coast day on the boards (or at least this thread)! I'm a UO alum now living just across the river from PDX and "enjoyed" the rain last night, too (though no thunder/lightening for us). But hey, we had the best Halloween night weather I can remember, so no complaints here.

Policy says obc of 20 usd. It doesnt say anything about the return port charges. Check my previous post cause it provides link for the full carnival policy.

I only read the first post and not the entire thread... but my answer...
WOW!! A cruise line gave OBC for missing a port for reasons beyond their control? Didn't happen to me when I missed a port before due to high winds and tendering safety. Passenger safety usually comes first. For weather related decisions, I usually say to take those concerns to the big guy upstairs (and nope, I'm not referring to the CEO of Carnival).
