we were booked on fantasy for 11-6-08 departure. i had to have emergency back surgery in this date. we did not get insurance on the cruise. what is the likelihood that they will let us deffer and reschedule our cruise?

our friends went without us. after waking up from my surgery, i noticed there was a hurricane near Jamaica. this was there first cruise. anyone know if the cruise was diverted or if it was rough or excursions canceled in Cozumel?

While we understand that Carnival certainly isn't under any obligation to defer this to another cruise....I would suggest that you write a well worded letter to Guest Relations and see what happens.

I would start by being very complimentary about past Carnival cruises...and then say "however, the reason for my letter is....and briefly explain your situation.

I would send it snail mail...not email.

Here is the Address:

Guest Relations

Carnival Cruise Lines

Carnival Place

3655 NW 87 Avenue

Miami, Fl. 33178-2428

Good luck and I hope you recover quickly and completely.

I agree with LHP!!

OP...send a letter....explain the situation.....you have nothing to lose. The worst that you can get is a "no". It is definately worth a try. They do make exceptions - based on circumstances.

It worked for us!!

?

So you did not get the insurance but want the benefits of it?

As a stockholder and with our current stock price why they would offer you anything is beyond me.This was low season, they got your money and that is it.

I just wanted to clarify: did you call and cancel before the cruise or did you just not show up?

I think if you called before 11/06/08 and told them you needed to have surgery, you may be able to get a credit toward a future cruise with them.

If you didn't call and didn't show up, I think the chances of you getting anything back is slim.

The Fantasy wasn't impacted by the hurricane. (the hurricane is going from Jamaica over Cuba and then to the Bahamas.... it's kinda going reverse of what a normal hurricane goes...)

Well it should be that way.

Let me ask you......what is the purpose of the insurance then?

Do you have auto insurance or do you wait until you get into an accident and then ask the carrier to extend coverage to you.

Thank goodness some folks at Carnival are more understanding and helpful than you!

Hmmmm.....good thought....in our case I was able to call and cancel . No contact with Carnival prior to sailing could change the situation.

What part of no insurance should mean no coverage our we having trouble understanding here?

What understanding is needed on the part of CCL? OP cruise's at a cheap time, doesn't purchase insurance and then have.s a problem.

Why would anyone purchase insurance then?

Cruisecruisecruise has a point, why would anyone buy insurance if they can get the company to go ahead and give them a cruise anyways.

I walked away from an Italy tour last year to the tune of $10K because I was evacuated from the fires. We were fortunate, our house did not burn as did 82 others in my neighborhood, but we were not allowed back into our house until after the trip departed. No passport, no go. Ask me how much money I got back. A big zero!

Now I buy insurance.

I have no problem understanding your point .

It was my CVS who suggested that I contact Guest Relations to explain our situation - I had never given it a thought. And thankfully Carnival is understanding....and helpful...in at least some situations.

OP...do not let this discourage you. Write the letter and hopefully Carnival will allow you a credit toward a future cruise when you a feeling better.

Considering I deal in Personal injury and insurance almost daily it is cut and dry as to what is listed in a policy or lack there off.

It is a stupid company who sets a precedent by doing something like that.

But I thank you.I will print out this thread and any others that ever stated that they made an exception and I will use it against them at a later date when I need to.:)

Can you be a witness?

especially in the winter because Pittsburge gets cold.

Which cruise was it?

Spirit - February 2009

Splendor - November 2008

Legend - February 2007

Triumph - February 2006

Destiny - February 2005

Glory - March 2004

Pride - February 2002

Just kidding.Not really,well mayby,mayby not

i feel like i have no argument with carnival. i decided on my own not to purchase the insurance. fwiw, i did cancel 1.5 days before leaving, and i do have a letter from my surgeon. this was truely an emergency! i checked the day the cruise left, and there were still cabins available in our category...ie the cruise was not sold out. here is my other thought. the cruise cost me $337 x 2= 674. that is not much money for these short cruises. carnival makes their money by selling us the drink cards, casino, massages, drinks, excursions etc etc...our bill is usually as much as the cruise. also, i checked on the same cruise in January, and it is $110 cheaper, plus the fuel supplement may be taken off then. therefor they would be making $220 right there. so, i feel as though they did not lose a sell b/c the ship was not sold out, plus they can still have the potential to make some more money from my family. also, we have others that want to book rooms with us if we go. again, i understand carnivals posiion, and i would not hold their decision against them. we love carnival, and we would cruise any other line...except disney while the kids are really young.

OP,

Thank you for coming back and responding.

I understand your logic. You figure since the ship was not full they did not lose out on a cabin sale,or the right to resell your cabin.

In order for your logic to work, they would need to give you short notice when they have another ship sailing with empty cabins so you can occupy one of them and then spend money on board so they make money off your sailing expenses.

End result, they got your money for a cabin, you do sail, and you do spend.

Good luck in your attempt. Please let us know how it works out.

Well First of i Hope you have a full recovery from your Surgery...:)

Second I agree with it cant hurt to ask ...No CCL does not have to do anything for you, but I have heard several people with the same kind of situation where they had to cancel just prior to saining and were givin credit of some sort towards future cruise's I hope this works out well for you
