PHXscuba Posted March 25, 2009 #26 Share Posted March 25, 2009 Thanks to those who posted Chilkoot's prices. It'll be about $600 for our family on the short tour vs. $885 on the long. I know the price will rise for next year, but the difference between the two was mainly what I needed to know at this point. It's nice that they charge about 1/3 less for kids. I have to save more pennies for my Alaska excursions ... PHXscuba
Loblolly_Cruiser Posted March 26, 2009 #27 Share Posted March 26, 2009 On the strength of posts in this forum (sort of...) we also booked the 7hr tour for $175 ea. It was sort of a toss up as to whether we wanted to spend most of the day hanging around in Skagway, a very interesting and historic town, or see more of the interior, wildlife, etc. I'm the history buff, the wife is the furry little critter lover - you see who won that debate...
Tig Posted March 26, 2009 #28 Share Posted March 26, 2009 We have twelve of us scheduled to take this tour on June 9th. From all these posts it sounds like it will be a great excursion for us. Thanks for all the info.
dustyroad Posted March 26, 2009 #29 Share Posted March 26, 2009 i have been cut back to 30 hrs a week:eek:. it is going to be a tough time to make ends meet but i already have everything paid off on my cc card for the cruise. the chilkoot tour is the only one i was going to take on this trip and i decided to keep it and enjoy the day in skagway and the area we go too on the tour. i really think it is going to be a great time and i am really looking foward to doing it. they say on the way up the mt set on the left side of the train. and on the way back set on the right side of the transportation. you get the best views that way. of course now on the ship i will be drinking the free tea they offer and not joining the spa specieal for the week. but i am going to have a wonderful cruise and cant wait to go. I would rather go on the cheap, then not at all. ;) Have a blast! this will be my 3rd time to alaska so i know i can browse in the shops and wander around in the ports, or stay on the ship and relax. it doesnt take alot of extra money if you stay out of the casino ( which i dont do since there are 3 gambling boats 25 miles from my house i can waste money at ). im not a big drinker so my bar tab will be almost nothing, i hate my pix taken so i dont buy the photos and i stay away from the art auction unless i want a free glass of champainge. i am really happy to just be on the ship and see the scenery and meet new people. i know i am going to have a great time. Anthrogeek Posted March 28, 2009 #32 Share Posted March 28, 2009 My parents and I just booked our first cruise to Alaska today for early September and we plan on doing the 7 hr. Chilkoot tour. I would like to know how long we stop at Caribou Crossing, since my mother wants to go gold panning there and we are wondering if there's enough time to go do that. Also, has anyone done the gold panning there? Is it worth doing or should we go somewhere else? Thanks for any information anyone can give me!:D
TexasJam Posted March 30, 2009 #33 Share Posted March 30, 2009 We have also booked the 7 hour tour for August. Thinking about adding the dog sled ride. Has anyone ever done it? Jamie

Jamie i would call and find out if the dog sled is on wheels at that time of year because of the lack of snow. i could be wrong ,but if a real sled ride is what you are after i would double check. have a great time. It's definitely dog CARTS rather than sleds.
Yukon Posted March 31, 2009 #36 Share Posted March 31, 2009 i would call and find out if the dog sled is on wheels at that time of year because of the lack of snow. That "dog sled" ride is always on wheels - still fun but way different.

Yes - the train to Fraser goes several miles farther than the train that goes to the White Pass Summit.
