We were onboard to experience this...and am attaching the article and photograph from the HAL blog, then some of our photographs taken from ms Westerdam. Can you see my kids and me on the Observation Deck? :)

Westerdam Participates in Dutch Navy Exercise

Alexander | April 22nd, 2009

Recently, ms Westerdam acted as sparring partner in an exercise involving the Dutch Navy frigate Hr.Ms. Van Amstel off of Sint Maarten. The frigate presently is deployed in “the West,” acting in counter drugs and coast guard operations in waters around Dutch islands Sint Maarten, Saba and Sint Eustatius.

Right after Westerdam left the port of Sint Maarten’s capital Philipsburg, the Hr.Ms. Van Amstel made a smooth maneuver in which she came alongside, with a helicopter flying close above both ships. This maneuver is normally done for transferring supplies.

Hr.Ms. Van Amstel ended the exercise with a sharp turn to port side, while both ships blew their horns.

You're all welcome. It was a fun event after a beautiful day on St. Martin (we went to Grand Case), and while difficult to tell, as many of the Dutch sailors as possible were on deck taking photographs of the Westerdam...while we photographed the Dutch ship! The maneuvers lasted quite awhile...I took the chopper photo from our balcony on the starboard side and zoomed it a bit, but the helicopter was quite close. Our kids thought it was great fun as well.
