MPs criticise swine flu management

June 3, 2009 - 6:59PM

Authorities have let the community down in the management and communication of swine flu cases, a Liberal senator says.

Specifically under scrutiny is NSW chief health officer Kerry Chant's decision to allow about 1,800 people to leave the Pacific Dawn cruise ship in Sydney on May 25, when swine flu test results for five passengers were still pending.

G/day

The Pacific Dawn is not currently quarantined & in my opinion was never quarantined. It was refused permission by the Queensland Goverment to dock, just like the Dawn Princess was refused permission to dock by another local goverment body. Can we please move on.

Thanks

Alan

A New Zealand woman who boarded the ship in Brisbane last week tested positive for influenza type A - a precursor to swine flu.

A New Zealander on board a cruise ship, due to dock in Auckland tomorrow, has tested positive for influenza A.

The woman joined the P&O cruise ship Pacific Sun in Brisbane on May 27, and three days later developed flu-like symptoms, the Northern Region Health Coordination Centre said in a statement.

Health experts in New Zealand say a cruise ship passenger who has tested positive for swine flu could herald a flood of infected travellers arriving in the country.

To be quarantined is enforced isolation for health reasons. As such, Pacific Dawn was quarantined at the end and beginning of its last cruise in Sydney, when passengers were unable to board or alight while health assessment was underway.

It was again quarantined from land some days later in Queensland as the restriction was applied for health reasons, and those departing in Brisbane were also quarantined for 7 days. Queensland can't tell a ship where it has to go when at sea, but the fact was that it was quarantined from its intended ports and as a result the entire cruise was cut short.

I wonder if they would let you board if you actually did rock up to the ship dressed like that...or wearing a pig mask :D.

hey rose, I love trying to look at your pics in your sig but they go a bit too quick. Are you able to slow them down?

Australian health authorities cleared passengers on the Dawn Princess cruise ship of swine flu and said they can disembark when it docks in Sydney tomorrow, as the number of confirmed cases in the country reached 636.

THE cruise liner Dawn Princess has arrived in Sydney and its passengers have disembarked after escaping a swine flu scare that prevented it making a scheduled stop in New Caledonia.

Hi Thied,

I must admit, to date, I havent been overly interested in this swine flu thing, hoping that it was a short term scenario......but, I too read this elsewhere. I also read that some contacts, not on cruises mind you, but some contacts, are being 'sheltered' for 72 hours, which is the incubation period it seems. Wonder if this explains the 3 day period you are referring to.

All I can say is....Come on Summer !!!!

Cheers,

Bob and Jen
