Cheese Plate

I know this is probably a strange question, and it definitely won't make or break my cruise, but can anyone tell me what kinds of cheeses are on the cheese plate? DH and I are sort of cheese snobs and really enjoy nice cheeses. I mean, I guess I could just wait and find out in September, but when I saw they had a cheese plate on the dessert menu I got a little giddy and now I'm curious. :p

DH and I like to go to local cheese shops that carry artisan cheeses and try new ones out from time to time. But we've been stuck on one particular bleu for some time now. It's Rogue Creamery's Echo Mountain Blue and it's FABULOUS!!!

 

I won't expect that on the cruise, though. LOL

Man!!! That is fantastic!!! I am so glad that you took and posted a picture of the cheeses!!! I have ALWAYS wondered...exactly WHAT that consisted of...but have never seen anyone order it. We always do sweets on the cruise!

God I LOVE the cheese plate...too bad it wasn't on the last cruise (RCI) I was on. Yeesh.

 

That picture above is a thing of beauty.

 

 

On every RCI cruise that we've been on the cheese plate was available through room service, we ordered one along with a fruit plate every evening as a pre-dinner snack while we sat on our balcony. Now I'm not sure if it was available in the dining room because I never looked for it.

Oh, well done for starting this thread. I perhaps can beat anyone at being a cheese snob, more than a snob, I'm obsessed! although in all fairness I don't eat meat, so oh well.

 

In fact, I come from rural Devon in England and we have lots of local artisan cheeses. My mum mades a couple of really nice ones, one from ewes milk. She does sell them to locals if people come to the farm. Maybe I should get her to market them to the ship! :D

 

What they have here obviously is a pretty standard selection which will be safe with most people. Most people are bound to be fond of at least a couple of this cheeses. Now, in England all this platters tend to contain our staple cheese which is called Cheddar, normally a mature good quality version. Obviously they have gone more for European cheeses here.

 

We'll definitely order it though.

Bless you folks who love those fancy cheeses. I found out on our last cruise that I am the exact opposite of a cheese snob! I ordered the cheese plate in the supper club just to see what it was like. After biting into one of the more "aromatic" selections, I immediately wished that I had gotten the chocolate plate. From now on I will stick to my Velveeta and Kraft Singles. :D

If the ship you're on has a supper club and you plan to dine there, they bring the cheese on a cart and you select the ones you want. Quite a good assortment.

Oh, England has a lot of artisans cheeses produced locally that you don't really see in supermarkets. You either go to the farm, they normally sell organic sausages and stuff like that, farmer markets or specialist market stalls and deli shops. I agree with you. I wonder whether the supper club serves anything like that since for what I have seen of their food (other people's pics) is pretty gourmet. I mean obviously they would have to import them from a relatively large producer for it to be worthwhile for the manufacturer to export.

 

There is a show that you would love if you ever come to England. It's held towards the end of September in Blenheim Palace (near Oxford). This stately home is incidentally the birth place of Winston Churchill and they host a huge cheese farmers fair, biggest in the UK. It's only once a year though. They sell and give samples also of traditional, ales, meads, traditionally roasted meats etc. You sound as if you would love this.

 

I certainly like traditional stuff like that. Before we moved to NY we lived in central London and you had to pay a lot for that kind of stuff, much cheaper locally.

Okay, I'll admit it, I'm a cheese ignoramous. What is that in the picture at about 4:00 (if the plate was a clock)?

That looks to me as if it could be Emmenthal or Grugere (both are Swish), although without seeing it in real life is hard to tell. It's a medium / hard nutty type.

I've ordered the cheese plate in the supper club. They bring out a cart loaded up with many, many different types of cheeses and they tell you what each one is. After making my selections, I was asked by the waitress if I wanted the cheese from the 'morning' milk or the 'evening' milk-all apparently by the same cow for one particular cheese.

 

After I made my selections, she proceeded to cut huge portions-about a quarter of a pound each and place them on my plate. It was so much that I could really only sample each one. What a waste. In retrospect, maybe I should have asked for a doggie bag.

 

I also always order the cheese plate in the dining room-I don't really do sweets. The portion sizes are large IMO and the cheese is good. Thanks to nolaAlive for the pic which shows what the cheese plate actually looks like. I have pics, but just don't feel like going there. Enjoy the cheese!

Oh, it's good, trust me on that. I'm getting hungry as well :) If you do the supper club, order the cheese platter, it's good stuff. And to DarthGrady, bless YOUR heart. My DH is also a Velveeta kind of guy. He also likes the sprayable Cheezwhiz ;) which I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole, God bless him too.

We love the cheese plate with a glass of wine in our cabin after a long full day....

I'm not sure, but it may be on the room service menu.... We've just always ordered it along with our dessert at dinner (not going to give up that Grand Marnier souffle!). We just asked our waiter to please bring us a cheese plate "for our room". He would bring it on a nice covered plate just as we left the MDR. We'd pop it in the fridge or cooler in our room, freshen up a little, and head out for the show and casino.

Then come back to the cabin for a little wine and cheese before bed.

Now that's a good ending to a good day!

Sadly, on the Holiday in March, it was the same variety of pre-packaged chain grocery store cheese every night, never any different kinds.... I love good gourmet cheeses, and this is one place Carnival falls far short on, compared to Princess & RCL who both have a rotating variety of cheeses each evening..... I didn't give up ordering the cheese plate, but by the end of the cruise, any different cheese would have been welcomed.... Even Velveeta ~~!!~~
