Sneezykevina Posted July 5, 2009 #27 Share Posted July 5, 2009 I wore jean shorts 2 nights, dress pants formal night and jeans the other nights. What people wear, even on formal night does not bother me. My dinner tastes just as good as the other nights. We got home on the 4th of July on a canadian cruise. ChefSusan Posted July 5, 2009 #28 Share Posted July 5, 2009 My husband wore shorts four nights when we dined in the dining room on Legend, then switched to slacks for the two formal nights and our amazing dinner at The Supper Club.
tunafish Posted July 5, 2009 #29 Share Posted July 5, 2009 We have never worn shorts to dinner on any of our cruises - but the fact remains, some people pack ONLY shorts for regular dinner nights, and it is 100% WRONG for them to be told not to wear shorts and for insulting remarks to be made about people who do wear shorts. I would be very upset if I was sitting at a table wearing shorts (per the new dress code) and the Maitre D made a comment over the microphone saying he doesn't want to see people in his dining room in shorts. The dress code is there for a reason, and people following it should not be insulted. Oh, and for the record, I saw MANY, MANY people wearing Crocs to dinner on our last 4 or 5 cruises. I didn't think anything of it, to me it's no different than wearing sandals or tennis shoes, which many people were also wearing. he said it the very first night when no dress code were in place. He said tonight is fine, but I do not want to see any hairy legs tomorrow. I have to admit Tuesday was a formal night. I do not know, it made me smile... Rowan555 Posted July 5, 2009 #30 Share Posted July 5, 2009 probably, the issue of people in shorts sitting next to the girls in evening gowns... maybe it bugs him, how do I know? Maybe he felt like a clown to dress up each night, right? That's an "issue"? If a "girl" chooses to wear an evening gown to dinner on a casual night and gets upset if someone at her table is wearing shorts, then I would dare say she is the one with the issue and should get over herself. No one deserves to be made to feel bad about their attire when they are dressing according to the stated dress code.

As I said, I do not care, majority look good and that's important. For 5 day cruises I stopped packing tie suits, just dress pants and a sports jacket and I would never pack a tux for any carnival cruise. CArnival says you can wear tux, but it would look so out of place on any fun ship. in my opinion.
S.S.Oceanlover Posted July 5, 2009 #32 Share Posted July 5, 2009 June 2009 Wow! I agree with Rowan. If CCL states shorts are acceptable and I pack accordingly then get on the ship and the Maitre'd announces no shorts I would think he'd have a half empty dining room every night and some upset pax. Perhaps he said it in jest while wishing that no shorts would be worn. Who knows. Bill

CArnival says you can wear tux, but it would look so out of place on any fun ship. in my opinion. I have seen MANY people wearing flip flops and shorts on formal night - usually it's the people who choose not to go to the dining room, or who have not yet dressed for their late seating dinner. On our last cruise, dh and I were walking down the promenade deck in our formal wear getting portraits taken, while people in swimsuits and other beach wear walked alongside us or sat outside the casino. Perhaps this bothers some people - but that's the way it works on Carnival. I also don't think tuxes look "out of place" - if a couple wants to dress in true formal wear, then they should go for it and enjoy themselves - even if they're just doing it for the photo ops! What other people are wearing should have NO bearing whatsoever on that. There are many cruise lines with more stringent dress codes, and who require EVERYONE to wear formal wear throughout the ship, all evening on formal nights - perhaps if someone is that worried about the attire of their fellow pax, they should choose such a cruise line. mousey Posted July 6, 2009 #35 Share Posted July 6, 2009 May I ask if men wore the plaid bermuda shorts or just solid colored Khaki type shorts, and on the night you wore a collared shirt and dress pants was it a long sleeved dress shirt or just a nice collared shirt? I am asking for our son and son-in-law, we are taking our grown kids and they both have infants and toddlers so we will be strapped for luggage space. We can alway's go to the buffet and they do own tuxes, but I just wanted to inquire to those of you that have cruised recently. Hi, we were on the Triumph this past spring break. My DH and DS wore nice shorts, both plaid and solid colored ones. They also wore collared golf-type shirts. On formal nights the DH wore nice dress shirts, long-sleeved one night, short-sleeved the other, no tie either night. The DS (13) wore collared-golf type shirts and long pants on formal nights. I hope this helps you out.:D Hope you have an awesome cruise!:D
Casino Player Posted July 6, 2009 #36 Share Posted July 6, 2009 We are leaving on the Liberty in less than a week (YIPPEE) are shorts allowed in the dining rooms? Not jean cut offs or anything like that. Nice shorts.... Thanks! I am not sure about during the summer months, I like to cruise mostly in the fall and sometimes in the spring, however, shorts at those times would be only if you want to freeze. It could get chilly. we3k9 Posted July 6, 2009 #39 Share Posted July 6, 2009 Shorts are definetly fine, I wore them every night except elegant night which I wore my best baggies and a hawaiin shirt and enjoyed all 8 lobster tails. Wow I didn't know you could get 8 lobster tails. I was thinking of ordering extra, but not 8 and wondered if I had to take the side dishes too or could they just put 3 tails on one plate and thats all. I guess I know the answer now. didnt intend to change subject of this thread, so YES I just saw carnival capers from a cruise last week that said on cruise casual attire shorts are permissable, no cut offs . Yea I could see how you think that an adult that follows the rules set out by the cruise line has no manners or style it is just rude I tell you.

If the host specifies in their dress code that shorts are allowed and you wear them you have no style or manners? Somehow the logic escapes me but having no style or manners I guess it would. Bill
bobsfamily Posted July 6, 2009 #42 Share Posted July 6, 2009 on our last cruise the Matre'D said that he doesn't want to see any man in shorts since we all have ugly legs. If he said that to me he would being looking at the nearest officer I could find explaining to him how I must have been mistaken in what I heard!!! RUDE is an understatement... Unless he was laughing and making a joke... that's one thing about posting a comment. You don't know the context. Which would still be uncalled for... cathyoo Posted July 6, 2009 #44 Share Posted July 6, 2009 A few weeks ago we went to dinner at Maggiano's. It was a last minute decision. My husband had shorts on and was worried. I told him not to be silly, it was summer and a week night he'd be fine. Of course you know it... the only other male in the room with shorts was a scruffy looking pre-teen. My DH was not happy. So yesterday (Sunday) we decide dinner at Maggiano's again. This time DH wore dockers and a button shirt. Of course the majority of men were in shorts. Sometimes you can't win for trying. I'm not a fan of the shorts in the dining room. I do think it adds something to the whole dinner routine to get dressed for a special meal. We enjoy going back to our room, talking about our day, making plans for our evening, taking a little nap, and getting dressed for dinner. I love all the things that make Carnival the fun ship but I do thing the more casual dress will lead to some changes in the dining room.

Those changes you think are going to happen have been happening long before the dress code changed. On one cruise on the Liberty before the dress code changed my son and I wore tuxes and our better halves wore nice gowns for formal nights. We were surrounded by people in jeans and flip flops and felt totally overdressed. That was the last time the tux has been worn on a CCL cruise. So I just commented on my comment card on that cruise and every CCL cruise after that to either enforce the dress code or change it. They chose the latter. I think it's been a long time coming.
