Boxed Wine?

I understand why you’re defensive…but, I’m not attacking you. I was just raising a thought. If you think that it’s impossible…that's OK with me.

But would it be worth their time and effort? IMO, it would be. Along with the casino, alcohol sales is one of their top revenue streams. They depend upon it to make the cruise profitable. If they flagged your luggage (along with others), you would come back here and report it. Would that stop it? No. But would it stop many from doing it? Yes. And I’m guessing that it would take 20 min a day…if they knew their way around the board. So again, I doubt they do it. But I can guarantee that they are interested in threads like this.

I didn't think you were attacking me...I took no offense. You were just pointing something out to me and I was essentially trying to see if it made any sense. You see the only way it would make sense is if they knew our cabin number. There are only a handful of posters on here that ever mention it and if they do there has to be an extremely small percentage of those few who ever talk about bringing wine on board....so I really though it would make no sense. I most likely will not bring it anyway....my husband gets a bit annoyed with my "over packed" luggage. If he had his way...he'd bring 2 pairs of everything in one duffel bag and that's it..........but, he has wife. ;)

Fair enough.:) I really wasn't even trying to discourage you. Infact, I may try the same thing. I was just trying to gauge peoples thoughts. I do however, think you might be surprised at how many people post their cabin numbers in roll call boards. (I know that if you looked, you would probably find mine somewhere)

Happy cruising!:)

Now that you mention it ....it's probably not a "good idea" to post one's cabin # here or anywhere for that matter.

Even if NCL confiscate the wine, I will not buy more alcohol for this reason. Yes, it will be great to enjoy a glass of wine on the balcony but I won't pay for it, I would simply drink pop, juice or water instead.

The wine box will be an extra to whatever alcohol I might purchase. In fact, they might even make MORE money out of me if I have a drink in my stateroom before dinner. When I am 100% sober, I often skip wine with dinner but if I already had a drink, I might be interested for a second at dinner time.

Isn't there a risk that the cabin steward would report someone who has smuggled wine on board? I love the idea about the box of wine, but if you left it in plain sight or even in the fridge, I would think that the steward may say something?

Has anyone had this experience? I've only been on one cruise, and we are set to go again in Feb and some ppl in our group are thinking about bringing alcohol on board, but it seems there is alot of risk involved.

What is the "naughty room?" I have read a little bit about this, and from what I gathered, I think its a place where you are called if you are caught?

Well....I guess if they want that extra tip at the end of the cruise they will probably keep their mouth shut. ;)

It's really amazing to me what ends people will go to, and the amount of planning they go to, to rip off NCL from a legitimate revenue stream.

Hmm...hardly any planning goes into slipping a box of wine into a carry on bag......takes all of 1 minute.

As for doing so being a rip off to the cruise line.......hardly, my tab for all our cocktails on board aside from a little box of wine I may or may not bring along more than makes up for it. Besides........I would never get room service for a glass of wine in my room....so they are not losing anything frankly. If anything.

Go ahead and pack your boxed wine. We are only bringing carryons for our next cruise so we will have to sacrifice the wine for clothing. Maybe I can think of something creative to carryon. My TA orders me bottled wine at $15 per bottle on RCCL cruises, but NCL doesn't offer that option. If I had to pay the $25 corkage fee, I'd make sure I was bringing a very high quality wine.

.

The corkage fee is $15--and some people like to bring the cheapest wine or champagne, so they feel like the cost is less than the wine they can purchase onboard.

I took the approach you suggested, and brought 4 of my favorites from my wine cellar.....

I think it was worth it--even with the $15 corkage fee per bottle, it was exceptional wine, and less than if I tried to purchase the same bottle at a restaurant. Plus I had bought the wine a few years ago, so the majority of the cost was paid for long ago.:D

1kycat - jeremy! yes it is jennifer! how are you? we just got off the dawn last week :)

we have brought boxed wine with no issue in the past (like some here said as an extra not instead of). the cabin steward has never said anything, and i'm sure they at least noticed it discarded in the trash when it was empty.

i'll just leave it at that. i know people get into heated debates both ways, so i usually avoid these threads, but thought i'd throw in a few drinkable bozes we found in our "travels" to help anyone out :)

cheers! :D

There are a couple of things to remember on bringing boxed wine in your suitcase. Be sure to get one with a clear bladder. Many are packed in foil bladders and they will be the big standout of the year to the xray machine.

I always fly with it in the box but in the hotel the night before remove the bladder from the box in place it in the suitcase. I fold up the box and also put it in the suitcase. When it get to my room I use a glue stick and put it all back together. It works everytime I have tried it.

Target has a good red wine in a 3 litre and also Black Box is supposed to be good (Sams carries it). They both have clear bladders. Many of the foreign wines have the foil bladders and do not use those.

Hope this helps

Why not get some Rum Runners and fill them with you favorite bottled wine..

Another good idea !!! Just remember if you pack these things in a carry-on that you do not pack it with a questionable item...something that would make them want to see what's inside.

I am hesitant to pack anything in our checked luggage since I believe they look inside of them at random unless it's locked of course. Also...wonder what the chances are that the rough handling of luggage would break these containers. Hmm!

NCL Staff will not open your bags without you being present thus the call to the "naughty room". I too would be concerned with your last comment.

We successfully placed two boxes of wine in checked luggage on an NCL cruise. No problems. Box just fit in the fridge if you arranged it just right.

We went with the target brand. Syrah was good, chardonnay was disappointing. Tried Black Box from BevMo before. yuck.

On our last Mexican cruise one bottle broke in my mother-in-laws luggage. Oops.
