Boxed Wine?

As someone pointed out....I should not let "the one in the bunch" keep me from asking questions so here goes...this could be a hot topic but I am hoping it is not.

Has anyone gotten away with bringing "boxed wine" in with their carry on luggage? I really don't mind paying for my glasses of wine before and after dinner and do not mind paying for all my "fo fo" drinks by the pool....but I hate the thought of paying $25 per bottle of wine just to keep in our room when I can get a whole box to last a week to keep in our room. I wish they would just allow you a few bottles for this purpose like Carnival does.

In any event.... I figure they know all the smuggling tricks so I am expecting to hear that I won't get away with it....but since it's a box and just plastic inside the box...nothing metal, I was thinking that it would go thru the scanners without notice. Am I right, or is that just wishful thinking?

Some folks in the past have reported success wrapping the box as a present. It is extreme to have to do this if you ask me. However, as long as cruise lines treat their guests in contempt compared to land-based hotels, everything is fair game...

....Box o' Wine. Bad memories about Box o' Wine. A friend in college drank most of one on his own at a party....the bushes off of my front porch were never the same....

Sorry - back on topic! - I once smuggled Cuban Cigars back into the US by packing them in with my tampons. I don't know what the box of wine equalivant to tampons would be, but it always helps to try and throw the scanners off. :D

My DD takes one on every cruise. She just removes it from the box, packs it in a 2 gallon Zip lock bag and places it in her checked luggage. She just keeps it in the fridge on board. Succeeded 3 times so far. ;)

Same here --- note checked luggage vs carry on.

This is probably more than we needed to know...:D

And very best way to smuggle wine onboard is:

Pack it in your carryon. You can leave it in the original box.

Arrive early at the pier.

Drink it all before you go through the scanner.

Put the empty box back in your carry on.

Works everytime.

Someone had to say it ---- hopefully you don't mix up the cigars, especially after a few glasses of the boxed wine........

The wine we drink the most is usually Jacobs Creek (Cabernet, Shiraz Reserve or the Shiraz-Cabernet).

We don't have a good choice of boxed wine where I live and someone recommended

"Caballero de Chile".

I think I did drink this wine once or twice (from a bottle) and, from what I remember, it was alright (not great but very drinkable).

Anyone know if Caballero de Chile might be a good choice for a or has a suggestion for a boxed wine widely available?

It's my first cruise with DBF and first cruise with a balcony, I would really like to bring a box of wine for in-cabin consumption, especially since it's a 14-night cruise.

All suggestions are welcome.

The most widely available drinkable wine I have found is the "Black Box" wine. I have seen good reviews for French Rabbit wine too. And really widely available is Target brand. Drinkable, especially in your stateroom while relaxing from your shore excursions. Target wines are available in different size packaging so you can try it pretty cheaply before you sail.

Cheers!

Go ahead and pack your boxed wine. We are only bringing carryons for our next cruise so we will have to sacrifice the wine for clothing. Maybe I can think of something creative to carryon. My TA orders me bottled wine at $15 per bottle on RCCL cruises, but NCL doesn't offer that option. If I had to pay the $25 corkage fee, I'd make sure I was bringing a very high quality wine.

I remember on a past cruise having wine still remaining on the last night of the cruise. DH filled my large wine glass nearly to the top to get rid of the end of the wine. I took my glass of wine down to the atrium to finish a book I was reading before dinner. When DH was coming to meet me, he heard 2 ladies say I wish the bartender would fill my glass like that one. Ha! Ha!

We also enjoy a cocktail on our balcony before dinner. I wish NCL simply allowed each guest to bring 1 bottle of wine onboard like Carnival without a fee. I could see a fee for additional bottles. It is one of those little things that is annoying but it simply makes people use their creative side if they enjoy it. I think it is a challenge to some passengers.

I doubt that NCL would do this...but it took me ten seconds to find your sailing date, ship, and cabin number. We know that NCL reads the board. I wonder if they would ever start flagging people's luggage who post that they are smuggling? Again doubtful...but just a thought....

Good Luck

BTW...NCL lurker...I will not be smuggling.;):)

Hmm...let's see now, about how much money do you think they'd have to pay someone to come here daily and be on the look out for someone who might be talking about bringing boxed wine on board? Can't imagine it's worth that much to them to find a few smugglers this way. That said, if I had not asked a question about my cabin number you would have never known which cabin I will be in .....therefore they not only have to spend time watching for someone talking about it....but hope they also talk about their cabin number.....which BTW we are going to be changing due to that over hang that I am not real happy about. So what do ya think? Worth their time and effort or not? ;)

I understand why you’re defensive…but, I’m not attacking you. I was just raising a thought. If you think that it’s impossible…that's OK with me.

But would it be worth their time and effort? IMO, it would be. Along with the casino, alcohol sales is one of their top revenue streams. They depend upon it to make the cruise profitable. If they flagged your luggage (along with others), you would come back here and report it. Would that stop it? No. But would it stop many from doing it? Yes. And I’m guessing that it would take 20 min a day…if they knew their way around the board. So again, I doubt they do it. But I can guarantee that they are interested in threads like this.
