cdncruiser Posted March 11, 2007 #1 Share Posted March 11, 2007 We are sailing on the Norwegian Dawn out of NYC in September. I reserved 2 nights at the RadioCityApartments which is right next to Times Square. My DH would truly love to have an authentic New York Deli sandwich. Any suggestions as to "the place to go" would be much appreciated. Thanks Laurey

The second avenue deli was the place to go but unfortunately it is closed. http://www.stagedeli.com/indexmain.cfm

willysgrandma Posted March 12, 2007 #4 Share Posted March 12, 2007 The Stage is probably the best known. Juniors just opened a restaurant between 44th and 45th. ANd there is Lindy's - it's on 7th Ave and 53rd St.
NEW 2 CRUISIN Posted March 12, 2007 #5 Share Posted March 12, 2007 The Carnegie Deli is just a nice little walk away over on 7th Ave between 54th and 55th! Of course, you'll have to get either corned beef or pastrami (or a combination of BOTH!) wherever you decide to eat! YUM! :)

smeyer418 Posted March 12, 2007 #8 Share Posted March 12, 2007 I think the food at Junior's is terrible. The cheesecake is ok.
new2cruise1 Posted March 12, 2007 #9 Share Posted March 12, 2007 Love the Carnegie deli - although you are at long tables and sit with other patrons. Talk about a large sandwich - that you will never see anywhere else. Recommend going there. Judy

TravelAbby Posted March 12, 2007 #11 Share Posted March 12, 2007 We have lived in Manhattan of over 35 years and have found the Carnegie to be the best in the city. If you are not big eaters, consider sharing a sandwich.
johnql Posted March 12, 2007 #12 Share Posted March 12, 2007 Here's another vote for the Carnegie Deli. I would pass on Junior's. I agree with smeyer418 - their cheesecake is ok but their food isn't very good and they are way overpriced.

tony@stanton19.freeserve. Posted March 12, 2007 #14 Share Posted March 12, 2007 How about Roxy's, we were really impressed with the speed of service wheen we were going to a show. It could well be a tourist place, but it worked for us:)

If you are not big eaters, consider sharing a sandwich. Hi TravelAbby, When's the best time to eat at the Carnegie w/out the big crowds? We like a late lunch (early dinner) as we are both teachers. Do they have special hours, or are they open lunch through dinner? Thanks! We will check it out this May. Kel:)
willysgrandma Posted March 13, 2007 #16 Share Posted March 13, 2007 Here is the website for the Carnegie Deli: http://www.carnegiedeli.com/ Late lunch might be a good time when it isn't too crowded. You need to watch theater times and whether there are matinees or not. Restaurants near there are usually busy from 1 - 2:30 when there are 3:00 matinees and then 5:00 - 7:00 or 7:30 for evening shows.
madelinerose Posted March 14, 2007 #17 Share Posted March 14, 2007 Take a gander at the corned beef sandwich. I believe they charge you an extra $5 or so to split one, but it's one of those "gotta try it once" NY kinda things.....like NYE in Times Square. ;) http://www.nyctourist.com/sounds/carnegie/carndeli_3.htm
NEW 2 CRUISIN Posted March 14, 2007 #18 Share Posted March 14, 2007 Yeah....the prices are out of control, but ya gotta try it at least once! Be sure to take lots of pictures of your food to show your friends back home who would never believe you if you tried to tell them about it! HAHA! :)
F19810 Posted March 15, 2007 #19 Share Posted March 15, 2007 Whenever I am in NYC, I have to get a corned beef and pastrami sandwich from either the Carnegie or the Stage Deli. People are serious about sharing a sandwich. Last time, I got a sandwich to go and when I got home I weighed it . There was over a pound of meat in it. Alot of people like a corned beef special- corned beef, russian dressing and coleslaw. If you split a sandwich and somehow still have room, you can always get dessert. Enjoy,Judy ps, eat a sandwich for me!

signman Posted March 15, 2007 #22 Share Posted March 15, 2007 2nd Avenue Deli closed because the landlord wanted a huge increase in rent. If you are limiting yourself to the Times Square area, then the only 2 places you should consider are the Stage and Carnegie. Personally my favorite is Katz's at Houston and Ludlow on the Lower East Side.
BunkerVA Posted March 16, 2007 #23 Share Posted March 16, 2007 Katz's deli is THE BEST! (I'll have what she's having!) Fabulous sandwiches and yummy sweets! Lots of fun! It's in SoHo and we took the train to TS, but it's worth it! Have fun! Sam :D
