knittinggirl Posted October 9, 2012 #1 Share Posted October 9, 2012 Anybody done both of these? The White Pass Scenic Railway and the All Aboard Steam Train. Which do you prefer?
Budget Queen Posted October 9, 2012 #2 Share Posted October 9, 2012 It used to be they ran all these train trips with steam, from the dock to the rail yard. Was a treat for those rail fans. :) I was fortunate to be have taken two of those trains with the short steam engine ride. Would be a big plus for me to consider again. Is this of interest to you? bonvoyagie Posted October 9, 2012 #3 Share Posted October 9, 2012 For the most part the railroad runs some very unique diesel locomotives - they also have a couple of restored steam locos that they use for some weekend excursion service as well as for the few times they bust out the rotary snowplow to clear the line in spring. The scenery is the same as they only have one set of tracks to run on. The difference is steam vs diesel locomotives. If you are a train fan (like me) the answer is STEAM. My cruise ship visited on Wed when all they run are diesels.:(
c-legs Posted October 10, 2012 #4 Share Posted October 10, 2012 STEAM, hands down !!! ( in my opinion) It's phenomenal. Besides, it goes further than the diesel trains. beyond the border, about 4 miles, close to the ''proper'' highway border station;uses a loop track to turn around and takes water from a creek before going back down. It's awesome and takes you right back to the pioneers' days. Cheers
Krazy Kruizers Posted October 10, 2012 #5 Share Posted October 10, 2012 We have done both. Steam train wins for us -- brings back memories of riding on one back in the very early 40's -- a couple were still around.
Rare Keith1010 Posted October 11, 2012 #6 Share Posted October 11, 2012 I also would recommend the steam train. Keith
travelingla Posted October 11, 2012 #7 Share Posted October 11, 2012 Ok -- crazy question -- where do you even see a steam train offered? Is this part of the White Pass RR as well? We will be on Holland America and I did not see an 'either / or' type train offered??? Thanks -
bonvoyagie Posted October 11, 2012 #8 Share Posted October 11, 2012 The steam excursion runs on Fridays and Mondays only. It does a roundtrip from Skagway to Fraser and back. So if you were there on any other day of the week it would not be offered.
