Now for the question! I had looked into the roof top walk and we decided against it. However, when I was reading reviews, someone mentioned a building with an inexpensive elevator to an awesome observation view of Stockhom. Naturally, I can't find the information now :( Is this something that you know about?

I think the building/elevator you are referring to is Katarinahissen with it's viewing deck.

The elevator itself is closed until 2019 but I think the viewing deck might be open although I've read that it is supposed to

undergo renovations during 2014 so there is a risk that it might be closed when you're ship is in.

Hi, greetings from a fellow 'local' contributor now about to be a cruiser. Have read all your advice and made a plan but still have a few questions.

We dock in Frihammen on 15th May from 7:30 to 16:30. Far too short but that's the way it goes. As I intend to do a land trip to Stockholm in 2015 with my daughter who is not interested in ships, I have planned the following just to get an over view of Gamla Stan and spend most of my time at the Vasa Museum.

Ship docks Frihammen - 7:30 to 16:30

Buy 24hr pass - 70SEK senior.

76 bus to Gamla Stan.

Every 10 mins. approx 20mins ride.

See - Royal Palace, Cathedral, Market Place.

Walk through to Slussen.

Ferry - Slussen to Almänna Gränd

Every 15 mins.

Walk to Vasa

Tram from Vasa Museet to Djurgadsbron

76 bus from Djurgadsbron to Frihammen

Questions:-

Does the ferry stop at the Vasa landing stage as it appears to do on the map or only at Almänna Gränd ?

Can I walk along the waterfront?

Are the trams quite frequent ? (I am having trouble figuring out the timetables)

Are the tram and bus stops in the same place at Djurgadsbron ?

Approx. how much time would you allow to get back to the ship from the Vasa Museum ?

I would suggest that you skip the tram from Vasa/Nordiska museet and walk to the bus stop at Djurgårdsbron

since it is more or less the same distance to walk to the tram stop as to the Djurgårdsbron stop

SL journey planner says that the trip will take around 10 minutes so add another 5-10 minutes to be on the safe side.

The bus frequency is one bus every 10 minutes until at 15.54 when the frequency changes to one bus very 6-7 minutes.

The destination on the bus front display says Frihamnen which is the bus' end stop.

The only problem for you is that hardly anything is open before 10.00

so you'll have two hours before you can enter the Palace.

Perhaps you could make your way to The café called Vetekatten?

To get from the airport to the hotel I would recommend either Airport train or airport coaches.

The train is called Arlanda Express and the coaches are called flygbussarna.

The Hotel is very close to where both of these transports arrive in Stockholm.

From hotel to pier depends on where your ship dock.

Stockholm HoHo buses generally have a poor reputation and I have experience from them myself.

Very expensive, poor guiding (pre recorded audio) and etc.

As for transport within the city. Stockholm have a very extensive public transport so use that to get around.

As for what to do, the only real musts are Vasa and the Old town. Possible also the Royal Palace.

The rest depends on your interests.

Since you have almost three full days I would reocmmend you to acquire the Stockholm card.

Thanks very much for the info. I had realised that I would be early for places to be open and, as I can visit inside next year, had planned just to walk through Gamla Stan and take photos before boarding the ferry. I may return from Vasa the same way depending on how long I spend there.

Your arrival date is not available for search yet but searching for May 11th indicates that you have several bus routes to choose from.

Unfortunately this means you still have to walk from the ship to Slussen which is almost 1km (about 0.6).

I have been looking at the bus map and wondering if I can stay on Bus 76 past Gamla Stan take it to the end of the loop and stay on and end up at the Palace or another stop to tour Gamla Stan. Would I get great views from the bus if I do the whole loop? We would like to take the earliest bus from the Cruise terminal, do you know what time the bus start in the morning. Our port time is 7:30-4:30 on Thursday May 15/2014.

The fastest way (excluding taxi) is probably to take tram (7) to Nybroplan and walk (uphill) the last 400 meters to Östermalms Torg.

The cheapest way is of course to walk all the way (0.9 miles). :D

A more complex option is to take bus 44 to Karlaplan and then the subway to Östermalms Torg (be sure to take the correct exit or you'll end up at the bottom of the hill instead)

It depends where your ship docks, from Frihamnen there is a boat shuttle that sometimes (but very rarely) stops at Allmänna Gränd on Djurgården island (close to Vasa).

So from Frihamnen bus is basically the only option.

From Stadsgårdskajen there is usually HoHo boats that goes directly to Vasa in the morning when a cruise ship arrive at Stadsgårdskajen berth.

From Skeppsbron there is Djurgårdsfärjan that goes to Allmänna Gränd (scroll back a few pages to find info about it).

I also agree with Thule about taking the tram to Nybroplan and walk from there.

Do it yourself:

Priority 1 is Vasa museum, priority 2 is Gamla stan. If you have some time to spare goto Storkyrkan or Riddarholmskyrkan.

As for Skansen you probably won't have time for it as it requires at least 2-3 hours to go though it even if you "rush" through it.

As for transport options it depends on where you arrive in Stockholm,

a ship-shuttle will probably drop you off at Gustav Adolfs torg.

From there walk to Karl XII:s torg/Kungsträdgårdsgatan and go with bus #76 towards Ropsten, get off at Djurgårdsbron and walk from there to Vasa.

It depends on where in Gamla stan you want to go from, from the Northern end walking to Gustav Adolfs torg/centralen would be the most convenient.

The fastest way (excluding taxi) is probably to take tram (7) to Nybroplan and walk (uphill) the last 400 meters to Östermalms Torg.

 

The cheapest way is of course to walk all the way (0.9 miles). :D

 

A more complex option is to take bus 44 to Karlaplan and then the subway to Östermalms Torg (be sure to take the correct exit or you'll end up at the bottom of the hill instead)

 

Another option is to go with Ressel Rederi's M/S Emelie (ferry) from Allmänna Gränd to Nybroviken (Nybroplan) and walk from there.

However this ferry only goes once an hour. Price is 50SEK and they do not accept cash, card payment only.

Any guess where the tender will drop us from the Strommen Buoy? Seems closer to Stadsgarden than Slussen which I assumed would be the drop off point.

You will be dropped off at Räntmästartrappen/Stockholm Slussen kajen (google map link).

You mentioned back a few threads about this boat service being new. Is it currently in service? I have looked on their website and I could by tickets in advance, but I am reluctant to do that without much knowledge of their service.

Any advice about purchasing tickets before arriving on a cruise ship. It would be nice not to have to wait in lines to get tickets. It also would be nice not to wait in line for tickets for the Vasa Museum and Skansen as well. Do you know how we could accomplish that?
