Do you need advice about Stockholm?

Thank you again! I don't really need to visit other cities and if Stockholm is as good or better than the other areas, I'll keep it simple. I had heard things about Northern Sweden being great for scenery and wildlife, so I thought perhaps an overnight train there and back the next night would be worthwhile. However, another thing to consider is that my 4 year-old daughter will be with us and we may just need to stay in the same hotel where she can have a place for naps, etc.

The archipelago cruise looks fantastic! Perhaps this will give us the scenario we are looking for without the hassle of extra travel. Another option could be on the way out, if we could take the train to either Copenhagen or perhaps Oslo, we could get our return flight out of there. Neither of those cities will be visited on our cruise.

Höga Kusten is said to be very wonderful. You can get there by airplane, train or bus.

Flights are from Arlanda Aiport to Örnsköldsvik airport. It will take about 3 hours from Arlanda to central Örnsköldsvik.

Bus is required as transport from the airport to the city.

http://www.hogakustenflyg.se/showIndexPage.do

Trains are around 5½-6½hours.

http://www.sj.se/?l=en

Bus is closer to 7½-8 hours.

https://portal.ybuss.se/boka/index.asp?id=0&language=2

It also depends on if you want to do it before or after the cruise.

If you do it before you could fly directly to Örnsköldsvik via Arlanda rather then going into town and then back to the airport later.

http://www.hogakusten.com/information/in-english.html

Dalarna province is also quite nice, especially the area around Idre Fjäll and Grövelsjön but is quite far away and requires lengthy travelling with multiple changes along the way.

More centrally located in Dalarna is Leksand with Tällberg and a few other towns around Lake Siljan.

http://www.siljan.se/en/

Leksand is a reasonable 2.45-3 hours by train (no changes required) you can catch the train at either Stockholm central station or at Arlanda Airport Central Station.

Trains: http://www.sj.se/?l=en

No need to visit Oslo or Copenhagen. ;)

Hello! Why not just take the bus to Waxholm from Stockholm and walk around there for a few hours. And to Norrtalje?! Good (and they go very often) regular bus-service from Stockholm city. And it doesn`t cost extra money. (Within the SL-services.) Check out prices and timetables at http://www.sl.se. you can choose info in english.

Or go to the old town of Sigtuna for the day. Also within the regular SL-service. /Chris58

Imo Norrtälje isn't that special, Sigtuna is nice but small.

it totally depends on what you want to see.

Höga Kusten as I mentioned before is a very unique type of nature where the land have risen many hundred meters in 10'000 years.

Doeo anyone know where the Eruodam normally docks? We plan to walk to the old town if we dock at Stadsgarden. The Eurodam will be docking overnight. I'm not sure if they will put us at a port further out because of that.

When will it arrive?

It is not listed in the port website's ship list.

It will arrive next year on 29 May. I know it is early but am trying to figure out where the Eurodam normally docks if that is possible. It looks like there will be one other large cruise ship in Stockholm that day. The Eurodam is staying the night if that makes a difference.

Iv'e checked this years Itineraryand the docking location varies from time to time.

I've only checked May and early June for this year and several ships* stayed over night but docking location varied from time to time.

*AidaBella, Ryndam, Rotterdam, Azmara Quest, marina, Columbus 2

So its not possible to draw any conclusions at all.

I have a question about our arrival in Stockholm. We are traveling on a Royal Caribbean ship - the Legend of the Seas, which arrives back in port after a 7 day cruise on July 27, 2014 at 7am. What would be a safe time to book our departure from Stockholm Airport (Arlanda). I can book a flight at noon and wonder if that would be too early. Thank you.

Most cruise lines have passengers disembark by 9A at latest. Pending your intentions to get from Port to Airport u should be able to make a 12N flight. We were just there, flew into Stockholm pre cruise. We took Arlanda Express direct train from Airport to Stockholm City Center, approx. 20 min ride.

From Port, you have option of Taxi direct to Airport or Taxi to City Center and then take Arlanda Express non stop to airport. Be careful with Taxi drivers, use only Authorized Stockholm Taxi Drivers. I cannot remember the name of the approved Stockholm Taxis but I am sure there is a thread somewhere here on CC about Stockholm Taxis.

I could book a 10.30am flight from Arlanda, cruise docks at 7am.

If I'm off ship by 8am and go direct to airport can I arrive there by 9.30am to check in?

Ships is Legend of the Seas, dont know which port yet, and it arrives in Stockholm on a Sunday if that makes it easier time wise.

Theoretically it is possible but it sounds like a little too tight time wisethere is more or less zero margin for anything unexpected that might cause delays.

I agree, cutting it too close. If your flight was at 12Noon, there should be no problem but 10:30A sounds too early for my style of traveling. They typically recommend you be at airport 2 hrs. prior to Flight departure for International flights so booking a flight at 10:30A and planning to make it to airport for 9:30A sounds a bit risky. No time allotted for unexpected delays.

We came back from Baltic cruise two weeks ago. Our ship arrived in Stockholm day before and we stayed overnight (docked at Frihamnen) so we could leave the ship at any time which is slightly different than your situation. For what it's worth, we had 10:30 am flight on SAS direct to Newark which we didn't want to give up. We scheduled a taxi for 7:30 and we left a bit late due to a mix up with taxi driver as where ship was docked on Frihmanen. It was a Friday so fair amount of traffic. The SAS checkin at the airport was very crowded. You had to get boarding pass at kiosk and then get on long line to check luggage. In contrast to US, the security line was a breeze. We made the flight without feeling rushed or pressured.

I will be in Sweden next spring and am trying to find the town my ancestors came from. The documents say they are Swedish, parents born in Sweden but their place of last residence was Christiana. Where would you guess they lived? Isn't Christiana in Copenhagen? The time period would be the 1890's.

At the end of the 19th century Norway was in a union with Sweden, and Oslo was called Kristiania (previously spelled Christiania).

I hope you don't mind me jumping in and asking some questions. We will be coming into Stockholm in July 2014 on the Norwegian Star. Our ship is in port from 7am until 4pm which doesn't give us a lot of time. The things we wanted to see are: the Old town (Gamla Stan), Skansen Folk Park, Ice Bar, and the Cathedral. We also wanted to fit in a ride on the Hop On Hop Off boats or some boat somewhere.

We thought we would go to Gamla Stan from 7am until 9:30am and see some of the sights. Then take the ferry or boat to Skansen. We are unsure where to go to get the ferry, which ferry to take, and how to get to Skansen from the ferry. We would spend 2-3 hours and then go to the Ice Bar and the Cathedral and shop a bit in Gamla Stan before going back to the ship. I am unsure exactly where the Ice Bar is and where the Cathedral is in reference to Gamla Stan and the boat. Any information that you would give us in how to coordinate these sights would be helpful. Thank you. I wish we had time to go to Vauxhall (unsure of spelling), but it looks like that would be stretching it.

The Cathedral with which I assume you mean Storkyrkan, is located Gamla Stan which is good.

Also have in mind that there won't be much open before 9am,

I also think that your schedule seems a bit optimistic.

Skansen is quite large and if you want have any value for the money and

avoid feeling like you have to rush through it without exploring it properly.

I was there this summer and I spent about 5 hours there and still didn't

see everything.

As for sightseeing tours, Strömma have several different tours.

The ferries to/from Djurgården leaves from the south Easterna tip of Gamla Stan:

Second link will need the new version of Google maps to work.

When you arrive at Djurgården there is a short walk from the ferries to Skansen:

With Vauxhull (which is located in London and not Stockholm ;) ) I assume that you mean Vaxholm?

If so, is it Vaxholm town that you are interested in or the fortress?

Getting to Vaxholm town will take over 1 hour from central Stockholm.

The fortress does not open until 11am.

Currently its uncertain if there will be boat connection to Vaxholm.

It has been so in the past but with the new procurement there is a big

risk that the new operators will prioritize profit before functionality.

It has been rumoured that there will be much fewer passenger boats lines

from central Stockholm then it has been before.

To summarize it, you won't be able to do all the things you want to do

so you have to select some of it.

Thank you so much for your helpful information. I appreciate that you take the time to try to help me. I can see so many things that I would like to see in Stockholm, but unfortunately they only give us a limited amount of time.

I have a rough idea of a plan and have a couple of questions. Our boat docks at Frihimnen, berth 634. I know that we can walk down the pier and take bus #76 to Gamla Stan. I know we can take a taxi as well. I have learned on these forums that taxis wait in the parking lot outside the Viking Line Terminal. But where is that is relation to Frihimnen? Is it easy to find? If a bus is convenient when we get off, then we can take a bus, but if not I will go for the taxi. Where should I tell the taxi to drop us off? By the cathedral?

We will stroll through Gamla Stan, taking our pictures to arrive at the boat dock for Djurgarden. I am not sure where we walk to get that boat ( I know southeastern tip) , but I think it is Slussen or else near the Grand Hotel. Is there a certain name of the boat? My husband is going to go to the Vassa Museum and I will go to Skansen. I think the boat goes to both stops. I am going to go to Skansen for 2-3 hours, then walk to the Vassa Museum to meet up with my husband. I know it is not ideal, but I will pick the things that interest me the most. Seeing some of it is better than none of it. Is it easy to find the direction in which to walk from Skansen to Vassa?

From here, we are going to take a taxi to the ice bar. I think taxis leave from Stockholm's leisure park which is 200 meters to the right when you go back to the main road outside of Vassa. Is this hard to find? I am not sure how long is 200 meters. Is it about a 20 minute taxi ride from there?

Then we will see the Ice Bar. I think it is near a train station, but I am not sure how to get from there back to Gamla Stan. Can you help me with that?

The remaining time we will shop, go in the Storkyrkan cathedral, & take one of the boat rides at Gamla Stan that you sent me. I see there is a royal canal tour for 50 minutes. I printed their schedule. From Gamla Stan, I am not sure how to get back to the boat in Frihimnen. Do one of these boats go near there? Is there a company that will bring us closer to the cruise ship in Frihimnen? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

angeleyes27,

I think you mean TallinkSilja terminal and not Viking Line terminal as the latter is at Stadsgården and not Värtahamnen/Frihamnen.

Also you dont have to go from Värtahamnen to Frihamnen to get on the bus.

The bus stops at Värtahamnen as well. The stop is called Hangövägen and is just south of where your ship docks:

The boat (ferry) you are looking for is Djurgårdsfärjan.

Its not hard to get from Skansen to Vasa but it requires about 15 min of walking:
