NY Hotel Mela ?

Recommended Posts

OMG - there are so many hotels in NY to choose from (for pre-cruise stay)

We've been to NY before, not really planning on doing much structured "sight-seeing" - want to be within walking distance of a few - but didn't want to be in the middle of the bustle of Times Square.

After much (!) research, I found the Hotel Mela - fairly reasonably priced (for NY) Irish Pub next door (big plus (for dinner) and nice Bistro next door (big plus) for breakfast) ??

Can anyone comment on this hotel ? Are the rooms tiny, tiny ? Is there any kind of a view at all (hard to tell from the wide range of reviews on Trip Advisor)

Thanks !

You don't want to be near Times Square so you picked a hotel a half-block from it? It's fine, and if you're on the front you'll have a nice view of the hotel across the street. All the restaurants in the area are overpriced (especially for breakfast), so I would just book it and relax.

Just did a quick BIS lookout for the Hotel Mela under NYC Dept. of Building's open/public records, looks fine - nothing really unusual, no big red flags & no stop work order or life/fire safety issues. Elevator (16 stories) & annual plumbing reports ok, NYFD & HVAC certificates should be okay likewise - views will be limited with 30 to 40+ stories high-rise all around and those higher floors with views with be priced accordingly, i.e. if there's duplex/penthouse, etc. - it was a formerly 160 units SRO converted to 200+ units hotel and licensed as such.

If the rates look good, book it & know the cancellation clauses - should you find a last time super Hotwire special nearby - it's walking distance to Manhattan pier (but a long one, especially in the warm/hot summer months) or a $10 to $15 dollar taxi ride in A/C comfort - your choice - rollers/spinners or backpack mode.

Everyone's definition for reasonably priced - esp. in NYC - varied as a McD value meal is easily $10 in these tourist area, not-supersized.

No views. We stayed there a year ago, rooms are small but clean and comfortable. Front desk was very helpful. It's on a relatively quiet street, but the only view might be the theater across the street, if you get a north facing room. Otherwise, you're looking at an air duct.
