Five ships in Los Angeles

They will request on return that the driver take the shuttle to pier 91 and return to pick up the rest with luggage.

Oh what a ZOO Miner St will be! You'll have cars driving in ... dropping off passengers embarking for the next cruise for Berths 46 & 54 - then driving to parking lots to be shuttled back to the ship(s) ... passengers disembarking being shuttled to the parking lot ... then driving back to pick up the rest of their party and luggage ...

Oops...you're on the Jewel OTS at 46. :o

I'm thankful that we have not had to board the ship at 46 or 54 because parking at both berths appear to be very limited. I've read that sometimes the cruise ship terminals' parking lot can reach capacity when too many ships have passengers trying to park there. If my memory is correct, they had passengers park at 46 & shuttled to the cruise ship terminals.

I've attached the photo from the berth 54 website showing the Lane Victory & at the top of the photo would be berth 46.

We have disembarked at 46 from Crown Princess and it really wasn't that bad. We cleared immigration onboard, then headed straight off the ship and to the bus that took us back to the main port terminal. This year we're taking a cab.

Getting off the ships should be fine, but I don't envy those boarding. I heard it was a nightmare after our Crown Princess cruise.

hi critterchick, here's hoping our disembarkation at 46 from the Jewel will be smooth in September! Can you tell me, is there much walking required at embarkation (berth 92) to board the ship? My DH is dropping me off, and then parking at 92. And upon our return, about how far is the distance at berth 46 from ship to a cab?

Obviously I'm not 'critterchick' but the Port of LA is my "homeport" & since she has not replied decided to reply to your question.

Berth 92 is newer but smaller than the berth 93 cruise ship terminal which is shown in the Love Boat series. Both berths use the same parking lot (increased to $16/day) & guessing the longest walk may be about 150-200 yards away. It's short enough for us that we roll our bags (usually a full & carryon size for each of us) to the cruise terminal to give to the porters.

If you haven't viewed another thread on this forum with photos of berth 46 then I'll try to locate it. But based on my recollection of those photos the street is very close to berth 46 however I do not know if the cabs may pick up passengers there.

I found those photos of berth 46 on another thread and hopefully you can view them by clicking on this link:

Here I am.:D As Astro Flyer said, it's not that long of a walk to get to 92. And the cabs and shuttle came in to Berth 46 - it's probably a half mile walk to get out to 22nd street from where the ship docked, but all of the transfer vehicles were near the gangway.

They shuttle you to 46. They will request on return that the driver take the shuttle to pier 91 and return to pickup the rest with luggage.

The email we got from Princess said that, but when we disembarked, they took everybody, luggage and all, back to Berth 93. The shuttles were full sized tour busses, so the drivers stowed the larger bags in the hold and unloaded them upon arrival.

We are coming in on the Jewel of the Seas to 92 and are looking to rent a car since we are flying out the next day. I had read there are rental car booths at the terminal but is it only Enterprise? Is my best bet just to take Primetime to LAX and rent from there since that is where we would be returning to the next day?

Last night I received a short-notice email for "west coast" passengers & was interested in one of the offers. It's the Crown's 7-day CA Coastal from LA on October 3rd. There are many inside cabins available & being close to final payment we decided to wait to see if there will be further price reductions for new bookings. Then it dawned on me it's the 4 ships in the Port of LA date & that's something to consider although the Crown is "scheduled" at the usual berth 93.

It's an hour drive from home but the parking lot will be crowded with cars from two ships that previously sailed plus cars for the passengers sailing on 4 cruise ships on 10/3. If we decide to book the Crown we'll have to consider taking a shuttle because of the possibility of the parking lot being full.

When checking the Port of LA website it sends me to another website for cruise ship schedules & berth assignments.

https://www.portsamerica.com/cruise/los-angeles-terminal.html

The schedule shows the Jewel OTS sailing from berth 92 but returning to the alternative berth 46 which is located further south of the primary cruise ship terminals of 92 & 93. You could check with your cruise line however I'd put more credibility in the port's schedule.

I drive to the port but recall reading that Enterprise will pick up passengers from cruise ships but their hours are limited & may be more expensive. I just checked the price for Prime Time Shuttle which shows $32 for two passengers from the cruise terminal to LAX.

We are on the Jewel, Vancouver to LA, coming in on Sept 26th to berth 92. We aren't on the roundtrip sailing that others are talking about.

I was just verifying about rental cars as someone claimed there are "booths" in the terminal. We will just shuttle to LAX and rent from there as we have multiple options for a free rental.

Thanks for the clarification & we've enjoyed a cruise from LA to Vancouver and hopefully you'll also have a great cruise sailing the opposite direction.

I've never noticed any rental car booths at 93 however it's been decades since we've used 92 so I don't have any knowledge about rental car booths.

Thanks.:) We will just take a shuttle or taxi to LAX and grab a car there. Enterprise wasn't one we have a free day on anyway. My DH travels a lot for work, so we will see which points we need to use before they expire. He has to use specific companies and every year or so they renegotiate, so not sure if he is using Avis or Hertz these days.

On the Port of LA information that Princess provides on their website they say a cab ride from the port to LAX cost $35-$40 although I have no personal experience.

Last Saturday I happened to be on a flight from LAX to Houston and flew over the San Pedro area. I recalled this thread instantly when I saw 4 ships in the harbor.

Sorry for the terrible image quality (zoom on iPhone), but thought I'd share! I think there's a gray cloud right over the USS Iowa otherwise I would have pointed it out.

We were disembarking RCI's Jewel at pier 46.

What a nightmare !!!!

The port authority had know for over a year that 4 ships would be in and they were totally unprepared for it.

Our captain made good time and we arrived early, ahead of NCL's Jewel and just before a PCL ship. From our balcony, I could hear our ships officer saying that 'The port guy has not shown up."

That delayed us 45 minutes.

Then we could see from our balcony, that the gangway would not connect to our ship. That delayed us another hour.

Immigration was done onboard, but US and Canadian citizens had to use the same line as other countries.

There were only 3 immigration officers to do this and we had more than 2, 200 passengers.

After finally getting off the ship, we had to go to the tents, grab our luggage and wait in the long line in the sun to put our luggage on a bus which would take us back to pier 92 where we parked.

Usually, we are home in San Diego by 11:30AM. This time we got home at 3:45PM. Never again will we book a cruise if there are more than 2 ships in port. If we have one booked, we decided we will cancel it.

Well, there is my rant. :) Just sayin".

Sorry to learn about the problems & agree that that they had plenty of time to be prepared. :(

Looking at the Marine Traffic website the Princess ships swapped berths based on the port's schedule. The Crown was at 54 (probably worse being described as a food freight berth) and the Ruby at the normal berth 93 used in the Love Boat series. We board the Crown tomorrow & hope she'll be as scheduled at 93 but with only 2 ships tomorrow no one should need to use 46 or 54.

We were on the same cruise and heard that story quite a few times. We were lucky that we were escorted off in the first group, but even that was delayed by an hour or so (some day DH will thank me for rousting him out of bed at the crack of dawn). I did hear that part of the issue was with the longshoremen messing with disembarking passengers - moving heavy equipment and not letting people leave the gangway on the pier, then shutting down work altogether - so I blame the Port of LA for that CF. If the port is serious about having more ships here, they need to step up their game.

I totally agree. We were in group 29 out of 33, so we were in the last group.
