Miami airport question

My group won't be flying out until late in evening so there will be time to kill before we can check in. Are there places to sit and eat in the airport before security? Or any other suggestions would be welcome.

Yes there are a few places to eat before security but not much. There are plenty of areas to sit as well. Depending on what airline you are flying after security has tons of more options for food, sitting down, and shopping, so check-in as soon as you can.

maybe do a tour before heading to the airport

or get a day room at a hotel so you can enjoy the pool & relax in comfort

You will be off the ship by 10 am at the latest & depending on your flight time it could be a long wait at the airport

If you have a long time to kill you can pay to store your bags at MIA and then use the Miami Airport Flyer bus to get to/from South Beach for about $3 per person each way. Sight see, boozy lunch, people watch, etc.

Sometimes an airline will put you on an earlier flight if your booked flight is overbooked. Of course that could split up your group. Just a thought.
