Nassau Questions!!

Hey Everyone,

So my husband are going on a Cruise end of October 2015.

This is one our stops. Currently I dont have a tour planned.

My husband is not a fan of water parks so I decided we should pass

on Atlantis, considering its high priced and he probably wouldnt love it.

So I was planning on us just going to Junkanoo beach and relaxing.

Then later hit the Straw Market. My questions are is it safe to walk to both of those? Also is there anything else around those two locations we should see or do? Considering we probably will only lay out at the beach for a couple hours.

I heard something about a Pirate Museum, my husband loves pirate stuff and so do I. So does anyone know the name of that Pirate Museum? Is it close to these locations?

Any response will be helpful, thanks in advance. (:

The Straw Market and the Pirates Museum (that is the name) are very close to each other and it is very safe to walk to either. I haven't been to the Pirate's Museum but here is their web page http://www.pirates-of-nassau.com/museum.htm. The people who have gone, all liked it very much. As for the Straw market, unless you want imitation stuff, all made in China and be hassled at every booth, I would eliminate it from your schedule. Just my opinion, but it is truly a huge tourist trap and not one home made item there.

Cheers

We just returned from a cruise that had a port stop in Nassau, our third time there. It's not high on my list of favorite ports, but we had a better time this time than any other, because we decided to do our own walking tour of the downtown historic area, and also to have lunch at a great place we'd been to previously.

We got the walking tour info from the thread linked below; it's a long-running thread and the info for the tour is linked on the second page (and also at the second link below); the map is at the third link below

All of this is very close to the cruise docks, as you can see from the map. The Pirate Museum is close by as well (we'd probably have visited if we'd had a bit more time).

If you want some true Bahamian food for lunch, I highly recommend a place called Bahamian Cookin'. It's also in this same area, very close to the docks, at Trinity Place off Market Street. Don't miss the conch fritters, macaroni and cheese, and the fruit punch. This is all the real deal.

I have never been a fan of the Straw Market, I don't understand the allure. But if you are walking around this general area, you can certainly walk through it on your way back to the ship, and decide for yourself. (It's marked on the map linked above.)

Have a great trip!

I concur with the Straw Market thought. I have been to Nassau more times than I can count. I cannot stand the hassle of the SM. Sen. Frogs is a fun fun fun place, if you don't mind a crowd and a LOT of noise and partying. I really enjoy it. I have always gone to Atlantis. I know you said your Dh is not a fan of waterparks but Atlantis is so much more. I know it is a little pricey, but I think you get what you pay for. JMO! We like The Dig ( nice aquatic area and aquariums), the casino ( mostly for the beautiful Chihuly hanging from the ceiling), the lagoon, and I especially like laying by one of the pools for the duration of the excursion. And also proximity to the bars. I admit, I like riding the tubes thru the not so lazy river! But we do that only once , then it's time for lunch and laying out. This time, we ARE skipping Atlantis ( been several times and just going to skip this trip) but I think it I were going for the first time, that is what I would want to see. Everyone is different, but that is my nickel of advice.

I hope you have a great cruise.

All places you indicate are fairly close together. Since these are all on main streets and abound with tourists from the ship, they are safe to walk to especially during daylight. Just beyond junkaroo beach is the fish fry ( a group of most bahama restaurants )

We like the beach experience at Cable Beach in Nassau. There are quite a few resorts which have day passes. We avoid the Straw Market for reasons mentioned and enjoy excursions away from the pier. Just our experience preference.

Have been to the Pirate's Museum. Fairly good and it's across from the British Colonial Hilton which is another good place for a day pass.

Been to Nassau only twice but our last visit there we went to Cable beach and spent the day. Did this free on our own did not pay for the resorts day pass. We took the #10 bus from town out to Melia Resort and walked through the parking lot in the residential area to the left of Melia. There was another resort there that had a restaurant that was open to the public and while we didn't go there some others on the beach went and told us the prices were good. There are vendors there with wave runners for rent as well to the public not just the resort folks.
