Cruising after a stroke

Travelling solo I had a stroke on QM2, had to spend 6 days in Belgium Hospital, and make a claim on Ins for Medi vac home.

I am recovering, still some loss of use on left side but I can and do manage to live alone

would like to cruise again, possibly with my 64 yr. old daughter,

Has anyone found restrictions from Travel Ins, pre existing condition or from cruise line in fear of a second stroke?.

Would want to stay coastal USA, as 6 days in "out of date , broken equipment hospital is an experience NOT TO BE REPEATED.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Thaank you

Re: Travel Insurance

Re: Cruise line Restrictions

  • Most cruise lines have a "Fit to Travel" policy. The policy generally states that they do not require that a guest travel with another person as a condition for their ships. However, ship personnel are not required to perform personal tasks (e.g. assisting with eating, dressing, toileting or lifting and therefore, guest requiring assistance with these functions should consider these needs when making a booking.)
  • With that said there have been postings stating that due to having a history of on-board medical needs with a specific cruise line that they have been banned from that line. Whether or not you are at risk depends much on what your previous on-board medical history is and what specifically those services were in the past which might place you at risk for possibly being banned.

Thank you for your helpful reply,

I do not need any service, it is a daily struggle but I do live alone.

The one problem I have is not being able to drive now, only right side is usable , and have problem with perception of distance. Neither should be a problem on the ship as such ( still waiting for Ins to pay claim, but would chose another company if I ever cruised again.)

Before booking your cruise, make sure you can even get insurance. Since you filed a claim because of a stroke, it could be listed in a general database and you could be listed as uninsurable. This might not happen, but it's better to know beforehand.

Thank you for your reply Kitty 9, I do not get on line as often as I used to do. Difficult to type with only my right hand usable, I "hunt and peck" but working on making my whole left side workable -maybe in next few months.

Your reply listed a problem I had thought might exist. I had never had to use the Medical Ins before. I know I could not risk a Transatlantic cruise (or B2B on Cunard), though I do hope that by end of 2015 I could risk a cruise up the East coast of USA within reach of excellent medical aid should I be so unfortunate as to need it.

Have a very good future.

Jimsgirl, yes, I remember Crystal cruises.

I hope your brain can recycle itself and you get strength back in your hand/arm. My dad had a stroke in late October of 2013. It affected his vision where both his eyes moved towards the bridge of his nose. Everything he saw was slanted at a 90 degree angle. He spent 6 days in a neuro unit and then went to a neurological opthomologist. One thing we've learned is that the brain is an amazing organ. While it can't repair the damage from the stroke, it somehow can reroute the circuits and retrain different parts of the brain. His eyes eventually went back to its normal location and his vision is good.

I hope similar things happen to you.

Yes, my post-polio has gotten to the point of needing a scooter full time. I was falling far too often, and breaking bones in my feet, legs and wrists. It was either use the scooter or keep breaking bones.

Sorry about the confusion on the previous post. I'm in Texas visiting family and used her computer to type the previous message. I didn't change her user name to mine. Idiot!!!!

PS why is gas so much cheaper here? We're still at $2.79 in Pa and they're are under two bucks outside Dallas.

Hi Jimsgirl,

You've had quite a rough time, and we are glad you are recovering and considering more travel.

Yes, at least you can leave the "driving" to the Captain ;)

In terms of whether you can get insurance again, as we've mentioned before, we strongly urge you to contact Steve and his staff at

TripInsuranceStore.com

But TALK with them by phone, do NOT just read the policy summaries on their website.

You have special insurance needs, but at least it's clear what the situation is.

Make sure you disclose EVERYTHING to them, so they can help you find a policy that will really "work" in case you need it.

As I mentioned earlier, we had a last minute medical emergency, and TravelInsured paid with no quarrels or stalling. (The only "delay" was OUR delay. Our first priority was dealing with the medical problem, which got worse before it got better. Once we had all the documentation in, the check arrived promptly.)

We had insurance that waived the pre-existing condition exclusions. At our ages, there's just too much "medical history", and I'm sure an insurer could find *something* if they wanted to find an excuse not to pay.

We don't know if that would have been a problem with that claim, but with the waiver, it was simply a non issue.

As for being "banned", we've no idea about whether/when/how often that might happen for medical needs (vs. disruptive behavior or such).

On the next cruise, on NCL, we had an unrelated medical emergency, requiring an ambulance; thank goodness we had just arrived in port.

It turned out that the ship's medical staff "did everything right" (per the local hospital and our own physicians/specialists back home), but it was prudent to spend a few hours of observation at the local hospital.

So, for the next cruise (now completed, WONDERFUL time, NO complications!), we contacted the NCL Access Desk, and needed to ask for some special arrangements to avoid the problem we experienced the previous cruise.

Yes, I half expected them to say, "Oh no you don't....!"

(We DID already have medical clearance from our own physicians, including carrying with us some of the same meds the ship's doctors had administered, so that we could start them much earlier, and the earliest hint of a problem, but it wasn't needed.)

Quite the opposite :)

NCL was happy to make some special arrangements for us, and we met with some officers upon boarding, and were stunned at the degree to which they had gone "above and beyond" what we had asked.

If they can do this in the future, we'll be seeing a lot of NCL, that's for sure.

Good luck, and glad you are feeling better!

For the computer --

Look into Dragon Dictate

DH has been using this program for years. The set up can take a while as it learns your voice but WOW does it work.

Disclaimer-- we have nothing to do with this company except as a happy user.
