Hi everyone

I am looking at booking a cruise next year from civitavecchia but would like to spend the day before in Rome. Which airport is best to land at for Rome? Then what is the best way (and cheapest) to get from Rome to the port the following day? Any help greatly appreciated.

Rome Airport, Fiumicino - Leonardo da Vinci airport is the airport into Rome. It's about a half hour ride into the ancient Rome area. Taking the train to the port is the cheapest way to go. There is a lot of great information in the Italy boards on Cruise Critic.http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=-1&f=595-This link should take you there! We have flown into Rome a few times before our cruises and took a car service to the port the day of embarkment but from what I've red the train is less money and pretty easy to do. Have fun planning this trip!!-Kade

For those considering the train, it is about 1/2 mile walk from the station to the port entrance. There is a sidewalk and it is slightly downhill from the station to the port

We would add that if taking the train from FCO you will also have to change trains to get to Civitavecchia. This can mean walking up and down steps (with your luggage) to get to your next train.

It would be terrible to sail from CV and not spend at least a day or two in Rome before sailing. The Leonardo express goes direct from the airport to Termini station in the middle of Rome. There are lots of reasonably priced hotels along Via Principe Amadeo - about a block or two from the station, and plenty of inexpensive restaurants. If you land in the morning, you will not be in the city and checked into your hotel before noon (you do not want to have to drag your bags around as you see the city) - and on sailing date, you will probably leave the city before noon - meaning that you will have very little time --- if at all possible, try to arrive it least two days before sailing. After all, how many times will you be in Rome?

You can take the train direct from the Termini station on sailing date, involving a bit of a walk with your bags, but the cheapest. What you should do is join the roll call for your sailing as soon as you book - you can connect with other passengers staying in Rome and share a van to the port on sailing date. We have done this twice - it comes to no more than ten euro per, and is a lot more comfortable to be picked up at, or very near your hotel. You will find very many staying in the immediate area of Termini to connect with.

Also, right at Termini the two metro lines cross - easy to get to the Vatican, or the Colliseum/Forum area, and many others quickly and cheaply.

I ditto the recommendation to hire a car from Rome to Port. We used RomeShuttleLimousine.com for 4-adults, plus luggage to and from. According to their website, the prices haven't changed since 2008. Well worth the worry free door to door service.
