Shuttle from pier into Melbourne

Does anyone here know how far it is from Station Pier to the center of Melbourne? We were planning on taking the Melbourne Visitor Shuttle around the city, since it is similar to a HOHO bus. But I think we need to get into the center of town first. Are there shuttles (either free or pay)?

It's about 5km. There isn't a free shuttle, you have the option of taxi at around $15 each way or tram, which would cost about $12-$15 dollars each depending on if it's a weekend or weekday. When we were there a few weeks ago the HOHO busses were actually at the end of the pier waiting to pick people up, rather than having to go into the city to pick it up.

Just walk off, go to local store at end of pier and purchase daily pass for tram 109. Around 7.50 AU. Takes you to city center. Then you can use city loop trolley. The daily ticket allow us to move up/down city faster , by just jumping on 109 again.

Thanks so much for all this information. I just like to know my options so I don't waste precious port time when we get there, wandering around and standing in line to ask someone how to do this. I have a plan now!

We were not going to do the official HOHO bus, but rather catch the Visitor Shuttle, and I don't think that goes all the way to the pier.

Thanks again!

We were there in early March.

There were a number of local buses that went into town. There was also a HOHO bus parked on the corner. We availed ourselves of this.

There are a number of cafes at the bus area. They off free wireless. We caught up while waiting for the HOHO departure time and then again when we returned. Signal strength was fine.

Jacs is correct, the HoHo buses come down to the pier...

For a faster ride into the centre the 'Tram' is also easily accessible from the pier...

There will be public transport running, usually on a Sunday timetable, however there may not be much else open on Good Friday.

We are doing two B2B cruises from Sydney to Auckland and from Auckland to Sydney and will be in Melbourne twice. Can we buy a transit pass that we can use on both days about three weeks apart? What type of pass and how much money should we put on it? I think once we get downtown we will most likely stay in that area.
