Yes you can use the Carnival Gift Cards for anything cruise related. From deposits, payments, on board charges, gratuities, casino, etc. I have used the Gift Cards for all of the above.

Thank you!

What can certificates be used for?

I believe the certificates can be used for paying for the cruise, but they must be redeemed (and your cruise booked) through their travel agency. Do you already have them or are you thinking about purchasing them? If you haven't bought any yet, then just go with the Gift Cards. They can be used either on board or before hand and for anything cruise related through Carnival.

I'm not sure if OP is talking about the Carnival gift certificates through Citi's Thank You Rewards, but these gift certificates do have certain restrictions. One example is in the T&C is says "Certificates are not accepted for existing reservations and can only be used toward new bookings." Unlike the gift cards that don't have restrictions.

I checked my redemption options on Citi Thank You Rewards and I don't even see Carnival gift cards as an option, only the gift certificates. I really don't want to order the gift certificates because of all the restrictions and would prefer to get the gift cards instead.

I agree. I remembered the Certificates having restrictions on them. Maybe you could call Citi and ask if they offer the GC. I don't know why the Thank You Rewards would be so different from the Easy Deals. Just different programs, I suppose.

Here is what was on mine I just bought from citi easy deals:

Redemption Instructions: To redeem towards the purchase of a Carnival cruise, call 1-800-Carnival or book online at http://www.carnival.com. To redeem towards activities/shore excursions or onboard gifts, drinks and fun, print and bring this e-card to the Guest Services Desk on board your cruise ship so it can be credited towards your Sail & Sign account.

So can be used on the ship

But you bought the Gift Card, right? That's what I did too. There's a difference between the Gift Certificate and the Gift Card. I don't believe the Gift Certificate can be used like that.

My experience is the same as bonnie&clyde. I ordered the certificates with Thank You points. They have been shipped, and I will book as soon as they arrive. It looks like they can't be used onboard or for excursions...only new bookings. I had no other options such as a gift card. Good luck!

The "Citi Easy Deals" have eGift Cards.

$100 gift card costs 10 points + $90.00

The terms state:

Carnival eGift Cards can be used for almost anything: towards the purchase of a Carnival cruise,activities/shore excursions, and redeemed onboard toward the Sail & Sign account for gifts, drinks, and fun.

I see these offered through the Citi Easy Deals program but also see the following under the terms and condistions.

TRAVEL AGENTS, AGENCIES OR ANY OTHER TRAVEL INTERMEDIARY SERVICE CANNOT BE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THIS DIGITAL GIFT CARD. Digital gift card is NON-COMMISSIONABLE at redemption.

So I don't think these can be used to pay for a cruise through a travel agent. Using them for OBC and to pay for excursions before departure should be easy enough.

Here is what it says on the actual egift card page after I purchased it (Identical to the terms when purchasing one directly through Carnival - in fact it refers you to their gift card website):
