mufi Posted September 18, 2007 #1 Share Posted September 18, 2007 The tiny blob of caviar that used to be on the menu in s.....ge once a week seemed to have disappeared on our last crossing. Is this still available in abundance to the exalted classes above stairs? Can it be ordered daily from room service? David.

Caviar??? Is that what it was? !!!!! I got some in the s.....ge canteen (aka the Mauretania) but I sent it back. The waiter asked me what was wrong with it. I said "nothing as far as I can tell, I just hate jam that tastes of fish". He looked at me kind of funny. Jimmy
highcbob Posted September 18, 2007 #4 Share Posted September 18, 2007 David, The price of Caspian Sea caviar has skyrocketed due to the decline in sturgeon and high demand. The only 'class' onboard ( at least on QM2 ) where Servruga ( the good stuff, not that frightful American Sturgeon ) is freely available is now Queens Grill. It is no longer freely available in Princess Grill although you can purchase an ounce at dinner for $35.00 - a real bargain these days - ( plus a 15% svce chge ) however, the waiters are, for some reason, hesitant to do so as they have to request it from the QG Maitre d'. Fifer Posted September 18, 2007 #5 Share Posted September 18, 2007 Last Christmas on QE2, the "fishy jam" was in very short supply. It was still available but only by special request to the Maitre d'. When approval was given, portion sizes were infinitesimal - compared to previous practice. Ah well, c'est la vie - or in this case, the lack of vie amongst the sturgeon population! Gavin

exlondoner Posted September 18, 2007 #7 Share Posted September 18, 2007 I know I sound like a spoilsport, but from the sturgeon's point of view (and that of caviar eaters in the future, if any), the less caviar is available the better.

VirginCruiser II Posted September 18, 2007 #9 Share Posted September 18, 2007 Ahh, caviar, I remember that. Back in the 70s I worked as a French Roulette croupier in a Mayfair casino for six years. Tipping of gaming staff (with money) in Great Britain is against the law but Champagne cocktails and Beluga caviar were my "tips" every night:p ! I have to confess to have gotten fed up with the stuff after a while! On the crossing I did last year on the QM2 I was kind of expecting caviar on maybe one occasion but, alas, it was not forthcoming.:(
happyscot Posted September 18, 2007 #10 Share Posted September 18, 2007 Would they do a cod roe sarnie instead if you asked?
Kindlychap Posted September 18, 2007 #11 Share Posted September 18, 2007 Caviar was still available in Queens' Grill (QE2) last January. As for Cabin Service? I'm hoping that Q2 status might mean something next month........ Matthew
Cruachan Posted September 18, 2007 #12 Share Posted September 18, 2007 Would they do a cod roe sarnie instead if you asked? Well, they managed to find black pudding for me at breakfast every day except the last one. On the basis of that relatively slim evidence, I can now claim to have eaten the QE2 out of black pudding. Mind you I didn't notice a lot of competition. Jimmy

rkacruiser Posted September 18, 2007 #14 Share Posted September 18, 2007 Would someone be kind enough to list the different types of caviar there are and the differences among them? I can never seem to keep them straight. Thanks!

msk68 Posted September 18, 2007 #16 Share Posted September 18, 2007 Caviar is available in the evenings upon request in the Queens Grill on the QM2. One of our traveling companions had it every night with his canapes. I think I remember them saying they load 45 lbs of it on every voyage (or at least they used to). We teased Alan and told him that he probably had 40 of the 45 lbs. ;) Oh yeah and he had it in his shirred eggs in the mornings as well LOL
