Using SQ FF miles

We have never used FF miles previously and have approx 15000 miles pp about to expire next month with Singapore Airlines. There is an option to extend the miles for a fee. Now we intend to fly next Xmas to HK and return from SIN on a cruise. Obviously the flights for this planned trip won't be open before our points are due to expire. At this point, we are unsure which airline we will be using next year as it appears many airlines have sale fares for J class seats throughout the year. I'm also considering flying from mainland Europe as sometimes the price difference can be huge, just by flying from say Amsterdam/Frankfurt etc. (tips I leant off this board, thanks :)).

So my question for the experts is: should I extend the points, is it worth it? We only have approx 60000 miles pp in total, which I know won't get me very far from the UK. However, if we flew from FRA then I could possibly use the points for the short haul flight to join my long haul sale fare. Hope that makes sense?

I don't know how Singapore Air works, but I had some soon-to-expire points in another airline and was able to "reset the clock" by paying for a sightseeing excursion with 2,000 of my miles. After the transaction, the clock "reset" on my remaining miles, giving me another two years before they expire again.

How much will it cost to purchase an extension for your points? Is it considerably less than what it would cost to just outright buy a ticket on a low cost carrier from the UK to FRA? And is there an airline on which you can use the SQ points to fly UK to FRA?

Here are SQ's redemption tables - https://www.singaporeair.com/pdf/ppsclub_krisflyer/charts/SQMI_OneWayAwardCharts.pdf and http://www.singaporeair.com/pdf/ppsclub_krisflyer/charts/StarAlliance_RoundTrip_Aug15.pdf (SQ metal and Star Alliance partners respectively.)

As you can see, 15K miles will get you a short-haul round trip or two one-way trips. In addition, KrisFlyer, like most FF plans, will likely extend your miles' expiration if you have any transaction at all earning or spending miles. Like everybody else, they have an online shopping mall in which you can buy some flowers or whatever, earn miles for it, and that will reset the expiration clock.

Yes, Lufthansa and we could also fly SQ to Munich direct from MAN. The extension cost would be significantly lower than a low cost carrier ticket, taking into account extra charges for baggage, time of year when flying etc.

Thanks for the links :). Yes, those 15,000 could come in handy ;).

Fly SQ J! :):)

Yes, we would love to fly the whole family routing in J with SQ, but unfortunately it may be out of our budget range :(. I'm crossing my fingers, and everything else, for a fabulous sale rate :D. Would you kindly check (link below) the Asia board as I have posted a question regarding the hotel you stayed at in Hong Kong with your family. Thanks :).

SQ offers an in-house round-the-world ticket in business class with a base price of £2727 (plus taxes and some surcharges depending on type of plane used and some specific route options.) There are some gaps in their coverage, for example across the USA, but a route such as MAN-MUC-SIN-HKG-SFO//JFK-FRA(-MUC)-MAN would be allowed.
