Hidden fee's and charges you were not expecting

What kind of fees or charges were on your Norwegian billing statement at the end of a cruise that were unexpected and therefore a surprise?

I'm booked on an Alaskan cruise and we are budgeted pretty tightly on this one saving most $$ for the excursions so I would like to know if any little fee's will be showing up on my billing at the end of it all if some of you know of any.

Alcoholic drink gratuities may be one or something in dining. We have the specialty dining for free but there may be a fee if you order something in the specialty restaurant not covered? :D

Let me know what you all have run across in the recent past. We are going on the Jewel in May for a 9 day cruise.

The "daily service charge" or gratuities will be charged to your final bill....of course, alcohol, sodas....anything you "sign" for that carries a charge. If you don't sign a tab, there should be no charge, and no "surprises"!

We've never had issues with our bill at the end of a cruise. You'll have your daily service charge and any expenses you signed for during your cruise. You will want to check your account periodically to make sure it's accurate as mistakes can happen, but there aren't any hidden fees that will surprise you on your bill. Enjoy your cruise!

Thanks but those are pretty basic and most of us know of them. I'm looking for the small fees added on when you purchase something that were extra due to the nature of the item. I heard a gratuity over and above the service charge we already paid up front is added on to things so that is what I'm looking for.

Fee's for a certain dish in the specialty restaurant, extra gratuities for buying a drink, room service fee's (not the one after midnight, I know about that one)

If you know about the daily service fee, auto-gratuity on bar tabs, auto-gratuity on spa treatments, and late-night room service fee, there's probably nothing else to talk about. These types of fees are clearly marked and publicized. Nothing hidden. If someone has done their homework, there should be no surprises.

Get your room steward to empty the mini-bar so you don't do the 'midnight, bit squiffy, grab a nightcap thing' and then forget about it in the morning.

Minibar charges are one area that seem to generate a lot of 'phantom' charges. We got charged a few (having emptied the fridge) and complained to GS. It turned out that another room steward had written the room number down wrong when doing the minibar audit. Our steward was not best pleased (he did get his extra tip because he was an excellent steward).

Agreed. There are no "hidden" fees. No "gotchas"

You seem to know quite a bit despite having asked this question.

The answer is simple. Other than the DSC, you will sign for EVERYTHING applied to your account. You will receive a copy of the receipt. There are no surprises.

The only thing I missed was tax added to some drinks while in Lousiana waters (we had the UBP), but that was my own fault for not reading up on it properly. In my defense, it was a last minute booking.

I also missed that up-charge entrees are included in the UDP, so I avoided them. No charges, but missed out on some lobster!!

I think what the OP is looking for is not really hidden charges, but unexpected charges i.e. charges for specialty desserts, coffees in the MDR, use of certain areas (outside of the spa).

I think most understand that if you sign for it, you are charged for it, but are there items that you would think are included but are not.

Nothing!!: Just remember, you do not have to spend anything, once you board the ship. As others have said, the DSC can be paid in advance. It is nice to come home and not have a bill. Just remember to pack enough of anything that you might need(batteries, pain medication, tums, etc).

Not really sure what you're seeking but.....

Drinks have an 18% additional charge for a drink. (not applicable to UBP)

Dishes in specialty restaurants, that have an additional charge, can be researched on NCL's website; clearly marked on the respective menus.

Pretty much this - You have to pretty dense to not see the menu sign for specialty restaurant(s) that says "Cover charge" on it or think that the casino is free. Not to be rude, but everything on NCL is pretty crystal clear when it comes to extra charges / expenses.

Edit: If possible, just check your onboard account via the TV or at Guest Services daily; if your worry about hidden fees.

Everything you sign for on your sign and sail card will be issued a receipt. We usually put them in one place in an envelope, and I can total the amounts as I go. It does come in handy to take to guest services if an errant charge makes it way onto your card. Keeping all your receipts is just a good idea.

In all of our NCL cruising we have never had fees that we didn't know about ahead of time.

Alcoholic drinks and sodas have a 15% (or is it 18%?) gratuity but that is on the bar bill when you sign it so no surprise on your final bill. And you probably already know about it.

In Specialty restaurant if you order an additional entree there will be extra charge but again it will be on the bill you sign so you'd know.

Except for the after midnight fee there is no room service charge although many of us tip the server a dollar or two in cash at the time. Many of us also tip the steward extra at the end of the cruise if service has been great, which it usually is, but that is not obligatory.

What you might want to do part way through the cruise is ask for a copy of your bill so far. That way you can check for errors if any. Occasionally we've had a mini-bar or water bottle charge on there by mistake. Easily corrected. But other than that we have never had any unexpected charges.

There's no surprise fee. Theres the budget you bring and what you choose or do not choose to spend money on. A drink requires a gratuity; eating at Cagneys requires a fee. You can absolutely go for seven days and not spend a dime besides the DSC.
