Is Quantum the worst ship ever?

Recommended Posts

Can you explain your references to "high Rollers"

Thanks

M

I can't remember the exact terminology but it was explained to us that it was for people enrolled in the casino players club.

Sounds like the OP was complaining more about some issues with the service and new itinerary growing pains. I wouldn't necessarily excuse the issues with the new ports, because it sounds like they should have been able to plan better, but it's not a reflection on the ship.

This was my opinion, I have only sailed on a handfull of vessels and your experiences and opinions are equally valid.

A ship is the sum of the hardware and the staff. The "Ship" itself was lovely, the cabin was great, the only complaint re 'hardware'was the removal of the Diamond Lounge. They noted the other changes on the deck plans, why not this?

Overall the lack of organisation and resolution processes made this ship, on this occasion, a 'dud'

Until they replace the staff with someone competant it will remain the worst ship in the fleet IMHO.

And as for the argument that these things need to be bedded in and will get better, tell this to the people who paid full price only to be used as crash test dummies.

Just returned from sailing on Quantum Singapore to Shanghai starting June 15. I cruised with my daughters, ages 15 and 20, whom I adopted from China as toddlers. There were quite a few little kids on board, but very few teens and early 20's.

In the Grande we saw people in sweats and men with open collared shirts, no tie or jacket. I almost didn't keep our resevation as our luggage was lost and the smartest outfit I could come up with was black trousers and shirt and some big hoop earrings. We wend to the hostess to ask if my attire was acceptable and found ouselves behind a woman with print leggins and something like a long-line sports bra.

The various tims we had to line up for things the staff person would ask where the rest of my party was, when my daughters were standing right beside me. We started holding hands when there were lines, and it still happened. Even though the girls don't look like me or each other, this only rarely happens in the US.

Disembarkation in Shanghai was horrible. At one point I began to feel faint and was afraid might be trampled.

I didn't say anything that even implied that I was invalidating your experience. In fact, I agree with most of what you said. But I did open the thread thinking it was going to be about the design of the Quantum class ships, but you were talking more about other issues with a particular sailing. That's all.

I always believe that when the cruise ship is not sailing from USA you will get bad service and probably get a less than expected vacations. But this is just me and I might be wrong but the concept is always in my mind

Huh... I have talked with many a room steward and waiter and they talk about their Asian and European or RTW sailings... Same crew, different ports.. I highly doubt service is driven by embarkation port or demographics of the passengers.

Personally the new super ships hold no interest for me. Sure larger enables some things but at somepoint it is like going to a supermall... whats the point? Huge crew.. so many things to manage, can see many ways this is less rather than more and better.

More just means more people to feed, more to deal with at shows, embarkation/disembarkation, feels like a Las Vegas experience...

Yes, I agree with overall sentiments on this thread, being in a Quantum Asia sailing itself.

The ship is beautiful, even the interiors and the stateroom!!! The only prob being the Daimond lounge removed.

What pales is the service, don't know perhaps many staff are all new hires due to the change of market so they are still in transition.

Apart with my issue with the stateroom security where I got an unauthorized entry in my stateroom, one minor issue is the cruise compass was not updated from the last sailing....

Like for example, it says we need reservations for Sequins and Feathers, but can't find it on the Royal IQ, so even purposely went to guest services to reserve, which is quite a walk as Quantum is a big ship, only to be told we don't need it in this sailing as the "Reservations needed" remarks are not updated from the previous sailing...

So many other instances like these in the cruise compass being not updated, but I already forgot about the others.

And the queue to bumper cars... chaos, the start of the queue was not clearly marked... leading to fights between guests on whoever lined up first as we all lined up in different areas thinking it was the official queue!!!

I did the 3 nighter from Singapore as well - the ship is beautiful - no fault with the ship at all.

But, the service was pretty bad. I was told that many brand new, raw staff joined in Singapore the day of 3 nighter. Now, I am all for a bit of on the job training but some of the staff were absolutely not ready for face to face interaction - no idea where they were or anything on the ship. We were abandoned in the middle of Chic when the boy showing us to the table couldn't decipher the table plan and he ran out the back and never returned!!!. It wasn't fair on them or on the passengers. 3 nighters are always a bit chaotic and this was probably the biggest schmozzle of a cruise I have ever been on.

Crowd control was non existent and passengers were left to rein in Q jumpers whilst staff just stood there ignoring the chaos. At Guest Services, the only staff member who would not serve Q jumpers was the Hotel Director himself - all the other staff were obviously too scared to say no.....but the rest of us in the Q weren't....grrrr - had to say a few choice words to a couple of them. I really HATE the layout of Guest Services - way too informal and no ropes to indicate where one should Q.

I'm giving Ovation a go in 2017 - 14 nights so I expect a better experience then.

Quantum of the seas - Singapore to Shanghai - June 2015

What they did poorly.

Embarking - C&A priority lines we full of people with no C&A status. The only priority lines being policed properly were the “high rollers” and suites.

Once on board we were told to let guest services know if we were visiting Maccau or Shenzhen on the Hong Kong stop. We let them know the first day. We then followed up a day later asking what the procedures were for getting the passports and were told that we were on the list and we would be notified the night before.

On the night before, the cruise compass said that guests going to Maccau or Shenzhen had notes in their room. We did not have a note so rang guest services to be told that we just needed to pick them up from Wonderland in the morning. We arrived at the designated time but they weren’t there and one of the staff rather rudely implied that it was our fault because the cut off for notifying them was 6pm the night before -sigh.

We waited while they checked and were told that they were downstairs in the customs hall and we had to go there to collect them. Well they weren’t there either and the people there sent upstairs in the hall to collect them, and no big surprise, they weren’t there either. There were a whole group of people they stuffed around who had to wait for someone to go find their passports. Finally, two and a half hours after the original start time they found our passports and they sent us out of the terminal.

But it wasn’t over. When we got to Shenzhen, we were told that we were not processed properly at the port and we could not leave Hong Kong for Shenzhen because we didn’t have a “landing” card. This meant another hour delay at the border while they fixed that up. In total THREE AND A HALF HOURS wasted, after doing every single thing that Quantum requested of us.

My wife is Gluten Intolerent and most times they would only offer jelly or prepackaged cookies as desert. The gluten free bread was also abysmal. The menus had lots of items that said GF versions were available but this was hit and miss. For example, my wife asked for the GF version of the Clam Chowder. The waiter brought her vegetable broth and when it was pointed out that it was the wrong dish, he said he thought she would have preferred it! She asked for the clam chowder and this time he brought her a leek and potato - maybe hoping we didn’t notice.

One night service was painfully slow and our waiter told us he was waiting for his section to fill up so he could take all the orders at once!

Quality of food was very ordinary and we did not like the dining options on the quantum.

Why do they continue with the charade of a dress code in the Grande? Some people got dressed up and looked great but they would let anyone in, in anything. The days of the formal nights are well and truly dead on the Quantum.

We received no notifications in our cabin regarding C&A benefits or the Meet & Mingle details. The Diamond lounge, although still appearing on the RCCL web site deck plans had been converted into a high rollers room. We like to spend our quiet time in the DL. Instead we had to get coffee on the promenade, and the top floor of the music hall was used as the temp DL during happy hour.

Due to fog/smog Shanghai port was closed and we were 12 hours late docking (4pm instead of 4am). We missed our lunchtime flight so booked another for 9pm. Luckilly we had a mobile phone and laptop so could do all the arrangements ourselves. But there were massive queues at the few public terminals. The ship tried to help as best they could. It did not help that we kept losing mobile phone coverage on this morning.

The ship said they would send letters to the rooms that could be used for insurance claims. They never did.

Because of our flights and the fact that we paid the cruise line for the airport transfer, we were supposed to be one of the first groups off. But organisation was non existent, we lined up when asked at 5pm and it took us 2 hours to get to the luggage section. It was complete chaos. We asked where luggage tag 56 was and was told the numbers were on the wall. I pointed out that there was no 56 on the wall and the luggage under the number 58, included tags in the 60’s and mostly consisted on tags in the 80’s. He shook his head and said we would need to go through and see if we could find them ourselves. So once we had our luggage we asked where the prepaid airport shuttles were and the lass told us they we waiting to fill a bus of 40 and it would probably be another 30 minutes. Well at a quoted time of 1 and 1/2 hours to the airport and a 9pm flight, the safest option seemed to be a taxi.

Whoever was in charge of getting the luggage off should be sacked.

What did they get right?

We loved the iFly and Wonderland. The internet was expensive but faster than I get back home in Sydney. The virtual balcony in the inside cabin was really quite good - much better than we were expecting. There was a good variety of food in the Windjammer so it was actually a better option than the main restaurants most nights.

The Bionic Bar looked good but a taste test revealed that it was really just a more expensive way to get a weaker drink in a plastic cup. After watching it once it was about as thrilling as watching paint dry.

The shows in Two70 were visually impressive - not so much fussed on the songs though.

The nightlight in the bathroom and the footrest inside the shower were simple but great innovations.

The bad far outweighed the good and the bottom line is that we will never sail on Quantum again.

Having sailed on the Quantum I think many more negatives then you list. Very poor crowd contol . The overall design of the ship bad. We will stick to Oasis or Freedom class when sailing on RC. We sailed from NJ and it was a nightmare.

People who go on a brand new ship, or a brand new itinerary, and expect everything to be perfect are THEMSELVES the problem.

For heaven's sakes, if you want a ship that's polished and runs like a well-oiled machine, go on an older ship on a familiar and well-established (and very routine) run. One where the staff knows the run well and there are less likely to be surprises.

Personally I spent 27 days onboard Quantum, and I loved the ship (despite there admittedly being a few things that could have been done better).

But "worst ship ever"???! Give me (and the rest of us!!) a break.

Well, if that's the case then the cruise should be priced accordingly until all the bugs are ironed out. We are paying for 'polished, well-oiled ship' not an unorganized, expensive trial run.

BTW, I cruised on the NCL's POA the year after it's first sailing, and it had many issues associated with all the new changes. They adjusted the rates accordingly (reduced rates) until they ironed out the problems. And don't forget Carnival, they are practically giving away their cruises, but we had a great experience on our most recent cruise with them.

Don't get me wrong, I love RCI cruising but I also pay a lot more for their cruises than other main stream cruise lines, and I expect more than other cruise lines.

Do the cruise lines advertise these as trial runs? Does the average person know if it is a brand new ship or a brand new itinerary?

How long do you allow before the ship gets their act together?

Really, with such ridiculous comments I can't decide if you are a troll or just an "owner operator".

Years ago I sailed on the Disney Magic a few months after it started sailing and it ran like clockwork. It's not an entirely fair comoarison as it was only going to the Bahamas, but like someone else said, I did not appreciate being a "crash test dummy." Also I would add that RCI needs to instruct its young male employees to not openly flirt with 15 year old female passengers.

My wife & I were also on the recent Singapore to Shanghai sailing. I respect that everyone on here including OZBRIAN has their own personal opinions in regard to this ship & cruise. In my opinion our cruise was mostly positive & would not hesitate to cruise on the Quantum again at the right price. We were very lucky to snag a fantastic last minute price for this cruise that was too good to refuse & as such, in retrospect the minor problems were just that, minor.

As for the original claims made at the start of this post, here was our experience:

Embarkation: We were Gold status & this did take a while. There were more people in our line than the newbies. I use a walking stick to get around & I appreciate when there are special lines for us that are somewhat disabled, but only noticed one of these special lines at the security point.

Macau: pretty much had the same silly dramas with our passports. We registered on the first day, enquired about it on the 3rd day & the day before Macau we were told we were not even on the list. After a long conversation at Guest services we were finally on the list & received written confirmation in our stateroom. The next morning at Wonderland we were told to get our passports inside the Port building. Well we walked all the way outside to the taxi bay & did not see anyone handing out passports despite asking 3 officials along the way. Upon re-entering the building we came across many other disgruntled passengers in the same boat (pardon the pun). After about an hour someone finally showed up with our passports & then had a go at us saying that ours had been downstairs the whole time even though all of us swear black & blue that we didn't come across any sort of passport counter. After all of this we got to the ferry terminal at Kowloon & when going through Immigration the same thing as what happened to the original poster happened to us. Apparently we didn't have the right stubb inserted in our passport from when the ship entered Hong Kong. Luckily a manager came over & had it all sorted within about 10mins. Overall we wasted about 2 hrs through this whole process the morning we wanted to hurry up & get to Macau.

Food & service: We sail Royal for their amazing ships not for their food. I personally have had better food & service on other Cruise lines, both cheaper & more expensive. We did however like the dynamic dining concept. We tried American Icon the first & last nights of the cruise. The first night food was not bad but the service was the worst I have ever come across of my 12 cruises. Seriously it was terrible. The last night service was better but the food was horrible. Chic in contrast was much, much better & ate there twice also. Silk was nice overall but thought the ambient lighting was just too dark. Never tried Grande. Of the fee paying eateries we tried Jamies twice & loved it, it was clearly our favourite on board. We also tried Chops Grill & were very disappointed. We always do a steakhouse on each cruise & they have always been great but this was terrible. Once again the lighting was very low, the service was only average & the meals bland & not worthy of the extra price. Presentation on the plate was clearly lacking & the food just didn't excite the tastebuds. Windjammer was ok food wise but it seemed everyone else on the ship was there the same time as us. Some days we did a full lap around & could still not find a spare seat/table, Once again this is extra annoying as remember I use a walking stick, so trying to find a spot while balancing a plate of food ain't easy! Food from the cafe's were very quick, nice & easy but the pizzas were quite bland.

In regards to C&A & M&M we did receive all info in our Staterooms as normal.

As for Shanghai Disembarkation, well no-one can be blamed for the fog. However the whole process was handled very poorly. The ship apparently anchored out of the harbour at about 3am, It would take another 5 hours of sailing from this point to Dock. So all passengers were up early to meet in their respective areas to get ready to get off but No, it wasn't until about 9am that they told us we would still be hours away from docking and we could return to our rooms. They could have told us this two hours earlier & we could have slept in some more or not have rushed to Breakfast, etc. Later in the day when we finally could get off we were lucky that we did self assist with our luggage & didn't have to put up with all the craziness in the terminal. However we were in line waiting to get off the ship for a long time because many people in front of us had gotten into line well before their number had been called. This just meant that not only did they hold us up but they then standed around in the cramped area in the terminal waiting for their luggage & adding to the confusion. This was very poorly handled by RCI. We then got a taxi into the city where we already had a hotel booked.

In regards to everything else, we loved our stateroom, a balcony up on deck 13. Was very nicely & cleverly appointed & very comfortable & loved using my wow band to open the door. We loved the seaplex & bumper cars as well as the North star. We did this over Hong Kong which made for amazing views. 270 lounge was amazing as was the Music hall. The Theatre entertainment was a bit hit & miss. I thought the shows in the second half of the cruise were better. The overall layout of the ship was great & everything felt new, clean & somewhat luxurious. My fav area was the solarium up front and spent a lot of time lounging around there.

Overall we had a great time & would cruise the Quantum again for the right price/Itinerary.

Haven't sailed on Quantum, but I think your example above is why Royal Caribbean doesn't really have much interest in being "enforcers" on things like dress code, because you have people who will make a scene, if they're denied the ability to do whatever they want.
And actually saw something that made my day! Had this douce*** refuse to put on a jacket at the Grande and gave the hostess a horrible time! Made the mistake of using a few "bad" words in front of our group and others. Low and behold security showed up took him aside and no Grande for that fool, at least that night! He walked away mumbling under his breath, I was elated and our group enjoyed a fine meal that evening at the Grande....K.O.:)

Not sure if this was the same sailing but my friend told me today of her church group of 74 people had a very negative experience on Q. They boarded in NJ and everything was fine until the changes started to be made enroute: casino space was enlarged, one entertainment space (Music Hall?) disappeared, new high priced shops added, signs changed from English to Chinese, etc. Truly amazed at how quickly things were changed over. As soon as they reached first port, whole new Chinese crew boarded. Service level dropped dramatically.

When she returned she home sent a letter detailing her dissatifaction only to receive the standard form letter response: "Thank you for taking the time to write us, etc.". She is very unhappy that her TA didn't advise her of what would be happening during the voyage. Probably will be going to the media to voice her feelings of being sold one thing and receiving quite another experience by RCL. Not an inexpensive cruise for the 74 people involved. Obviously, she will not be booking another cruise with RCL.

We were on the Quantum Barcelona to Dubai and Loved everything about the ship and the Dynamic Dining.

We were disappointed that Momma Mia was not on the ship but there were many excellent shows that we enjoyed.

We had 3 excellent lecturers and went to all the talks.

We though the food was the best we have ever had and we have done over 60 cruises. It was so much fun going to different restaurants every night.

Re Diamond lounge there were so many of us that for part of our cruise they opened Music Hall top floor then it was closed for renovations and they used part of Bolaros was it ideal no but it was still fun and we met some lovely people and the drinks flowed like water, also they had hot and cold food.

The Diamond lounge would make a perfect room for the high roller room. Yes the Asians like to gamble and shop.

270 degrees at the back of the ship was an amazing room, excellent shows and the roast beef sandwiches(like Park Café) and great salads made for wonderful lunches.

We loved the ship so much we are booked on the Anthem and cannot wait to show our family this wonderful class of ships.

"She probably will be going to the media".....Sorry that's hilarious! What is she going to do have her own press conference in front of RCL headquarters in Miami!......:rolleyes::rolleyes:

This was the same cruise, although I did not see any signs in Chinese. They were getting it ready for the Asian season and I knew of some of the planned changes before we left as we looked for the Diamond Lounge on the deck plans. That was one change they did not list.

I think there were 4 or 500 people who did the full 53 days from NJ. The trip was referred to as the "Global Odyssey"

I also did not notice a high percentage of Asian staff although that would be a sensible thing to do for a ship based in Asia.

I'm sorry to hear your friend did not like the changes - or was made aware of them before she left.

I agree with most of what you say, apart from the fact that the lecturer on the Singapore to Shanghai leg was probably the worst we'd seen. This is very subjective as others may have loved him. Most of your points are subjective too. For example, we spoke to people who hated Wonderland yet we loved it, (it was the nicest dirt I had ever eaten!!) Shows on our leg were generally quite good.

What ruined our trip was our passports being lost in HK and 3 1/2 hours of our shore day wasted.

And also paying for an airport transfer as we needed to be sure to catch an internal chinese flight only to be royally stuffed around for over 2 hours and left to fend for ourselves in a country where we couldn't speak the language and where English isn't spoken by a lot of the locals.

Someone who was staying at a hotel in Shanghai would not have had any of the stress we had.

Likewise, someone not going to Maccau or Shenzhen would have had a great day in HK.

Clearly, you are in the minority. Based on my personal experience on the ship and reading the reviews, only about 48% of the people gave the Quantum a positive review. My mistake was thinking they must all be wrong and we will have a wonderful time- Of course being on a cruise and visiting different ports is interesting- but the ship as a venue overall was poor to fair.

I was incorrect about other peoples opinions and cancelled our upcoming Anthem cruise. When sailing royal- will stick to the Freedom and Oasis class

For me among the ships currently in Asia (Quantum/Mariner/Voyager) . Voyager has the best service overall. That is why I am sailing her for the 3rd time this Oct.

Perhaps it might be that she is sailing both Australia and Asia so is more balanced in terms of ship's culture?

Quantum, as we all know, is exclusively China all year round.

If that's the case, then Ovation might be more suited for most us as it sails both Asia and Australia like the Voyager.

Can't say for Legend as I haven't sailed her yet.

but of course, each of us have different sets of experiences.

The worst part was that she had to deal with the other 73 disappointed people in her group some of whom blamed her for not informing them of the changes being made on board!:( Needless to say, many, if not all, of the group of 74 people had they known of the planned changes would not have booked. What started out as a great trip ended up on a sour note since there was a great sense of having paid a good sum of money and receiving a completely different product that in their estimate was not what they paid for.

While you may choose to ridicule her feelings, 73 other passengers in her church group booked the sailing based upon what RCL advertised when the booking was made. Clearly, they did not receive the experience they expected nor did RCL advise their TA of the changes.
