Law Enforcement discount

This may be a bit of a weird question, but does the discount (when available) only apply to paid LEO's? I currently work for my local LE agency in a non-paid capacity, and can't find anything on RCL's site with any details.

I'm going to call C&A and ask, but was hoping the experts on CC had an answer.

It is only for actual law enforcement officers. Does not apply to civilians working for law enforcement. Even if you had an ID from the jurisdiction where you work, it probably won't state you are law enforcement. This happened to a friend of mine. He tried to get the discount, but couldn't.

If asked, you would have to show them a photo ID issued by the Law Enforcement Agency or Police Department that you work for.

My TA told me I just had to show my badge and photo ID badge.

According to the rules on their website, volunteers get the discount too. It's NOT just for sworn officers. I am a non-sworn crime analyst for the local sheriff's office where I live and I'm able to get the discount.

From the RCI Website: At least one guest in the stateroom must be an active or retired employee or volunteer of a local or state law enforcement agency, fire department or Emergency Medical Services unit in the United States or Canada.

Qualified guests must present valid proof of employment (badge or ID) plus a second form of identification when boarding the ship. The offer is not valid where restricted by applicable law.

They tell you to bring your department ID but the one time I've used the discount so far I didn't have to show it. I'm using it again end of November so I'll see if they ask for it then.

But... what if you are retired firefighter? I don't have an ID or badge.... anyone know?

Retired firefighter is eligible:

I think the question is, when you're retired, you no longer have ID or a badge. I am in the same position, retired non-sworn, no longer have department ID and never had a badge. Any clue?

I am a civilian, a Telecommunications specialist for my police dept. I pay police union dues and work midnights, weekends, holidays and get mandated to stay past my shift on a regular basis so I def earned it. I just show my work i.d. when they happen to ask for it, which isn't often. Have never had a problem and for those that say it isn't worth it, my husband and I just received 228 dollars EACH off our Liberty cruise we just booked.

I would call RCCL and ask them what would be acceptable. Perhaps a letter from your former agency.

To the posters saying the LEO discount is not worth the trouble: I have used it several times and can assure you it is absolutely worth it and it is no trouble at all.

You would need some sort of documentation that you are eligible if you are asked at check-in. Perhaps you can get some sort of letter from your former department.

I have used it several times and have gotten discounts of at least $100. I have never been asked to show ID but always have my photo ID which lists my name, EMS agency, job title, and picture. If you don't have an iD I would suggest some kind of a letter on dept letterhead but am not aware of anyone who was not allowed to take the discount based on lack of proof.

Thanks. After reading this, I dug around a bit on RCL's site and found the link. I haven't found a cruise that offers the discount yet, but it's good to know that I would be eligible for the discount if I did find one.:)

My fear is if they ask and disallow it, you have to make up the price to the current cabin price, which could be bad.

Is it for employees? If so, that would include non-law enforcement officers, I would think. Do you have a reference to support this?

The link in post #10 seems to indicate that all employees would be eligible.

It says employee of, does not specify only sworn officers.

I have used the discount on one cruise...and it saved my wife and I around $125 each.

We have snagged a LE discount twice, once for a total difference of $600!:D Bringing husband's badge & ID has always been stressed but both times, he was not asked for it.

Sherri:)

I always tell rci I am a career firefighter while making the reservation for my family and have never ever gotten a discount. Been a carreer firefighter for ten years and have tried to get this discount for six cruises now on all diff classes of royals ships and never get it.They say my state connecticut is not eligible Strange some get this discount and others dont. And anytime I go online to create a future cruise it never gives me a discount when i enter it in the dropdown list. Same price without putting it in.. Ticks me off Im always told its not applicable even though its right in the drop down menu to enter.

I called RCI a few months ago, asking the question of whether you had to be a LEO or just work for a law enforcement agency. RCI's response was that all you had to do was have ID that showed you worked, in any capacity, for a law enforcement agency.

If you're still unsure... do what I did, just call. :)
