Melbourne Wins 6X "World’s Most Liveable City"

Recommended Posts

Congratulations to Melbourne!! From the London/UK Telegraph yesterday, they have this headline: "crowned the best to live in for the sixth year in a row" with these highlights: "Melbourne has been awarded the title of 'world’s most liveable city' for the sixth year in a row. The Australian city pipped Vienna to the top spot by the narrowest of margins in the annual study by the Economist. Its rankings take into account stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure, and the top five remained unchanged from last year, with three Canadian cities, Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary, taking third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Only 0.3 points separated the top four cities."

Melbourne got a rating of 97.5. Close behind at sixth, seventh and eighth positions were: Adelaide, Australia (96.6), Perth, Australia (95.9) and Auckland, New Zealand (95.7). Vancouver was the last city to rank first before Melbourne’s run at the top.

The worst? Here was their "top four" for the lowest of the least livable cities: Damascus, Syria (overall score: 30.2), Tripoli, Libya (35.9), Lagos, Nigeria (36) and Dhaka, Bangladesh (38.7)

Their web-available report does not give more details for other cities in the ranks from 11-50. They do note a certain part of their rankings involve safety. They note: "The continuing weakening of global stability scores has been made uncomfortably apparent by a number of high-pro le incidents that have not shown any signs of slowing in recent years. Violent acts of terrorism have been reported in many countries, including Turkey, Australia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, France, Belgium and the US."

Thanks Terry.

As nice as Melbourne is to visit, I wouldn't want to live there. Same can be said for Sydney.:D

Or even Canberra, only one place I really want to live, though if it had to be a capital It would be Hobart or Adelaide.

Congratulations and well deserved!! Yes I myself lived in Melbourne and last time I had a home out in Greensborough and was a buyer for Myer Melbourne Limited.

My Mother was Australian and I still have a lot of In-Laws as well as Out-Laws that still live in your Magnificent Country.

My cousin is Paul Hanley the Tennis Pro that represented Australia in The Olympics in Beijing in 2008 and my Mom and Dad's Wedding Photos hang in The National Archives in Canberra as my Mother was a Professional Singer and Entertainer and met my Dad from out in West Texas a Cowboy, fell in Love and got married in Saint Patrick's Cathedral.

Anyways I guess that this just goes to show the rest of The World why it is that you folks there that are from Down Under just simply know a secret as to being able to enjoy life to The Fullest.

Best Wishes

PS

Hoping to meet some of you fine folks on A Scenic Cruise Spectacular South Of France with Paris and Monte Carlo September 24,2017.

Cheers

Maybe we should elect Trump as PM.

Wash your mouth out with soap and never say that again. :(

Having been lucky enough to travel to various parts of the world and Australia, I think for all our faults here we have some lovely places to share with other people.

I love Melbourne, but am biased as have family there. But Sydney, Hobart, Adelaide, Perth etc are all lovely. I still haven't made it to Canberra yet but it's on the list.:)

I'm pretty much the same but with a preference for the smaller cities, absolutely love Hobart Adelaide and Perth, Like Canberra, not a big fan of Sydney Melbourne or Brisbane.

Not so fast for Melbourne and Australia to be celebrating on their top world ranking.

From the London/UK Telegraph yesterday morning, they have this headline: "Move over Melbourne – this is really the world’s most ‘liveable’ city" with these highlights: "If you’re confused about which city really is the world’s most “liveable”, now a new survey has given Copenhagen the bragging rights. The Danish capital came out on top in Metropolis Magazine’s annual study, which judges major cities around the world on housing, transportation, sustainability and culture. Berlin came second and Helsinki third. Copenhagen was praised for its public amenities, environmental ethos and transport infrastructure, which has a strong emphasis on cycling."

Lots of interesting background in this story for Copenhagen, Berlin and Helsinki, plus comparisons with other such world survey that have been completed to rank top cities.

Congratulations to Copenhagen and its wonderful people for their great history, architecture and character, etc.

But for Melbourne, this Metropolis Magazine survey had them ranked as eighth best in the world. Being "Top Ten" is still very good.
