Gay couple on a Disney cruise?

We found a great transatlantic cruise on Disney Magic and allthough we read a lot of good things about it, we are still a little hesitant. On the one hand we see ourselves surrounded by screaming and running kids the whole day and on the other hand we also ask ourselves if we as a gay couple would be welcome in this surrounding?

Even if we read that there is a lot going on for adults with some areas dedicated to them, we would appreciate any recommendations or tips if this is a good choice for us?

Usually there are not a lot of kids on transatlantic voyages but that might be different here as well...?

I haven't cruised with Disney but some general comments:

- departure date might give some insight in that school breaks or holidays may mean more children onboard

- transatlantic cruises generally have fewer children from what I've read...often because of price, length of cruise and keeping the child entertained on sea days

- Disney appeals to families and adults.

- Children are often great LGBT allies because many are being raised in more tolerant households now than ever before.

- Lastly, if your both kids at heart you will fit right in :)

I would just go and enjoy it, if anyone has a problem then it's their problem, not yours.

You will probably find that there will be hardly any kids on this as a lot of them will still be at school, it does tend to be an older clientele on these crossings.

enjoy.

We are a mid 40s Lesbian couple who have done 2 Disney Cruises. There are kids, but except for embarkation day, it wasn't ever overwhelming. We found the staff very welcoming and accepting. We hope to do a Transatlantic or Panama Canal with Disney someday.

We have also cruised NCL, Carnival, and Holland. Disney is our favorite, followed by Holland. Disney wins because of friendly staff, comfortable rooms and they are very adept at handling my multiple food allergies.

I will say we have only sailed the Magic, not one of their larger ships.

Huge DCL fans here!!! Done both the Wonder and Dream and love them both for different reasons. If you are Disney fans.....the experience is only enhanced... If hearing one more Disney tune will send you into orbit (and I have gay friends who feel that way) a TA on DCL may not be the optimal DCL cruise for your first time... The adult only sections.....adult only excursions....late dining so most kids disappear half way through dinner.... I feel there are less kids around than other lines that don't offer this. I look foward to the day that we can take DCL on a TA or Panama Canal trip...

My partner and I did the Panama Canal cruise on the Disney Wonder last year. It was 2 weeks in Oct/Nov. I think there were 300 kids which is very few by Disney standards, most of them pre-school. They had a whole deck where the kids go during the day. I got us involved with the other passengers through the Facebook page for the cruise. They organized gift exchanges, alcohol tasting groups, pajama breakfasts, and lots of other activities. These Disney cruisers are intense Disney fans and they are lots of fun. We were able to arrange our table mates through the Facebook connection. Very fun and compatible folks who I still connect with on Facebook. It was a very long and relaxing cruise. The Canal was awesome. But it is all Disney all the time and the other cruisers are really into it. So we just joined the fun. Only saw a couple of other gays on the ship but they weren't very friendly towards us. But with the connections we made on the cruise Facebook page, we had plenty of compatible folks to party with on the ship. Not sure if I would do another Disney cruise, but I really enjoyed the one we were on.

Thank you so much for all that helpful input!

It really sounds like a unique experience and even if we are not 100% decided (yet) we might go for it at least to try if it is right for us!

All your comments helped a lot to get an idea of what to expect on this transatlantic crossing!

We did our first DCL cruise this fall and it was great. We were accepted and treated with much respect.

In fact, we came back to our stateroom one evening to find this on our bed. We asked the steward and he said it was just his gift to us. Very nice!!

Thank you all for your logs - I only began cruising last year and am hooked. I'm taking my partner for his first cruise on the Ovation of the Seas. I've watched/researched the internet & lots on YouTube and would love to experience a Disney Cruise. Admittedly at first I though it may appear funny gay guy on a Disney Cruise, as fearful of other people's perceptions, but I love the Disney brand & it looks like a lot of fun & was disappointed to learn that Disney doesn't do adults only. Your logs have helped eased my concerns, but now it's a matter of convincing my friends & other half, but shall wait until he has his first cruise experience under his belt lol

Thanks again

My husband & I have done 17 Disney cruises, mostly the long ones (TATL, Panama Canal, HI). We love it. Kids are segregated away. We have made many straight friends from the US, the UK, Germany as well as some gay friends. DCL is very gay friendly. We have never made any negative experiences. We now even have some Republican friends! LOL! I can only recommend DCL highly.

Glad to read people's experiences have been good since Disney certainly is gay-positive as a company.

What is there to do all day on a Disney cruise? I've tried reading Disboards and the forum here, but it's often so over-the-top rah-rah that I'm skeptical about what keeps the adults entertained. I'm used to Celebrity, which is not exactly high energy, but then I keep reading that there is not even a casino on DCL ships, so I'm at a loss as to what fills the hours.

I am fine with the Disney parks and don't hate Disney at all but am not a hardcore fan. I know my sister is going to make me go with her family at some point, so I guess I need to steel myself.

On a typical day, I sleep through breakfast, have lunch, relax on the balcony or maybe go to the spa or play trivia or hit the hot tubs when the crowds have died down late afternoon, have dinner, and see a show or two. Plenty of drinks throughout the evening but not too crazy. I do not like the pool or laying out in the sun. Mixed in there is playing in the casino. I don't spend countless hours in it, but it's definitely a daily activity and sometimes several visits throughout a day. I travel with my best friend, and he's the same (which is why we travel together).

Probably would be easier for me to know: what are the typical daytime activities planned for adults on a sea day?

With the exception of the casino...you're good to go with everything else.

We're spa/pool people, so we got the spa package. We also enjoyed Satellite Falls, which is an adult only area. There is no pool, but there is a lot of shade and it has a great water feature to get wet in the heat.

I totally agree with this. We sleep late, sometimes do breakfast. I go to the sauna/spa. Sit in the adult outside area and relax, read, drink. On DCL we do lunch either at the buffet or one of the dining rooms. They have cooking demos, wine tasting, mixology seminars, movies in the Buena Vista Theater. Trivia contests. Dance lessons. Great broadway style evening shows. On the longer cruises they often have celebrities. Once we had Charo. Once Jeremy Jordan.

Don't worry about it. We did the Dream and it was a great time. Allot of Disney employees were cruising with us and mostly gay, not to mention Peter pan :-). We still keep in touch with our table mates from years ago when we went.
