  1. The iPhone "Framing Architecture" class was soooo good. I was the only one so it was 90 minutes of personal instruction. we walked around part of Downtown Salt Lake City for the class. Dave had me looking at more than just the building or fountain, but look all around for interesting lines everywhere. Learned how to do a Panoramic shot. Downtown has such diverse architecture, from red rock buildings from the pioneer days, to the old Temple, office buildings from the 60s to today, trying to get modern but still keep the original mormon base. Here are a couple of my favorites from today. Next up will be one of the portrait classes. Ended up stopping by TJs on the way back home and picked up some salad makings and soups for the weekend. OOTD was my jeans and my white henley Tshirt, pink hi tops and my latest Gigi Pip hat (the Zephyr in Creme). Classy old hippie lady 😸
  2. Thanks for coming back and giving a review! One weird question: There was a sinkhole that opened up in front of the Antico Salumeria in 2020. it ended up showing some ancient ruins. What is there now? Sitting at an outdoor table on any piazza, drinking aperol spritz or nice little wine and noshing is one of ny favorite activities anywhere in italy!
  3. I also use the Tru Earth wash sheets. both home and traveling. I can split 1 sheet into quarters for a sink wash. I'm also a "if I can't wash and hang dry, it doesn't go with me" person. Did 31 days in Europe this summer with just my carryon. Did a month working at a hotel in Hilton Head a few years ago and did my laundry in the sink. I'm one of those who don't mind. But, some aren't. That's the way it is. I won't judge 😸
  4. Mr Toblerone - keeping you in good thoughts. Enjoy the lake trip. Whistler is an awesome place. There is so much to there besides just skiing/riding. I'll keep thoughts that your trip goes through. Today's my iPhone Architecture class. looking forward to it! Maybe it's over around 4pm, so I might scout out a place for an early dinner. I eat downtown, really down in the Valley, very rarely so it'll be fun. Nice weather for the rest of the week, highs around 70 up here. It'll be a 'sweatshirt in the morning, Tshirt in the afternoon" kind of few days. OOTD: I'll put on jeans and a Tshirt for the trip down the mountain since it'll be around 78 or so in the Valley.
  5. Sherri - glad you got home ok but bummed about your DH. I'd have him go to the md and get some of the covid meds - i think it's called Paxloid or something. Taken within 5 days, it's supposed to help. With all the coughing you heard - now you know why in feel like i need to have a 'this is not a covid cough' sign around my neck when I go out. 😸 Didn't go leaf-peeping. i had a little issue that i had to take care of - my bottom sheet on my bed ripped! I had to go out and find new sheets. it wasn't as easy as i thought. The Bed Bath and Beyond down the road was woefully unstocked from the last time i got sheets there. But, with necessity and not being able to order online, I ended up just picking one of the 4 King sets they had and only using the bottom. Maybe i'll go online and find something nice, but I'm not in a hurry now. OOTD: 56 in the house in the AM, so joggers and a sweatshirt. I'll switch later to a Tshirt when it warms up in the house - got up to 65 yesterday (when the heat is on, i keep it at 66 daytime, 61 night).
  6. First - good to hear things went OK for your property with Ian. When i saw that he was swinging right over the Space Coast I thought of you, Sherrie, and my friend who has property in Cocoa Beach. So, so sorry you had to cancel your Glacier trip. i hope both you and your DH get everything fixed up on the bodies. At least you got most of your money back for another time. Eugene - hmmm. Have you done a So. OR/No. CA shoreline trip before? Did it once and had a great time. Added in Crater Lake, too. And, Redwood National Park and all the beach camping and state parks along the way.
  7. Finally heard from the South Carolina family contingent. Other than being without power, all is good. Looking at the teaser for Stanley's Season 3, the woman at the very end who is eating pasta with him is the daughter of one of the women who guided me with restaurant suggestions on my first trip to Rome and to Florence (Elizabeth Mincelli). This was back in the day when Chowhound was pretty active and got input and questions answered from all sorts of folks. Hope all went well with Cynthia's flights to Europe!! Lois - my MD and NP both retired to I had to find another. I'm not totally thrilled with my current NP but I've gone to that office since i moved here in 1988 so I'll endure her. If either of my old providers had moved down into the Valley instead of retiring, I would have driven down to see them. OOTD: lazy day with a little more cleaning, so joggers and a Tshirt. Tomorrow i may try to get up to the mountains to do a little leaf peeping. I have to choose between going up to the Uintas or down to the Alpine Loop. But, it'll be my camping pants and a fleece since it's in the low 50s/upper 40s in the mountains now.
  8. The TGV train from Avignon to CDG 2 is direct but non-stop. You don't have to change trains, just stay onboard until the train reached CDG. I took the TGV from CDG2 to Marseille in July. The train stopped several spots, including Avignon. You'll be fine.
  9. That is in my top 5 churches I've visited around the world! I go there every time I'm in Rome. Also inside at the main alter is the tomb (minus her head - another story) of St. Catherine of Siena. The church is indeed very plain from the outside, but is magnificent inside.
  10. It's from my old Girl Scout and backpacking days. Working at the resort hotels, the duct tape was used by many a bridesmaid to fix things. i just roll some on a pencil and toss in the bag. I still follow the "Be Prepared" motto 😸
  11. Little update: my friend's caretaker of the house and cottage down in Cocoa Beach just told me "things are a mess, but it'll be OK." She has a lot of tropical landscaping around the property and they most likely lost fronds, etc. Still haven't heard from the S. Carolina crowd other than my grand-niece posting "so far, so good." A friend of mine up here told me about the annual Planned Parenthood fundraiser in November. it's a 'gala drag' theme, with drag performers, comedians and bands. Suggested attire is "Drag optional, glitter requested, pink preferred." good thing the ticket is too expensive - i have NOTHING to wear!!! I guess I could go drag as a guy - i saw a gorgeous rainbow-sequined jacket on one of my websites - pair the jacket with black pants, pink Tshirt and my black fedora 😸 But the jacket and T would cost more than the $150 ticket!!! just got an email from the boss, asking me if i want to come back. i said "absolutely." so, I start 12/2 with my usual 11-7 shift and Wed/Thu off. so I have 2 more months of play time.
  12. Get your Italian snacks and aperativos ready!! Rumor is that Stanley will visit Puglia, Sardinia, Liguria and Calabria. When it airs on the 9th may be dependent on your location's CNN timing. Buon Appetito e Buona Visione!!🍷🍕
  13. Hmmmmm. i've been thinking about this for a couple of days. headlamp instead of a little flashlight. keeps the hands free. Also allows me to keep reading when the power goes out at a hotel (did this in Bordeaux this summer) a lightweight, foldable tote bag. Can use it for a day bag, a beach bag, a market bag. Eco-friendly so that i don't take the single-use bags at stores. Bandana. From my Girl Scout days, it can be used for so many things. i keep it tied around whatever bag i'm using for the day. Duct tape. I have used it!! Back in the old days, it was a quick fix for blisters. i've used it to tape together curtains that won't stay closed together, emergency hemming when I've ripped it. i have other things that I'll take that i'm not sure I'd call them univesally essential.
  14. Safe and fun travels Cynthia! Sherri - the Cocoa Beach FB group posted some video and photos from Ian. The Banana River flooded at places up over the walls and into yards. At the 520 bridge, it had a loose boat crash into it because there was amost no space between the water and the bottom of the bridge. Nothing major in Brevard, but power and still out in various places. Now I'm waiting to see how the grand-niece, her new hubby, the dogs, and other relatives living by the coast in South Carolina fare... OOTD: I'm going to work on the kitchen today, tossing out old stuff, big cleaning and scrubbing the floor. So, old joggers and old Tshirt will be the day's attire.
  15. Happy that you went and took the class!! Did any of the other iphone photography classes interest you? i'm doing the Architecture one in a week, then i want to do the editing inside of Camera class also. It really is cool that the classes are free. i took one years ago when i bought my first MacBook and it was for Microsoft users to learn Apple features and methods.
  16. I'm one of those who still reads the emergency cards in the seat back pocket in any aircraft i board. i make note of how many setbacks to the nearest exits in front and behind me. In a hotel, I make note of where the stairs are relative to my room. At my condo project, i pressed the HOA to make an emergency plan, complete with a meeting place for "muster" and why it's important for all owners to check in with me at the Front so I know who is in-house at any time. onboad a ship, I pay attention to the muster instructions and read any other information. people who do not pay attention bother me to no end. After the Concordia, I did change my little flashlight to a headlamp to I will have both hands free and still have a good, strong light.
  17. I forgot to mention: stanley Tucci is back again on CNN Sunday Oct 9. Rumors i've seen have Stanley visiting Puglia, Sardinia, Liguria, and Calabria. Get those Italian snacks and drinks ready!!! Sherri - I sure hope you and your place survived intact. Some places a little up A1A in Cocoa Beach (where my friend lives 1/2 time) had some wind damage - one place up on Minuteman lost part of their roof. I'm just so sorry for those people on the West coast - so much damage. now, i've heard that he may re-intensify and head toward South Carolina. i have part of family living down there now, between Beaufort and Charleston. Country folk could get their first taste of hurricane... I have to go to Home Depot and pick up a furnace filter and an intake filter - it's that time of year to replace and be prepared to fire up the furnace. It's only supposed to get up to 62 today, so OOTD will be jeans, long sleeve T, hi tops and a baseball hat.
  18. i didn't see grab & go places in Florence. The closest thing would be to duck into a grocery (Conad, Carrefour) and grab some of the pre-made items. On your way back to the train station, across the street there is a McDonalds if you are desperate.
  19. i did forget to mention one cool tool that the Apple instructor showed us. It's called a pocket tripod. he keeps it in his wallet. It folds up to make a little stand for your phone to use for a multitude of things. It will rotate the phone to the angle you want. It sure seems like a neat thing to have in the travel bag. Lois - yay for you to have the new laptop all set up and ready to go! It is nice to have help with that. I had a nice guy at the Apple store help me with the setup and data transfer with me iPhone back when I bought it. ootd: just sitting here in joggers and a long sleeve Tshirt - it only got down to 60 in the house last night. I have housework planned today so I'll probably switch to a short sleeve when I get going.
  20. i'm a hand-cranker too. In a pinch, I am pretty handy with the opener on my Swiss Army knife from my days as a Girl Scout and backpacker. I'm thinking maybe put a bottle or two of red wine in the ICE box - something to drink other than water! Or maybe a box of wine... 😸 OOTD: joggers and a sweatshirt again (59 in the house when I got up), moving to leggings and a Tshirt when it warms up. Now it's evening (I forgot to send the top part)... If you have an iPhone, find an Apple Store and take their "Photography on iPhone" class. I was surprised at how much I learned. Some cool features that aren't readily apparent, basic portrait, some settings to make things easier, and the hidden macro feature. I'm going to take all the ones available now. The "Framing Architecture" class is the next one i'm going to take since I love taking photos of pieces of buildings, churches, statues. then, i'll work on the editing class. there was an Athleta shop in the mall. Went in to actually see those Brooklyn pants. While I didn't like them, I could see them working in hot weather when traveling. I was also interested in looking at the Delancey Cargo pant. The Rustic Beige color is like a light brown and would work for wearing for work. The Foliage Orange is a really fun color but i'd be afraid to wear for work. Very comfortable pants. new OOTD: jeans and my lightweight white henley shirt, pink high tops. it was 92 down in the Valley this afternoon.
  21. That hotel is about a block or 2 from where I stayed. In between the two on Rue Jacob you'll find a Lauderee macaron shop, if you happen to need a little sweet. I found Breizah Cafe - I really loved their buckwheat crepes. it's across from le Comptoir restaurant - a nice bistro for dinner (no reservations, so you have to wait in line - i waited for 30 minutes). I walked all around that area into the night. A really fun and lively area. Enjoy!
  22. I've had 2 hometown Olympic experiences, and a few World Championships. yes, things will be all over the place. I haven't heard of many venue locations yet. Soccer will take up stadiums all over France most likely. I assume surfing will be at Biarritz, a well-known surf spot. Road cycling I bet will include the Paris portion of the Tour route. It's just a logistical problem all around.
  23. i had someone tell me to unplug electronics and TVs in case the power goes wonky - it can fry them. i was going to bring up the morphie battery packs, but i was typing too long, i have a bunch of solar-powered battery packs for camping - they also do good duty in an emergency. I keep them charged up and then they can be re-charged when the sun comes back. Works with my usb-powered collapsible lanterns that i have for ICE in my car and for camping. someone once told me that if my washing machine is a top-loader to fill it with ice and you can use it as a cooler.
  24. I know many of you plan way in advance for your cruises so I'd put this out there: The Olympic Summer Games are going to be in Paris and some surrounding areas July 26 - August 11, 2024. Based on previous experience with Olympics, the airport will be more of mess than usual, hotels are scooped up in big blocks for vendors and groups and the ones left will charge a LOT more than usual. If you were planning on some sightseeing, you may be detoured by some events on some days. It may be a good time to do a cruise that doesn't require Paris...
  25. I'd bring a reusable grocery bag. use it to take what you want to the pool. when you go ashore, take it to put purchases in instead of getting a single-use bag. you're going for utility, not fashion on this one. You can go with one of those little lightweight foldable from walmart/ikea/etsy. Or, go with a little social conscience and get a cloth bag from FEED. I use one from FEED myself year-round to carry miscellany and to go the farmers' markets.
