  1. Glacier Wind is great, but book soon because they do sell out.
  2. I used to do this on formal night when lobster was on the menu. Lobster was pretty disappointing by the time it got to my room.
  3. An advantage of the 6:30 a.m. bus vs. the 1:00 p.m. bus is you can arrive in Seward in time for a Kenai Fjords boat tour before boarding ship. Bummer about the cancelled train.
  4. Yakutania Point. Short, but it stretches your legs and ends with a nice view.

    Thanks. Missed it.

Do ships not dock at the Kelsey Dock? That appears to be a short walk to town. What am I missing?

Charging for a shuttle into town due to the docking location of the ship is just plain b.s. NCL should be ashamed.
  8. Watching pier runners at the moment they realize the ship is pulling away.
  9. If you must get close to an Alaskan brown bear, I'd suggest Katmai National Park when the salmon are running at Brooks Falls. You share a mile long path with the bears out to the Falls/viewing platforms. Never in a million years did I think I'd get that close to a brown bear with nothing between us. We're talking 20 feet. Bear didn't care about me. He/she just wanted salmon. Fortunately, visitors are required to listen to a 20 minute ranger talk when you arrive a Brooks telling you what to do if/when you have a close encounter. Rule No. 1: Don't run. Rule No. 2: If you can't avoid a bear on the path, just get off the path and give the bear lots of room.
  10. Growing up, all my traveling was to visit relatives, mostly in Eastern Oregon. Once I graduated and started working, I began to travel to Alaska and to parts of Europe (mostly on Rick Steves tours). My Dad never wanted to travel and my Mom wouldn't go without him. I did win a trip to the 1991 Super Bowl In Tampa and managed to convinced my Dad to come along.
  11. It has been a joy reading your trip report and I will be sorry to see it end. You are a candidate for sainthood for bringing your Dad along on your two-weeker and providing him with a wonderful experience. Enjoy your final day coming down Vancouver Island and your glorious morning arrival in Vancouver. I will be on the Spirit next month as a solo and will be thinking about how I wish I could have convinced my now-deceased parents to come along on one of my Alaska trips.
  12. Handsome Johnny. Named after the late John Prine. Vodka and (preferably, diet) ginger ale.
  13. For those of you who may have done both tours, is the longer tour worth it from the standpoint of wildlife viewing? I've done the 6 hour tour several times and have really enjoyed it. I'm considering doing the 8.5 hour trip when my cruise ends in Seward in late June.
  14. Agree, but I would try to stand at the back of the train car on the outdoor platform as much as possible. Having said that, be courteous to others who would also like to enjoy that view.
  15. I did a solo walk out to Yakutania Point a few years ago. I couldn't help but think I was being watched by bears!
  16. I'm heading to Alaska on a 7-day cruise in June. I'm planning to take my iphone, my Canon R5, an RF 24-240 (for walking around), an RF 16mm and an RF 100-400 for whale watching. I'm probably going to leave my beloved, but big and heavy, Tamron 150-600 at home. Any thoughts?
  17. Just shocking to me how much Anchorage hotels are charging. Everywhere is up, but Anchorage is outrageous. But, what are ya gonna do?
  18. Too bad its not down for a complete overhaul.
  19. Husky Stadium is the Mistake by the Lake. Easily avoidable.
  20. Given the nature of the closure (landslide), I doubt there will be incremental openings of the road past Mile 43. When the fix is in place, hopefully Summer 2024, the entire road will reopen.
