Smoking in Vibe on Getaway, Yay or Nay?

 Share

Recommended Posts

I've searched the boards and all I find is conflicting information.

One month, someone says "absolutely not."

Next month, "Yes, it is allowed."

I am aware of NCL's policy of no smoking in public areas with the exception of x,y and z, but it never mentions Vibe as far as I can see. Technically, it is a private area which would mean it is allowed.

Since I've found only conflicting info, I have a feeling the whole thing comes down to when you get to Vibe, the bartenders decide.

But if anyone has been to Vibe lately, particularly on The Getaway, could you add to the pile of yays or nays? My friend is down to get Vibe passes but she is a regular smoker and this will likely affect her (and by default, my) decision.

Thank you!

Breakaway and getaway have smoking at one side of the bar in the vibe . Escape has no smoking anywhere in the vibe. Again, people break rules all the time. The bartenders can either control it or turn a blind eye. Ive witnessed all out arguments from guests with opposing views. One time I even got my $ back and gave up my vibe pass because the smoke was so bad on the breakaway.

They also allow smoking in the forward part of the Havens sundeck (which is upwind from the Vibe). We found it especially disgusting when the havens would host a cocktail party on the sundeck and allowed a few inconsiderate people to puff away on the cigarettes in the middle of the party.

See, that's what my friend is afraid of. She doesn't want to start a brawl, but if the bartenders allow it, she's sparking up. But you got your money back because people were smoking and it was allowed on Breakaway so I wonder if it would work the other way....if it is allowed, people complain and she is uncomfortable, wonder if they'd refund us. I was in Vibe on the Escape, don't remember one way or the other but it is an open deck, obviously, so I'm surprised the smoke overwhelmed you. Thanks for the info though! MUCH appreciated.

The smoke is allowed on the side of the bar at the bar. I avoided that but people just freely smoked in lounge chairs at will. She ahould be fine as long as she enjoys her smoke at the bar. And they refunded my money after 3 days of stopping by desk and calling. The brawl was a riot as a lady started calling the people smoking at the bar out. She was out of line as the smokers were allowed to be there.

Thankfully was not allowed when we hd passes. I do not want to pay to get cancer form stupid people.

I'm not the smoker and would agree in an enclosed area. But it is an open deck. Lol Honestly, how do you avoid the smoke near the casino?

Was your experience on the Getaway?

I don't know the answer to your question but not following your logic here. Your balcony is a private area and you can't smoke on it- so, not being a "public area" has no bearing on if smoking it allowed. That being said, I wouldn't even call Vibe a private area since it's use belongs to the 100 or so people who buy passes so unless everyone out there agrees that smoking is ok (if it's in violation of Norwegian's policy - I dont' know that it is), there's no reason why your friend's wants would surpass the wants of everyone else who has a vibe pass.

I consider it private because not everyone can access it. Their whole policy of no smoking in "public" areas is kind of silly since the Waterfront is public as is the pool bar and smoking is allowed at both. And to your last point, conversely, everyone else's wants shouldn't dictate smokers' wants who also paid for access. If they're selling passes to both, then NCL should simply flat out state that it is or isn't allowed instead of creating potentially hostile situations amongst guests. I mean, even if it were majority rules, when is the vote taking place? If they allow smoking cause the smokers showed up first and the bartenders were fine with it, do they then recant that if non-smokers show up later and complain?

I dunno.

You're confusing private with exclusive or limited access. It is considered a public area but NCL does make exceptions in some public areas.

It's not a democracy. NCL makes the rules (no matter how inconsistent) and NCL enforces the rules (no matter how inconsistent the enforcement is).

Non-smokers shouldn't enforce their "rules" if smoking is allowed in an area.

Smokers shouldn't enforce their "rules" if smoking is not allowed in an area.

I agree that NCL should be specific with each area but people will interpret the rules how they see fit for any area that isn't specifically mentioned.

I agree but people who abide by the rules shouldn't feel intimidated by those who don't (true for both sides).

There shouldn't be any arguing from either side (as mentioned in a previous post) or anyone trying to interpret NCL's rules as to what is or isn't private.

I guarantee you NCL has a policy about it. They have designated smoking areas in public areas (casino, deck areas), so they either do or they don't in the vibe. Now if a bartender chooses not to enforce the policy is another issue. But if the policy is no smoking and someone is smoking I would request the bartender enforce the policy and if they didn't would request security respond. If the policy is to allow smoking in the bar area then I would have no basis to request otherwise (though that would certainly keep me from purchasing a vibe pass).

The wants of passengers for smoking or no smoking is irrelevant. On the jade the Bali hai bar is a designated smoking area. I enjoyed the bar but unfortunately had to avoid it due to the smoking. Life goes on, they are allowed to be there so I can find somewhere else to go. On the same page I would be upset if someone was smoking outside of a designated smoking area.

I've never seen a non-smoker go into the smoking areas and start putting out cigarettes! :)

Neither have I but if "a lady started calling the people smoking at the bar out. She was out of line as the smokers were allowed to be there.", then the lady would be wrong.

That si not what defines a public area. Public areas are areas that are NOT crew only.

So my balcony is a public area?

It really doesn't matter. It is going to come down to if people complain and my friend gets the smoking thing in current society and is not one to offend. She'd apologize and put it out if reasonably approached. We just dnt want to waste a perfectly nice morning in Miami with all that trying to get Vibe passes entails if she can't also fully enjoy her time there as well.

But said rules are seemingly not applied with any consistency. I'm Switzerland here. Smoking, non-smoking whatever. But clarity and enforcement one way or the other would be fantastic so both the pro and the anti smoking cruisers could make an informed decision.

IMO there's really no need for your friend to be in a position for someone to ask her to stop smoking. Every NCL ship has designated smoking areas. Anything that is not a designated smoking area is "non-smoking". Best thing to do when you go to guest services to purchase your vibe pass is to ask if there are any designated smoking areas in the Vibe. If there are, great, smoke away. If not, she can choose whether or not it's worth having the pass and going to a different deck or different side of the ship to smoke.

Yup. I think she's agreeing to this so we will just roll with it and see what happens. I really no longer go by what any of these NCL employees tell me because I have been told crazy, crazy stuff. For example, you can buy Vibe passes in advance and they sell 400 of them per cruise. But it's fine. We're just going to try and get them and if they say no, they say no and we go from there.

I was on Getaway in February and I was at Vibe every day. They allowed smoking at one corner of the bar. Not many people smoked though, only 2 or 3 if I recall. Did not even noticed plus it's pretty windy up there.

Smokers are definitely the minority these days which is a good thing.

I was in Vibe on the Escape in November and could not believe how windy it was. Do you think it's a design thing or just certain times of year?
