i would like to play blackjack on my upcoming cruise. i am a player that uses common sense. i dont necessarily play every hand by the book. is a cruise sip casino a little friendlier or vegas like where if you hit when you shouldn't youll get dirty looks and comments. one time in alantic city a guy at the table put 200 down on a hand and i wasn't sure to hit or not so i asked the player with the 200 bet if he wanted me to or not. he replied its up to me. anyhow are the people real serious generally or is it more relaxed on ship ?

Thats the reason why I stopped playin bj. Didnt like the group mentality with my money, so i moved to craps. I would imagine with all the different types of people on a cruise you might get a few bj veterans that might give you a look or two. It wouldnt think it would matter that much at the $5 tables though

I would not want to be rude, but I would have a hard time advising someone how to play their hand since the "wrong advice" would be my fault.

The atmosphere in the ship's casino is definitely more casual but you still run into the power players that take the games very seriously. Either way, play the way you want and have fun.

If you are concerned about how others perceive your play affecting them, take a seat on the left side of the table, but not necessarily the last seat. Playing after someone has less perceivable impact on their hand since you didn't "take their card". (If you take it, its not theirs, its yours so don't give in to that mentality.) The last seat is the last chance to bust the dealer and some will think you could have saved everyone by taking, or not taking, that last card.

In real life your play has no affect on their ability to play their hand. The cards are random and "bad" play will help just as many times as it hurts.

I try to play the odds that are in my favor. Even if it is $5.00

Hitting when I have 16 and the dealer shows 7 is hard to do but the odds are in your favor.

My last cruise some folks were getting upset by others not using basic strategy.

You do not want to be the one who costs the table money.

Everytime the ship comes to it's home port everyone gets off and an all new group gets on.

Basically there will always be people who would prefer that you play "sane". Splitting tens would probably get a reaction from.

However you need not be concerned about that. Play the way you want. The real players wont be at the $5 table anyway.

The one time I played blackjack on a cruise was the first time I had ever played blackjack in a casino. Unfortunately, there was a guy at the table who was one of those that gave dirty looks if you hit/didn't hit when he thought you should not be/should be hitting. Kind of ruined my experience, especially since it was the cheap table :(

I only play BJ. On the ships you have to play more "by the book". In vegas I play with my gut. With a 5 card shoe you can get a feel for how many high cards and low cards are out and play accordingly. On the ships they use the continuous shuffle machine. So you have no idea what the percentage is on what the next card could be. The first time I played on a ship I was doing pretty bad at first, but a veteran cruiser told to play by the book and I started doing better then he told me if things start to turn for the worse, play an extra hand to break up the cards. It worked, I ended up winning money before the cruise was over. There are still the die hards that will give you the stink eye if you play when they think you shouldn't have or if they think you took their card. I ignore them. I am there to have fun. Not to try to make them money.

At the $5 table most players are there to have fun. I would say sit at first base rather than 3rd, so other players are making decisions after you.

If you do things like split 10's you might hear some groans.

The cards have no memory so you taking a hit on the current hand can easily cause next hand to be favorable to the player and bad for the house. People just seem to remember the bad moves, not if that move totally changed the cards and let to a hot streak.

Just go and have fun.

As others have said play the way you want. I do play a good bit of blackjack and am guilty of sighing or going "wow" when someone plays other than by the book so to speak... having said that I've been known to double down on 12. If you play at the $5 table ignore the frowners and play the way you want. If you get up to the $100 tables again play the way you want, it's your money. $25 tables maybe watch for a bit...

I am experienced BJ player and I usually just avoid it altogether on the ships. I dont like the shoe, prefer single/double deck and I see a lot of players taking cards to "get 21", even when the dealer has a bust card. JMO.

TO me it's a gut thing... the odds are to hit but I don't always go that way.

Also I would just ask that's how u learn ...yes u will lose some hands but u will learn to play the right way ..what I mean is the best odds for you..that's how I learned ...u will know who knows how to play the right way at the table and ask them what should I do cuz I don't want to make the whole table lose on a bad play

Sooo wrong.

I disagree with you. No matter how one guy plays, it is still 50/50 as to whether it helps or hurts your hand.

I have been playing blackjack for decades and don't see how somebody else's stupid (or smart) plays have hurt or help either way. It is still quite random.

If you stay on 16 with the dealer showing a 7, you will get nasty looks from the other players.

I could care less what the other players think.

I have gotten dirty looks from other players when I have stood on a 16 when the dealer's face card was a 6 or lower. They even complained to the dealer that I was supposed to hit on anything less than a 17.

I play craps too on the don't line - trust me I get more than just looks when I do that.

Im not there to please anybody else playing.

i dont see why i would get dirty looks. theres a high chance of me busting by taking a hit there. why not stick and hope the dealer busts.
