vintagebabe Posted August 25, 2010 #1 Share Posted August 25, 2010 I haven't checked the posts for several months, so pardon me if this question is redundant! We cruised October 2009 on the Quest and the coffee was absolutely terrible!! Pondering booking for next year, and wondering if there has been any improvement in that area. I like rich, dark french roast type coffee-not diry water.
suec12 Posted August 25, 2010 #2 Share Posted August 25, 2010 You can always get some at the Mosiac? cafe - I thought it was great - I would just get the regular daily special but there were cappacino's and what-not available as well. I would get a good sized cup every morning and take it up on deck and read. No charge for most items, only for those with liquor shots I think. I never tried the coffee in the dining room. I like rich, dark french roast type coffee-not diry water. Went on a July 2010 cruise. The coffee is still poor even though they changed the machines in the buffet, so if you wanted the buffett coffee you had to add expresso to get taste. Dining room coffee also needs work. Serving temps are uneven and tend towars tepid. Mosiac is excellent though
maryann ns Posted August 25, 2010 #4 Share Posted August 25, 2010 The trick is to ask for espresso in the MDR and the staff go down to the staff dining room where there is a good machine.

I am going again soon on Quest, so I will be sure to report back. They say the coffee is good in the cafe - Cova or whatever it's called...I forget. So, we'll see. I may have to buy those Starbuck's Via things to take with me.

I just wanted to let you know that I make an iced latte each morning using the VIA Try the Medium and Bold because there is a BIG difference I put one packet in with 8oz of milk into a shaker, shake well and then pour over ice. Sometimes I add a little syrup or international delight. I actually like it BETTER than going into my local Starbucks So, you could bring the VIA with you and ask the bartender to mix it in a cocktail shaker if you want the iced version.. I don't really drink it straight up, but I watched the taste test several times when it 1st came out and many people couldn't identify which one was the VIA K. vintagebabe Posted August 26, 2010 Author #7 Share Posted August 26, 2010 Gosh, sounds like nothing has changed since our 10/2009 cruise. How can you get coffee so wrong? Not a deal breaker, but nothing like a strong, hot cup of coffee in the morning!!

schmidlapp Posted August 27, 2010 #9 Share Posted August 27, 2010 We're on the "boat" or should I say ship with the bad bad bad coffee. The only solution we had was to tolerate the morning coffee, room service seemed better than windows cafe. I tried a number of different concoctions in windows with a shot of expresso with half a late and half americano, but still barely drinkable. We would get off the ship right away on port days and find a good coffee shop. In the evening, Our good friend Angelburt the casino bartender extrordinare, always found me a decent coffee to go with my after dinner Drambuie. Angelburt we'll see you in 3 weeks.... Graciesea Posted August 27, 2010 #12 Share Posted August 27, 2010 It's considered a fire hazard just like an iron. We've traveled with a French Press coffee maker and our Starbucks on past cruises...need that good strong coffee in the morning. Others have said that the Mosiac cafe had decent coffee. Does anyone know what time the Mosiac opens in the morning or should we plan on bringing our press along?:o

MightyQuinn Posted August 27, 2010 #16 Share Posted August 27, 2010 So how was the coffee in the Mosiac? Was it better than what is offered in Windows Cafe from the machines? It's now free, right? The coffee bar on Journey was called Cova Café in April/10 (maybe it's now Mosiac) & the specialty coffees were wonderful. Cappuccino, espresso & lattes were all complimentary while other concoctions (usually with booze) were additional charge. Espresso con panna was divine & very addictive! takemewithyou Posted August 27, 2010 #18 Share Posted August 27, 2010 Thank you Mighty Quinn and SFL for the replies. Mighty Quinn: As a basis of comparison.......Is the specialty coffee as good as HAL's Exploration Cafe? If so, then I'm good! :) Just as an aside.....I tried the specialty coffee in the Cova on Azamara in Dec 2009 and couldn't drink it - it was horrible (so strong and thick).....worse than what was upstairs in Windows, so I hoping for a big change. suec12 Posted August 27, 2010 #19 Share Posted August 27, 2010 and besides the coffees, which you can get to go if you want, they also have very nice little snackies all day long - nice sized when you just need a little munchie to hold you til the next main meal. I was impressed with alot of "little things" on Azamara and this was definately a nice little extra.

The specialty coffee menu was larger & more interesting on Azamara. Plus they had a wider assortment of sweet & savory treats. You should be good to go! :):)
takemewithyou Posted August 27, 2010 #21 Share Posted August 27, 2010 Thanks! Maybe I can get my morning coffee there in the morning. I did love those snacks in the cafe - they had wonderful little sandwiches and pastries. Last cruise, I just resorted to drinking tea (a habit from my single days :o). They have some wonderful teas on Azamara and I would get my own little pot of tea and sometimes have my own little lunch right there while reading a book. Great little spot and very convenient to stop by there after coming back from ports. DH loved the poolside grill and got lots of burgers and fries. :p
mare s. Posted August 28, 2010 #22 Share Posted August 28, 2010 I went into detail on the coffee situation on another thread, but I must say that this is still an issue. Coffee in Mosaic was probably the best on board, but in the dining rooms it was awful most nights...sour and off-tasting. Espressos were likewise dreadful. I think it's a combination of poor quality coffee, inadequate cleaning of the coffee machines, and inexperienced personnel making the coffee. We certainly made staff aware of the situation...maybe it will help.
nuneham Posted August 29, 2010 #23 Share Posted August 29, 2010 On the same cruise as Mare and agree entirely. We were bemused by the fact that staff could get better espresso from their machine than the one in the MDR. The 'default' tea is also poor - you need to specify Twinings. mare s. Posted August 29, 2010 #24 Share Posted August 29, 2010 Yes, forgot to mention the tea! I complained about that too. Did get Twinings a couple of times, but I think they can do even better than that. But tea was better than the coffee!
wntgoislnds Posted August 30, 2010 #25 Share Posted August 30, 2010 I've brought my coffee maker on 10 cruises. I think I'm going to try to do so again. I really like a good cup as soon as we wake up without having to get dressed and walk anywhere or wait for it to come. I have never created a fire hazard because I always unplug. I also bring small plastic bags to throw the used filters and grounds away so I don't make a mess.
