lisiamc Posted November 8, 2017 #1 Share Posted November 8, 2017 There has been a spate of severe storms over the past few days, and they have caused flooding and landslides along the Amalfi coast. Positano is one of the towns affected. There’s a story and photos here. euro cruiser Posted November 8, 2017 #3 Share Posted November 8, 2017 Sad headline in the Naples newspaper Il Mattino today, "Positano on her knees": https://www.ilmattino.it/salerno/maltempo_a_positano-3352313.html This article from a couple of days ago has a picture so you can see what they are dealing with. The fires from the summer are having an impact, fewer trees and root systems in place to hold the earth leads to landslides in heavy rain ... and sadly those fires were arson, not natural. https://www.ilmattino.it/salerno/fango_detriti_flagellano_positano_paura_vallone_mulini-3349297.html

Rare Hlitner Posted November 8, 2017 #5 Share Posted November 8, 2017 A few years ago we spent a week in the nearby town of Praiano and noticed several fires burning in the hills (some above Positano). We asked the hotel owner about the fires and he explained that the Italian government simply lets them burn themselves out....but not before they destroy a lot of the foliage that holds the hills together. Ground access to the fires is very difficult to impossible and I guess the government does not want to spend the big Euros to bring in helicopters to air drop water. And then there are the ecologists who think that its all nature and man should not interfere (we have seen some of this in our own country).
