Poker tournaments...OOPS

So I am not a poker player and as such I don't know anything about the procedures, etc. on the Norwegian ships but someone I will be traveling with is. So I got this idea to call CAS to see which ships are going to have tournaments to perhaps plan on sailing on one that will be having one. Boy was I embarrassed!! Didn't know you have to be INVITED based on your past play and standing. Oh well live and learn. Just curious just how much would you have to have played to even qualify for this?

Can’t answer your question. But, I’ve played plenty of cash games on NCL Ships. But, you need to have enough people willing to play a cash game. And, the casino manager has to support those games with a table and dealers.

Here... https://www.ncl.com/pokerchallenge

This is a link to info on NCL’s annual poker tournament. They will have satellite tournaments on cruises leading up to the cruise above. Win a satellite, you win a free room and entry into the $350,000 main event. Or you can book your own room and pay to enter. Last year the entry fee was $1100.

Hope this helps.

Do all NCL ships have real chips/cards tables? I've mostly cruised on Carnival and they have electronic tables. Thanks!

The Epic does. And I’m going to assume that since NCL wants your experience to be consistent fleet wide, they all do.

There are also electronic tables on the Epic.

Only been on Epic and the “Away” ships (so far). All had chips to play in a cash game.

That answer from CAS is not accurate. All of the NCL ships (except the Hawaii based POA) run various poker tournaments from my experience.

A $100 rebuy/add-on tournaments which are part of the satellites to win a cruise (for two) and a seat into the annual Poker Challenge Main Event (11/11/18 on the Escape this year) as long as the minimum total is reached from all entrants ($2,900 I believe is the new minimum, was $2,800 in 2017). If the minimum is not reached, the tournament become a winner take all cash tournament. If the prize pool exceeds the minimum to qualify for the Poker Challenge, that excess cash goes to the winner as well.

$80 cash tournament. These will run if they get a minimum of 6-7 players signed up. Usually pay the top 3 places.

A $275 one table tournament if 10 players sign up, with the winner getting the cruise (for two) and seat into the annual Poker Challenge.

FYI - the winner of the cruise for two and seat in the Poker Challenge is required to pay a fee of $20pp per night (normal NCL CAS fee = $140pp) and the taxes and fees ($218pp for the Escape cruise). You can chose any perks or special deals currently being offered at the time you book. You may transfer/sell the cruise/entry as well.

NCL has real chips/cards and play $2-5 No Limit Texas Holdem. Rake is high, 10% up to $25 per pot.

No electronic poker tables on any NCL ship I've been on (Breakaway, Epic, Jade, Gem). Carnival and Princess have the PokerPro electronic tables, but NCL, Celebrity, RCCL have live dealers and real chips/cards.

Ironworker, are you saying there were electronic poker tables on the Epic? Or are you speaking of slot/video poker machines? I was on the Epic in December 2017 and no electronic texas holdem poker tables then.

True about the rake in the cash games. But, depending on dealer, they’d throw in a free hand occasionally.

On the Getaway, we had the same group every night. Lots of observers, but the the same players.

$2-$5 No Limit was what we played. Don’t recall seeing any video hold’em machines.

Thanks for the clarification. I was indeed talking about the PokerPro tables. Sorry if I caused any confusion thinking I meant Video Poker.

Oh wow. I didn’t know that.

Do you know why they don’t have a casino? Is it because they don’t port outside of the United States?

The POA has several quirks due to it being a US flagged ship. That is one of them along with they can't give away the UBP as a perk or booze for OS and DOS rooms (they sub those with wine or champagne).
