Need good hotel for Winchester England

Recommended Posts

Mercure Winchester Wessex was recommended from a past passenger.

We are staying there for 2 night pre cruise. We are taking the National Express Coach from LHR to Winchester then a taxi to the hotel and a car service to the ship.

We took the package that gives us a tea, dinner, breakfast and tickets to the cathedral.

This is the Winchester part of my cruise review:

Winchester was a lovely choice for a pre-cruise visit. Smiths for Airports was right on time at our meeting place in Heathrow and whisked us off to the fairly modern Winchester Hotel. After a nap in our US-size king bed we walked into town to attend Choral Evensong at the Cathedral. http://www.winchester-cathedral.org.uk/ The Manchester attack had occurred the previous evening so it was good to pray in that glorious place. The first night’s dinner was part of the hotel’s Heritage package and we chose freshly prepared Shepherd’s Pie to start our British adventure; a breakfast buffet was also included and had a wide range of foods. The next morning we took the bus into town to find the old city mill which operates at 11:00 am. We then walked along the river-side to the cathedral. When we arrived a tour of the crypt was about to begin so we quickly got tickets and followed the guide down under the cathedral. Afterwards we wandered around the main area to find Jane Austen’s grave stone which is in the cathedral floor and then ate lunch in the refectory. We still had places to explore and headed uphill to visit the Great Hall and then back to our hotel. That evening we met cousins for an excellent dinner using locally sourced foods at Chesil Rectory. Thankfully they picked us up as I don’t think my legs could have gone much further. The next morning we packed, picked up the wine for our cabin from the nearby Co-Op store, and were promptly picked up by Smiths for our ride to Southampton.

I am now staying at the Mecure Winchester Hotel for 2 nights.

We took the National Express coach from LHR to Winchester. We were dropped on Broadway High St. Since we did not know where or how to get to the hotel, we asked at the Tourist Information office a few minutes walk from the stop. The lady came out and walked us to the corner of Colerbrook St (1 building away) and pointed down the street to the hotel.

Our twin room is on a floor between floors so no elevator, they carried our luggage up. There is an elevator but not for our room. The room is roomy, it does not have AC but has a table fan.

The hotel is great for walking to the Cathedral, restaurants, stores, regular buses. The Tourist Information Office offered a 1 1/2 hour walking tour of the lower level of Winchester for £5/pp.

We took the Heritage Package that included breakfast, a tea, dinner, tickets to the Cathedral. We had the tea last night, 4 scones, 3 whole sandwiches ,a plate of various desserts.

I would recommend it.

The Winchester Hotel, mentioned by Alaskanb is an attractive & laid-back mid-priced hotel about 15 mins on foot from the cathedral & city centre. Very popular.

Mercure Wessex is much more convenient - Usain Bolt could get from there to the cathedral in under 9.58 seconds :)IMHO quite an ugly modern facade though I've never been inside, but one of the best-located hotel in the city.

Hotel du Vin is 100 yards from the pedestrianized High Street, and about a 3 minute walk from the cathedral. It's a much more expensive and exclusive hotel but not such good value for the OP - the rate includes free parking whereas the few other hotels with parking usually charge £15 per day.

It fronts one of the main roads into the city centre, with constant city traffic and an almost-constant line of traffic waiting for the traffic lights. I don't know the impact on rooms at the front, but I'd be inclined to ask for a room at the back. And there's a very pleasant and surprisingly tranquil sitting-out courtyard at the back.

Consider also the Old Vine, in the same price range of Hotel du Vin. It's right in the historic heart of the city. In essence it's "rooms above a pub" - but that description doesn't do the place justice, it's more a boutique hotel. Extremely spacious rooms, some quite quirky and interesting. Good & sensibly-priced food too, though the location means its usually busy so do book a table on arrival if you want to eat there.

Has anyone stayed at the MacDonald hotel at Botley Park. Not too sure where it is except 5 miles from Southampton,

Have attended a few functions, but never stayed there.

Big new housing estate being built at the back but unlikely to affect the place.

It's actually about 9 miles to the port, but worth checking whether they offer cruise-long parking and/or transfers.

A tolerably decent place, but not at all convenient if you don't have a car - it's in countryside without even a pub in walking distance. So no car more-or-less means you're confined-to-barracks and the usual heavy 4-star hotel prices for drinks etc.

With a car (or taxi) it's a 5 min drive to the mega-stores of Hedge End in Tollbar Way, or 5 mins in the other direction to the village of Botley. Decent selection of restaurants & pubs within a 5 to 10 min drive.

With a car the relatively inconvenient location is no big deal, and well worth it for its peaceful location.

JB :)
