Do you need to have the internet package to use this?

No. This is independent of the internet packages. Be sure your device is on airplane mode with wifi turned on. Unless you have logged into the internet system you will not be "on" the internet. We found Princess at Sea super handy. Can't wait to use it again. Have a great cruise!

Very handy to use, for keeping in touch with others and also to check your onboard account and the electronic version of the patter.

For messaging, though, keep in mind that at the present time, it does not let you know if you have a message. You have to go in to your messages and check to see. Hopefully Princess will upgrade it with a little icon or ping to let you know.
