BREAKAWAY Restaurants

is any complimentary restaurant better than another or do they all serve the same food each day.

Manhattan Room, Taste, Savor have similar menus. There are 10 different menus that rotate, so there are specials of the day (appetizers, entrees, desserts) along with standard offerings the restaurants.

Shanghai Noodle Bar has Asian foods.

O'Shehans has great continental foods, with a special each night (open 24/7 for all of your snacking needs)

Garden Cafe Buffet has a wide variety of international foods. They also have nightly specials.

Shanghai is near the casino and it is complimentary. :) The buffet is open until 9/10 but there is also a late night buffet of lots of snacks, hot dogs, desserts, etc from 9-11 ish. :)

Each night I would pick my daughter up from Splash Academy around 10-10:30pm and there was always something she would want to eat. They had most of the buffet closed down by then but still plenty to offer. I'm not sure how late they kept it open until, but they always had burgers, dogs, chicken fingers, fries, pizza, chips, and ice cream then. Plus a lot of other stuff she wasn't interested in.

Just got off Breakaway on Sunday. The menu is the same but the decor is different. Manhattan Room is about twice as big as the others, has live music and people seemed to dress up a little more. Was also the busiest. At the entrance there are two hostess desks. If you have a reservation go straight the second one and they'll seat you right away. Otherwise you go to the first one and for us there was typically a 20-30 minute wait for a table. They give you a pager and you can go and sit at a bar or whatever while you wait.

Taste and Savour are smaller with different colour schemes. They each have one hostess desk and there's was rarely a line-up. We liked having the variety and choice of where to eat.

We were actually very pleased with the quality and selection of food in the MDR's. Have cruised Celebrity, Princess and Disney before and found NCL's food to be very comparable. In fact, my wife is vegetarian and found the food, especially the salads, to be the best she has experienced at sea.

How far in advance do you have to make reservations for the MDR?

You can book online once you're 90 days out (100 for Haven guests). It seems they have limited bookings available prior to sail date then when you're at the Port you can log into iConcierge and there's more availability. Generally, I don't consider it necessary to pre-book MDR's as the wait time was minimal and it allows you to have flexibility over when you eat.

Different story though for specialty restaurants .....

The only "non-specialty" restaurant that I made a reservation for was The Manhattan Room, as I specifically wanted to hear the band. I also tried to figure out the time that the "Burn the Floor" dancers would be doing their routine there. I can't remember exactly how I worked it out, but I believe I saw dailies that someone had posted and made sure I didn't book a time when the show was actually going on in the theater.

The band ended up being only so-so, definitely better than no music, but the dancers were amazing! The preview-routine was much more than I had anticipated and we really enjoyed it, and the full show that we saw later during the trip. Try to get a table near the dance floor.

We really enjoyed the food as well!
