Does it make more sense to bring euros with us, for exchange in Cuba? This would eliminate the 10% penalty we would encounter with US dollars, correct? Or with the exchange rate being what it is, are we still better off dealing with dollars exchanged into cuc

Yes, there is a penalty for American $. We brought Canadian. We were also able to use American $ for some purchases last May.

If you can buy CAN $ or Euros with no fees from your bank, you'll save a few dollars. If you're only going to exchange a couple of hundred and have fees attached, it's generally not worth the trouble.

1 US $ = 1 CUC, minus 10% penalty and 3% conversion fee.

You end up with 87 CUC and a wee bit of change per $100 US. And just so you are not surprised, there is a 3CUC denomination.

We took Euros. If all my math is correct, I came out $25 ahead. On the way out, they don't ask what currency you want, you get US dollars. There is no 10% tax going from CUC to US, though.

US$800. And I still came back with US$180 after paying for our tour, tips, rums, lunch, and few drinks along the way!
