Smoking Policy

I am loving the history lessons. Sir Winston had a wonderful way with words that always brings a smile to my face. :) I hope he's sitting on a lounge chair in heaven with a cigar and cognac while trading barbs with friends. He deserves it.

Speaking metaphorically, of course, I most certainly believe that he is. :)

so you are like stalking me or something? Yick.

Stalking?? Hardly! I believe this is the first response I've made to you although I find many of your remarks to posters very irritating (and rude).

If anybody lurks it's probably you as you always seem to know where there are quarrels and arguements on other boards which you are very quick to point out on this board. I don't know whether you join in or not because I don't lurk!

Perhaps you would be in the right, but would you really want to engage him on this matter?

Famously, at a dinner party a lady admonished Churchill, "You, Sir, are drunk"

To which he replied, "Yes, Madame, and you are ugly. But in the morning I will be sobre, and you will still be ugly".

And he stole that line from a WC Fields movie.....;)

I would though have a cigar with either one of them....:D

What is worse than cigarette smoke? We all know what it is - that overwhelming scent that fogs up the room or elevator and leaves everyone gagging. Your throat becomes coated with the sickly sweet scent, and your nose and eyes burn. The thickness of the air makes it difficult to think straight. Your mind begins to react from the stench, and you can't think of anything else besides exiting the area to fresh or even smoke-filled air. What is worse than cigarette smoke? It's the person who wears too much perfume or too much cologne.

The cruise lines should designate an area for "perfuming"!

I hope that Sir Winston could find a small part, somewhere in Heaven, where he is going to be able to relax and have his favourite cigar, without "disturbing" anyone else. I also hope that in heaven there is not such a strict "no smoking policy"...

We just left two weeks on Eurodam and the hallway on Rotterdam deck, portside, STUNK the whole second week. The first week was not so bad.

It was not tolerable.

We had smokers on both sides of us and it was miserable.

There is no adequate defense to disturbing other people so severely and impacting our enjoyment of our veranda IMO

We have been bothered in the past but never so much as last week.

It will only get worse if nothing is done IMO

Diversion comments re: perfume just don't measure up. I find fewer and fewer folks use scent these days. I hardly noticed any in two weeks out and about all over the ship. It was a non-issue. Smoking was disgusting and causing great discomfort and medical reactions.

S7S posts about excessive smoking and smoke stench near her stateroom and the response is another diversion comment. Guess that shows the lack of consideration some smokers have for other passengers.

I realize that I'm skating on thin ice here, but..... Many posters here have been complaining about smoking on HAL for years.

HAL has not changed it's policies.

Smokers enjoy HAL.

Perhaps it's time for the anti-smokers to hit the road?

I have no doubt in my mind that HAL's marketing department has juggled the numbers. I doubt they're going to change their policies any time soon. (Much to the dismay of CC's "elite")

Dear Sail ... I"m so very sorry to read that this was the case on your recent Eurodam cruise. I gather from your post that the smoke issue was also a problem on your verandah. That's VERY unfortunate. Please know that you have my sympathies. I trust that you outlined the impact this had on your cruise in your review and in the on-board smoking survey. They did have a survey, correct?

Zappa Fan, I don't know when you last cruised on HAL, but beginning in 2009 the Line began restricting smoking in many of its lounges. For instance, on the Ryndam and Amsterdam in May of 2009, on the Rotterdam this past November, and aboard the Zaandam in January/February of this year, smoking in public areas was restricted to:

1. The Crows Nest: the area being the bar.

2. The Casino (most nights) and the Sports bar.

3. The outside aft deck on the starboard side.

4. The promenade

Smoking has been eliminated from the Ocean Bar, from the Explorer's Lounge, and from the port side area of the Crows Nest. These restrictions have meant that smokers have had to retreat to their cabins more in order to smoke, and the result may well be greater amounts of smoke in the corridors outside the cabins of smokers. That's VERY unfortunate.

I sympathize with people, like Sail, who have a strong sensitivity to smoke: while I have a decent tolerance factor for smoke, prolonged exposure to my mother smoking in our shared cabin last year caused me to suffer from a severe sinusitis. At the same time I also sympathize with smokers, for whom the current restrictions inhibit the enjoyment of their cruise. I want to be able to continue cruising with my mother, but if HAL bans smoking aboard its ships she will have to quit cruising (or quit smoking). i wish there were perfect answers for everybody, but I'm not sure such can be found with this issue.

Unfortunately, there is no right answer for everyone. We have traveled on Oceania twice, but we couldn't afford a balcony suite. No smoke problems.

We have had balconies on RCCL, Carnival, and HAL. We have not been able to enjoy our balconies at all, ever. Chain smokers every cruise. Some chain smokers use excessive perfume. Guess they can't smell it.

We love HAL in spite of it all. We will simply book ocean view cabins from now on; no sense in spending more money for a balcony that we can't use.

Our next cruise is Azamara, with a balcony. Maybe one time we can enjoy it.

The cruise after that is with HAL, but an ocean view cabin. The weather will be chilly anyway.

I can tolerate the smell of cigarette smoke, but not constantly. On Carnival, the smoker on the balcony next store, flicked his live ashes onto our balcony and I got burned. Someone above, flicked his cigar ashes on my head. That's no fun for me.

I want to get along, but fair is fair.

Some people who smoke know what their rights are, if not, perhaps another cruise liner is for you.:)

Rather blase response to cruisers who have sailed with the company for over 20 years...... it isn't okay to blithly dismiss us in this manner.

Thank you for your understanding, Greg.

Yes. They still circulate the smoking survey but we dismissed some time ago that it might have any weight or meaning.

It has actually had an impact: firstly, in the restriction of smoking from many of the lounges where it was once allowed. Secondly, note that they are tracking who replies and how they reply with Mariner Numbers. Given the frequency at which you cruise, your response is certainly noted. Who knows? Changes occurred last year. It may be just a matter of time before further changes come. Mom mentioned the other day that if HAL changes their smoking policy to bar it on the ship altogether, she would just have to go ahead a quit. I pray she does ... for many reasons. However, I also love and support her no matter what her decision ... and I do want to keep cruising with her.

Bless you both.

If you understand the corporate system in the World today, you might possibly see that bottom line.. I don't think many Global companies care.. just my opinion.

There are different options for travel, and loyalty might not matter.. just another guess..

Nothing like a reverend on a cruise ship and a Mom who smokes, with back up, for a good story.. very entertaining..:)

You have choices, try them for itinerary, planes, trains, and automobiles.;

jmho...

Please note that those who suffer from allergies as I do, do not use any perfume or scented products. Cigarette smoke exacerbates our allergic reactions. I don't see the relevance of this comment. And I sneeze from too much scent.

DW has a history of asthma and recurrent bronchitis; she is verrrrrrrrrry sensitive to smoke. We cruised on HAL last May (7 days to Alaska out of Seattle). We had a verandah cabin with a smoker next door. Never had the slightest problem. So far as we're concerned, it's a tempest in a teapot. (But I agree that the entertainment value is high!)
