Smoking Policy

Why is that?

Jimmy does not smoke, and he does not play in an area with smoke.

If someone had mistakenly walked into his lounge with a lit cigarette, or taken out a ciggy while in there, Jimmy would have informed them that the Piano Bar is a non-smoking area, and invited them to enjoy their ciggy in the Casino Bar next door.

The Piano Bar on the E-dam has been a non-smoking venue from the day the ship was introduced. Jimmy was the entertainer there on that inaugural cruise, and I spent every evening there from the end of dinner 'til closing.

I must have been mistaken about the policy, those of you who have been with HAL more than my 32 days in 12 months know much more than I do.

However, I am very clear there was cigarette smoking, not fake cigarettes around the Piano on the TA during the 18 day cruise. Yes it is true it is so close to the Casino I couldn't have been there much even if it was non smoking. And there were non smoking nights, probably the night they stopped smoking in the casino.

I made an off hand remark about what I thought was policy only because I saw smoking there and discussed it with the Piano Man. No I didn't say, "get those smokers out of there". We told him we thought he was talented and we wanted him to know we would have been in there except for my asthma.

DH thinks the Captain made an exception for the cruise because of requests. But we are not sure. I posted a LIve From thread during that time, but it was boring and I couldn't bring myself to reread it. I do remember that I wanted to keep my asthma issues down to the emergencies and not bore everyone with it but also let you know in case it was important for others. It could be that I didn't discuss the Piano conversation, because we never went in, only stood around the corner listening. I assumed all the smoking going on in there was allowed, or at the discretion of the Captain. It had not occured to me it was supposed to be non smoking.

I am not mistaken about the smoking but clearly I am about the policy.

Ovef there, on Carnival, someone started a thread suggesting that the cruiseline should tax their ciggies. You know, make it like $95.00 per carton. It's pretty funny. Little bit of brouhaha.

Not like that here.:)

Or people that smoke should pay a surcharge for the cruise.

Only kidding...calm down everyone......:D

In a big cruise ship, there are a only a few-limited places inside, that you can smoke! So, please, let the people who like smoking to enjoy their cruise! If you don't like smoke of their cigarettes, you have a whole ship to enjoy! If Winston Churchill was travelling with you, would you tell him "your cigar bother me"?

"If Winston Churchill was travelling with you, would you tell him "your cigar bother me"?"

Yes.

Would the exchange go something like this? "It is a great honor to meet you, Sir, and I want to thank you for the leadership and service you gave to humanity during very hard times. However, your cigar smoke, which I realize is a pleasure for you, is extremely bothersome to me so I would appreciate it if you would extinguish it in order to please me."

Yes.

Perhaps you would be in the right, but would you really want to engage him on this matter?

Famously, at a dinner party a lady admonished Churchill, "You, Sir, are drunk"

To which he replied, "Yes, Madame, and you are ugly. But in the morning I will be sobre, and you will still be ugly".

so you are like stalking me or something? Yick.

Actually, it's really easy to get a read on a person's posting characteristics, if all one does is 'lurk'....no need to stalk! It's easy to become familiar with another's posting style, or you might predict how a poster might respond, or post, about a certain subject, because they ALWAYS respond, to every post, on every subject, all with a particular style, or opinion. I'm certain we all know how Usha feels about smoking, right? There are lots of lurkers out there, the majority overwhelmingly harmless:):) (at least I'm betting they are;))

One needn't 'stalk' in order to get a sense of someone. Whether that 'sense' is accurate or not, is another matter. Some people have the same way of saying things, or expressing an opinion....you can almost set your watch by it. That's all. I'm certain it's not stalking. It's easy to become familiar with other posters 'styles'.

That lady was Elizabeth Margaret ("Bessie") Braddock ...

Braddock was elected a Member of Parliament on the Labour ticket for Liverpool Exchange at the 1945 election and served for 24 years. Sometimes the quote is attributed to Viscountess Nancy Astor, but that is in error. Nevertheless, Churchill also had a run-in with the Viscountess herself.

Vicountess Astor said: “Sir, if you were my husband, I would give you poison.”

Churchill's response was: “If I were your husband I would take it.”

Her husband was the Waldorf Astor.
