Gotta Go Cruisin Posted June 4, 2010 #601 Share Posted June 4, 2010 Hey Rev, It is what it is...Like I said before enjoy your Cruise and your 6 "Formal Nights". I am not opposed to them because people obviously do enjoy them. I am really quite a tolerant person and see no reason to segregate anyone who does not deserve to be. In my Opinion people not dressed like you don't deserve to be sequestered, but hey that's just me. I know this is an area we will never agree on and I'm good with that. Enjoy your Cruise and I will enjoy mine. I have just never been a Kool-Aid drinker. BTW, the word Bombastic as in "The Bombastic Reverend" means Pretentious. Alida Posted June 4, 2010 #602 Share Posted June 4, 2010 Yes, I want to continue it. there are so few places nowadays that we can get dressed up. thank heavens there is a choice for those who don't want to, but it should be left for those who like to get fancy. Taxguy77 Posted June 4, 2010 #603 Share Posted June 4, 2010 Additionally, I so rarely get to wear anything on dress-up occasions other than my "uniform." I enjoy getting to put on a Tuxedo and a bow tie and be a "civilian." True, I often wear clericals on Formal Nights, but that's more for convenience sake and variation than anything else. I enjoy how I feel dressing up, and being among others who are also playing "dress up" helps me to enjoy it even more. It amazes me the STRONG opinions people have on this subject! Assuming one believes in "Rules are Rules" one either follows them or looks for an alternative. In cruising, several lines have no formal nights and they range from lower cost than HAL to much higher cost. Different strokes for different folks. (Would you believe I made that up? Maxwell Smart.) I've been on three lines that did not have a formal night and enjoyed every cruise. When I saw an itinerary on HAL I couldn't refuse I bought it without trying to change the ship's procedures. I have never owned "formal wear", and my suit no longer fits :( but I have a dark blazer and some dress shirts and saw those fit within the dress code, so I packed them! We did not get fixed dining and after one night with some folks from CC meet & greet and a second try at the MDR, DW and I decided the Lido was MUCH more pleasent, so my ties and good dress shirts were never taken out of the luggage.:D What has always amazed me are the few men who wear Tshirts to the MDR! They couldn't get on a good golf course like that!
world~citizen Posted June 4, 2010 #604 Share Posted June 4, 2010 ...But, hey ... in-between cruises is there really anything better to do? Well, lets see. There are widows, orphans, the sick and those who are confined in prison. Shall I continue, or does that give you a pretty good start?:D Smooth sailing to you rev... In my Opinion people not dressed like you don't deserve to be sequestered, but hey that's just me. I know this is an area we will never agree on and I'm good with that. I have not stated that people who don't dress up on Formal Nights should be "segregated" or "sequestered" away. On this thread I stated what is the case on HAL: that, sometimes, the staff will not admit to the MDR those who are not attired in accord with the formal night code. Wether or not I approve is immaterial to the fact that the staff does, sometimes, do it. I have just never been a Kool-Aid drinker. I understand the metaphor you're using. Do you intend to apply all of the negative, judgmental, condemnatory baggage that it contains? BTW, the word Bombastic as in "The Bombastic Reverend" means Pretentious. Bombastic: adj. "blustering, turgid, verbose, orotund, high-flown, high-sounding, overwrought, pretentious, ostentatious, grandiloquent; informal highfalutin, puffed up; rare fustian." The title "The Bombastic Reverend" was given to me a long time ago by visitors to this board from elsewhere on CC. They were talking about me elsewhere on CC and making reference to me as writing unnecessarily long posts with unnecessarily complex sentence structure and vocabulary. In context, "verbose" and "overwrought" would apply, but probably not "pretentious." I adopted the title out of contrariness (it made 'em mad), and have kept it ever since. :)
Taxguy77 Posted June 4, 2010 #607 Share Posted June 4, 2010 :DThe more things change, the more they stay the same. The faces and screen names may change, but the arguments, points, finger-pointing and name-calling all seems to be recycled. It kills time, and is carbon-neutral.:p

I really think however you choose to dress on a cruise, at the grocery store, in Church is really your decision and yours alone. Do what works for you. HAL certainly has the right to dictate dress code, it's their ships. I just don't agree and don't accept that they should be able to treat some people as second class citizens, but again it's their ships they can do what they want. That is my position in a nutshell. :)
Rare Copper10-8 Posted June 4, 2010 #613 Share Posted June 4, 2010 Hey Rev; time to get some more counseling from Ruth re: dam dress codes. cruz chic Posted June 5, 2010 #617 Share Posted June 5, 2010 . I just don't agree and don't accept that they should be able to treat some people as second class citizens, but again it's their ships they can do what they want. That is my position in a nutshell. :) Sorry but how are they doing that? There is a dress code published. I'm sure that you have read it. You could possibly get into the dining room on a formal night wearing a hoodie. I've seen it happen. I don't enjoy dressing up really but I do it because I have respect for others and myself. I always get compliments and I enjoy that. We used to have a formal dress code at work and now it's gone to casual. I still dress better then the policy dictates. Some people think it's ok to wear whatever they found on the floor that morning. It's very strange to me.
Gotta Go Cruisin Posted June 5, 2010 #618 Share Posted June 5, 2010 Sorry but how are they doing that? Dress Formal, Dine in the MDR, dress less than formal dine in the Lido, then go back to your room for the rest of the evening. That's the policy. I would think that is second class treatment, but maybe I'm wrong. If it were just a dining issue maybe I could deal with it, but no it's a whole "Formal Evening" Issue. I don't see the issue or how HAL is treating you any less than anyone else.

You could hang out at the Lido pool and "will" the dolphins, polar bears or penguins (depending on what dam ship you're on) to come alive, or...................you could spend time on any of the "open decks" and watch the submarine races, play a game of basketball, paddle tennis, shuffleboard, become an expert in how the magrodome operates, you know, stuff like that;)

Same offering to people not dressed "Formally" would be a start. HAL policy...Passengers not dressed "Formally" are not allowed to participate in any of the activities (Casino, Lounges, Shows) that leaves few options. (Cabin and Hot Tubs) I guess I could drag my suit along, but what if that's just not good enough for the ??? Then what? Where does it stop? CowPrincess Posted June 5, 2010 #625 Share Posted June 5, 2010 Something about the recent "turn" of this thread is making me think of the adage "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer".
