From NCL's web site:

NCL guests can also be contacted on our ships by calling 1.888.NCSHIPS (1.888.627.4477) from the USA. For the rest of the world please dial 1.732.335.3280. When guests are contacted with the ship via satellite, they can be reached directly, if they are in their stateroom. If not, a message about the incoming call will be delivered to their stateroom and then they can call back* the shore via satellite.

When calling from the United States: Dial 1.888.NC SHIPS (627.4477), select the ship, and enter your credit card information. When Calling from outside the United States: Dial 1.732.335.3280, select the ship, and enter your credit card information.

*Please use American Express, MasterCard and Discover Card, only.

You can also take your cell phone. They can call you and get immediate contact with you. Computer is so-so. If someone sent an email in the morning, you would not get it until you checked it, maybe at night?

Are all cellphones able to receive calls or only certain plans--do you need international calling? We have US cellular

You need to make sure your cell phone plan can do international roaming. Just call your cell phone company to make sure it is activiated.

Does NCL send you anything explaining all this, or is it just our responsibility for check the website for this information? I only cruised once before and it was on HAL. Before we left they mailed me a packet and in it was the information on how someone back home could contact you on the ship. I was just wondering about that this morning and did a search and found this topic. I did get a welcome packet from NCL, but I did not notice ship contact information. Will NCL be sending me anything else?

I thought it was in the welcome packet.

These days with most people carrying a cell phone, or doing email, I am thinking the $7 a minute calling the ship thing is not used very much.

And, there are very, very few emergencies that anybody can do anything about anyways.
