faith31617 Posted July 29, 2010 #28 Share Posted July 29, 2010 A friend of mine is on that cruise and I sent her a message yesterday and asked about it......3 hours ago she responded and said that it was a worker and that he was on the top deck working and the wind blew him off. She also said that he is in stable condition. To the person who witnessed him falling, I am so sorry.....that will be a hard thing to get over seeing, if at all possible. Froufie Posted July 29, 2010 #30 Share Posted July 29, 2010 Was it really bad weather? or high winds? I always tell people how hard it is to just 'fall' off a ship - but if you can be blown off the top deck by the wind.....well that's pretty scary? Bizarre....whenever I have been on a ship and the weather/wind was that bad, everyone was prevented from going on deck. What was this, a rogue breeze???? faith31617 Posted July 29, 2010 #32 Share Posted July 29, 2010 Was it really bad weather? or high winds? I always tell people how hard it is to just 'fall' off a ship - but if you can be blown off the top deck by the wind.....well that's pretty scary? I can tell you from personal experience we were on Ecstasy a couple of years ago and the wind was blowing very hard when we were leaving Cozumel (so rough that all water including beach excursions were cancelled) we went all the way up to the top deck where the walking course and mini golf is, there other people up there as well as a worker and we decided to get to a lower deck because it was blowing us all over the place, we were hanging on for dear life. The next day we went to the Verandah Deck and it was all we could do to get off of it by foot and not air....lol. This is what my friend said......The man blew off off the top deck (worker). They rescued him and he is in stable condition. Very scarey. The winds and seas were too rough to get to HMC!!!

simkoreb Posted July 29, 2010 #34 Share Posted July 29, 2010 If there was a body taken off, it wasn't necessarily the man who fell....people can die on cruises from other circumstances.
Decca Posted August 1, 2010 #35 Share Posted August 1, 2010 I just got back last night from this cruise and would llike to share what I saw happen. My wife and I were getting ready to go to breakfast when I heard yelling outside. Yelling on a cruise ship is normal with all the partying going on but this was early in the morning which is what caught my attention. I stepped out onto my 6th floor balcony when I heard people yelling, "man overboard". I looked down at the water and directly under my balcony I saw a pair of shoes floating, a few feet farther I saw a jacket floating in the water and just to the right of the jacket was a lifeless body under the water. It was completly submerged and not moving at all. It appeared to be a black male and he his arms were down by his sides, my immediate thought was he was dead. A few feet north of the body was a red life perserver someone had thrown near him. The ship was still moving slow as we were just arriving at Half moon cay . The body continued down the length of the ship until it hit the wake of the propellers and it appeared to finally surface. It was then when I first heard the announcement "Bravo Bravo" which I assumed was the code for man overboard. The cruise director then got on the PA system excited and out of breath made an anouncement that we currently had a man overboard situation. The next announcement was man overboard starboard side. At this point I had lost sight of the body but a life boat was launched near the bow and began searching for the man. They went directly to the life persever and could not find him. A few minutes later they spotted him and tryed pulling him into the boat. He was still lifeless and was giving no assistance to his rescue. It took both crewman to get his body in the boat. They layed him out in the boat which we could see because the large doors were still open and you can see everything inside. The man lay there on the floor and still no movement. The crewman did not assist him and instead drove the boat quickly back to the ship. Before the man was even on the ship the cruise director already came on the P.A and stated he was in medical care and was OK. I said out loud, "he didnt look ok to me". My neighbor in the next balcony who heard me said, "he didnt look ok to me either". Less the 5 minutes later the captain came on the P.A. system and stated the man was in stable condition and that we could not dock at Half moon cay because the tenders that would pick us up where at a different location because of a storm and we could not get to the island , we would now be heading to our next port San Juan PR. Later we heard from another worker on the ship that his name was Remmy and he was having problems with his relationship and jumped off the ship. He was a sound mixer for carnival. We later heard someone had read in the San Juan newspaper that the captain made a quick decision not to dock at half moon cay and needed to get the body off the ship. We also heard about the fight in the casino but that was a seperate incident and that both parties involved were removed from the ship in san juan. I also know my neighbor video taped the whole incident so i would not be suprised if it showed up on youtube soon.
fjamods Posted August 1, 2010 #36 Share Posted August 1, 2010 I was on the ship too and it was pretty scary. I had no idea what was happening until the cruise director made the announcement. One of my friend we traveled with said he saw most of it and the man was in the water for about 45 minutes total. I saw them pull him out of the water and he didn't appear to be moving. My friend said he saw the man moving. They later made the announcement he was OK like Decca said. The story we heard thru one of the staff was he was a Carnival employee that had relationship troubles.
jlc22043 Posted August 1, 2010 Author #37 Share Posted August 1, 2010 For those of us on the ship...I'm sort of surprised there was no official word from carnival or it didn't show up in the news. Also I was wandering if there was any legal liability on carnivals behalf if they had said we weren't going to port because of the incident. Don't you guys think we would have known much earlier if it truly was weather related?
Decca Posted August 1, 2010 #38 Share Posted August 1, 2010 Yes it was a scary situation and I feel really bad for him and his family and all the people who witness it. Our vacation was ruined as it did for others like Jadewhiskey. All the money we all spent to get away and relax and unfortuanatley the only memoiries we will have of this trip will be a nighmare I would rather have done without. Carnival should really compensate us with an enjoyable cruise we all paid good money for. I do plan on writing carnival a letter but I do not think it will do any good. Hi Decca, It was a horrible thing to witness. I did talk to many crew members about it but nobody ever interviewed me regarding the incident... I was in Suite 7315. I was mid-ship and had full view of EVERYTHING... I also noticed that nobody was working on him in the rescue boat... I thought it was strange that they weren't even attempting CPR or anything for that matter... I pray that he is alright - but, deep down I fear that he is not.... Everytime I went out to my balcony and looked to the left - I could see the incident play over and over again in my head. As far the posting regarding 9/11... Was it employees of the Twin Towers that made them collapse??? NO.... This was an employee of Carnival who did this... I should not have had to watch him fall over - and the story of him falling while working... or, he was blown over... I don't think so... It was a beautiful day - warm... Sun shining... No wind.... One thing I found odd while watching him fall - he had NO shoes on... So, how many deck hands work without their shoes on? His shoes and coat were in his hands when he fell... I have been looking for anything online about this - but, have had no luck yet... I do pray that he is OK... Thanks... Much appreciated to everyone who posted kind words... jlc22043 Posted August 2, 2010 Author #46 Share Posted August 2, 2010 Jade I'm with you...it was too beautiful that day to not be able to pull into port. I just felt the weather thing was far fetched. We weren't supposed to be into San Juan until the day after that two days later...they wanted to get them off the ship asap. Not sure if you heard of the weddings that were supposed to take place there....I was one of the couples. Let's just say it didn't happen. Btw I would have felt better had they said we couldn't pull into port because of the situation that had occurred....not because of weather....I just feel that would have been more understandable

Not sure if you heard of the weddings that were supposed to take place there....I was one of the couples. Let's just say it didn't happen. Hi Jami, I did hear that there was a wedding or two that didn't happen... My husband said that he saw a group of people talking to a crew member about a wedding that was supposed to be happening at Half Moon Cay - I wonder if it was you he saw... That is too bad... Not a good way for you to start a new life with someone - you probably brought a bunch of people with you too... Ridiculous... Did Carnival do anything to help you out... Were you at least able to get married? I was really looking forward to seeing the island - I did see a few people getting married on the ship - were you one of them? But, I agree with you... - I think they wanted to get him off the ship ASAP... I personally think that if he survived and was in stable condition that they would have had the coast guard come in and get him... I have seen all kinds of video's online where someone was really ill and the coast guard came and picked them up... We were pulling into Half Moon Cay when it happened... So, I agree - it really wasn't the weather... It was a beautiful day... The story of the currents was BS... A ship that huge that can't anchor due to currents - I didn't buy it... I am really sorry to hear that the wedding was a fiasco... Were you able to make other plans? But, I agree - this was not the vacation I expected - nor you... I guess most people don't plan on crying on vacation - or having weddings cancelled... Thanks... Talk soon...
jlc22043 Posted August 2, 2010 Author #49 Share Posted August 2, 2010 Carnival couldn't help us and only wanted to give us a fifty percent refund of the wedding expenses. They told us no legal wedding could be performed. No help from carnival what so ever. Well apparently the wedding department does not have a clear understanding of marriage laws because we were able to be married legally in st thomas at the very last minute by a local officiant we contacted while in San Juan. Thank goodness i brought my ipad but i paid a boat load of money for internet access trying to set up a last minute wedding! Let's just say this whole cruise was a roller coaster of emotions. Hmc held a special place in our hearts because we got engaged there. To some degree I'm glad we didn't get married that day because of having to share our special day with something so tragic. Plus we both have children and had other children travelling with us. Very hard explaining the situation to a 6, 10, 12, and 15 year old. It will be a long time before I cruise again....I hate to say. It was also very scary seeing how a very large man got swept out so quickly....it really makes a parent think of some awful scenarios in their heads! I'm glad that you were able to get everything squared away (at your own expense - ridiculous... they should have assisted you in someway...) but, Congratulations on the wedding... and 50%... that's just crazy... I was traveling with my two daughters - 8 and 5... They witnessed the "rescue"... After seeing that - they understood how dangerous it could be... If they wanted to play on the balcony... I wouldn't let them out of my sight... They had to sit on their butts the entire time... Even on deck - I wanted their hands at all times... It was scary... This was my first cruise ever... So, I have nothing to compare it too - hopefully if I sail again - it will be much smoother... As a parent - how did you feel Camp Carnival went on this trip? My kids cried and didn't want to go... I took them up a couple times and they were crying when I would pick them up... I was told by people that have gone on lots of cruises that the kids would never want to leave... Mine didn't want to go... Did your kids have any complaints? I am just curious... Thanks - talk soon... Again - I'm glad that you were able to get everything done for your wedding and Congratulations again. JadeWhiskey
