Anyone do a cruise to nowhere?

I'm thinking of booking a cruise to nowhere on the Miracle out of New York next October. I'd take my 2 younger kids who will be 13 and my sister who has special needs.

Looking for anyone who has done one of these short cruises. How was it? Lots of kids? What's the mood? Is it partiers or older folks? I'm guessing nothing will be going on outside so what does everyone do? How about the dining room? I think I would do anytime dining so I could work around my sister's needs and make sure we have our own table. What about the shows?

I tried to do a search on here but couldn't isolate cruise to nowhere so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Kathy

very few kids. Older crowd, partying heavily.

OK thanks- Kerryman

I see they are a little more pricey per day. I may think about NY to Canada- but wanted to try a short one to see how she tolerates everything.

You're welcome, we're also looking at doing a 4 day from NYC to Canada in June. We did one this last June and had a fantastic time. The ES pricing now is very good.

We did a cruise to nowhere over last 4th of July weekend due to Hurricane Alex in the Gulf. There were more kids than usual mainly because it was a holiday weekend and in the summer. We still had our early seating at dinner and they did have the shows. Everything was pretty much the same except no port call. When we disembarked, there were no customs to go through since we had not made a port stop. It originally was a 4-day cruise but shortened to a 3-day cruise. We cruised out into the Gulf and then came back. Since we love sea days, we loved it. The weather was perfect.

Just a moment ago I priced a 5 day to Canada in Sept and with ES it's under $1500 for 4 ppl including taxes- definitely worth the price. I wanted to bring my 2 youngest on the cruise because my oldest is going on a school trip.

they are overpriced, and way too short.

but it's still cheaper than two nights on the town in manhattan.

mostly yuppies (or is that term outdayed?).

I would pay the price to go somewhere- We have done two of these CTN but went when the prices were more affordable.

There will be a lot going on and dont know your sisters needs but if its one of stimulation to avoid this is not what you want to take.

Its more fast paced then a longer cruise-- people are trying to cram as much into the 2 days as they would a longer one.

You will get two vegas style shows. THe dining room is the same as it is for a longer cruise (although I bet the anytime dining gets pretty full on these cruises--- would your sister be ok with waiting for periods of time. (last cruise we waited over 45 miniutes and that was for a 6:45 time we went.)

On the two cruises we went on I can not recall ever seeing a kid onboard-- sorry.

The weather was rough the both times went-- the one weekend it rained the entire time.

Cooler so no one was in the pools- that 13 year old may be quite bored onboard.

That age group is rough even on a longer cruise

It seemed everyone was there to enjoy the ship which is different than normal since most of the time normally everyone is planning on the ports and what to do. So it seemed more relaxed and a lot more participation in ship activities...

I've done it twice from Norfolk. Definitely more of a party crowd. There were a few onboard who didn't sleep the whole cruise I think. It's ridiculously short. We sailed on a Saturday afternoon at 4:30pm or so and were back tied up at the dock at 7am Monday morning so it's not even a full two days. It's ok for a weekend getaway if you can get a cheap last minute deal but I don't think it's really representative of the typical cruise. You don't ever get a chance to experience the social aspect of a cruise where you get to know some of the crew and your fellow passengers and people are trying to cram an entire cruise of experiences into 36 hours.

They do have production shows both nights and the second night was elegant night on both of ours although very few people dressed up. Other than the partiers, the other big draw was the casino. They were lined up sitting in front of tables and slots waiting for the casino to open after sailing.

One other thing - don't know about NY but in Norfolk there are no porters on the CTNs so you have to be able to carry your own luggage on and off the ship.

Thanks for all the replies- I think I've ruled out a CTN-

Serene my sister is unpredictable unfortunately- sometimes she can wait and tolerate stimulation and sometimes an unknown (to me) trigger will make her upset and she'll scream, hit herself and cause a huge commotion. She had recent heart surgery and sits in a wheelchair for distances but can walk OK for short distances. Another reason I wanted to book a trip is that she is off oxygen

My twin 13 yos are a consideration and I don't want them to be bored and of course school schedules- I'll figure something out
