So Excited Table for 2

Recommended Posts

We're on Monarch on Jan 31st and I emailed Dining Services back in October about the possibility of a table for 2 in the MDR and got the standard "Your request has been received, we do our best to accomodate requests" type answer. I thought I'd give the email another shot since we're much closer to sailing and got a very quick reply letting me know we are now confirmed as a table for 2 on our sailing! I generally do not like dining with people that I don't know all that well, and this being my boyfriends first cruise he was leary of dining with a group of unknown people so this has just made our day!

25 DAYS TO GO! WAHOOOOOOO :D

I don't see what the problem is, or why he be leary about dining with others? Thats how it is done on traditional cruising.

The "problem" is we like to eat with eachother not a bunch of strangers and I don't think I should be banished to the Windjammer or Room Service to do this. My boyfriend is leary of eating with a group of strangers because this is our vacation and he (nor I) want to be forced to eat with people we don't know (or could possibly not have much in common with). I know they do their best to group people but it doesn't always work out that way. My friends last cruise her and her husband (38 & 30) got seated at a table of 8 and the next youngest couple at the table were 65...they couldn't switch tables and basically got stuck with people they had no common interests in. I don't want to be forced into socializing, thats all.

All I was doing was praising RC for getting this set up for us.

someone once made a great point, they said when you walk into a restaurant, you don't sit down with strangers for your meal. and to make a blanket statement that cruising is about meeting new people is ignorant.

Cruising, or traveling in general, is about whatever each traveler wants it to be:

1. seeing new places

2. seeing places that AREN'T home

3. meeting new people

4. experiencing new cultures

5. being pampered, not having to cook, clean

6. etc etc etc

To each his own. If you don't like to see people eating alone, don't look.....

Don't blame you... if it's just my husband and I, we like sitting by ourselves and enjoying the company we have together. We don't get to sit and eat dinner together usually, so it's a nice treat. That's why I do my time dining for the guarenteed 2-seat table and flexibility in hours to eat!

It's personal preference. That are many and various reasons why some prefer not to dine with strangers. If you don't mind then go for it! For the rest of us RCL provides a choice.

Another big "Plus" in having a table for 2 is you can usually eat and get out fairly quick. No waiting for the others to finish eating before the next course. We're often walking out while other tables are waiting for their deserts.

Or for others to show up! It is amazing how many people wander to the table late (even after 7pm) for early seating and expect the wait staff to get them caught up with the rest of the table. Do people have no sense of how rude this is?

So true! Up until our last cruise, we'd always dined with strangers at a table for 8 and found dinner used to take 2 hours or more sometimes. We always had late sitting so half the time we'd miss the start of a show due to still being in the dining room.

On our last cruise, we had a table for two and we enjoyed it so much! Yes, we were also out while others were still waiting for dessert plus we enjoyed each other's company. We have requested MTD for our Voyager cruise next week and hope to enjoy a table for two again! :)

This is so true! Our first cruise was our honeymoon and my husband and I had a table for two. It was like a "date night" every night and we loved it. Although we didn't rush it, the meal went at our pace and it was nice not having to wait for others. On our last cruise, we cruised with a group and had a table for 10. There was a significant difference on how long the meals took! Even if everyone shows up on time (which rarely happens) service for 10 just takes longer than service for 2! I enjoy talking around the dinner table but I also enjoy being outside and enjoying the cruise!

Congrats to the OP on your table for 2! Enjoy it!

Had you not ever thought of MTD?

Well first off I like the late seating so thats not a problem. I have no interest in MTD as I like having one waiter that gets to know my preferences and I have one waiter who gets the tip for their services to me. If they do an outstanding job they get even more then standard. I know with MTD that a lot of times you end up with the same person, but not always from what I understand. What if that one night that it wasn't the same person was a horrible night and service was bad...I just don't want to chance that.

I really don't see why 2 people now are taking issue with me wanting a table for 2. I'm sorry but what if we got sat at a table with people who aren't in a good mood, or don't speak or understand the same language, or a million other things. I'm not chancing my dining experience on someone else's mood etc. And let apologize ahead of time for this I don't want to sound snarky but my guess is the 2 people who are taking issue with me asking for a table for 2 are exactly the type of people I'm hoping to avoid sitting with at dinner every night when I'm on this cruise to celebrate my anniversary/our birthdays with each other. My boyfriend owns a restaurant and I work a part time job in a different one at night we get very few meals together, I want to enjoy our "date nights" as another poster put it without the influence of others.

Don't worry! You're reasons for wanting a table for 2 are totally understandable! It really bothers me when people argue with people who want tables for 2 and say things like, "The reason for cruising is to meet people." Maybe it is for them, it definitely isn't for me. I personally can't stand making small talk and I can't imagine that dinner with total strangers would be anything other than small talk. Enjoy your table for 2 and don't worry what anyone says! Happy Birthday/Anniversary! Have fun!

Really? Seriously? I'm glad you know "how it is done on traditional cruising". Good for you! But I'm a little concerned about your intellect if you cannot possibly see why anyone might not like this.

I love responses like yours. Am I supposed to believe that you are really that ignorant, that you can't imagine someone wanting something different than you might, or, should I just assume you feel the need to pass judgment in a lame, passive aggressive fashion?

Seriously dude, lighten up....

In case you have not noticed, traditional cruising has changed and will continue to change.

For our first 17 cruises, we had traditional dining. Our past three cruises have been "My Time Dining" with a table for two. Our future cruises will be that way as well because we like it!

Just last night I was watching an old Alfred Hitchcock movies from the 30's and much of the action was on a cruise ship. Gentlemen wore a full suit and hat and women dresses, a hat, and white gloves when they went ashore (and this was in Egypt, not exactly a cool climate). You certainly do not see that today. Times change. Some of us can accept it. Some of us can not.

Put me in the table to two main dining time crowd. I find it to be a much more intimate and enjoyable experience.

I've always booked direct with Royal and have been able to get a table for two, however some upcoming cruses were booked with a TA. I called Royal to confirm that they had us down for a 2 topper and they told me they couldn't edit the dining reservation and I need to call my TA to confirm. Has anyone had any issues with requesting a table for two via a TA before?

I've never tried e-mailing before, but I think I might give it a try as it gets closer to the sail date..

I honestly find it really odd that some posters find it 'odd' people requesting a table for 2..What is wrong with that ?

Sorry, I am really confused by the comments - Am I missing something ?

When we were on our first 3 night cruise we didnt know anything about dining etc and just turned up and we were asked if we wanted a big or small table, immediately I said small as the tought of sharing my table with others just didnt appeal...As it was they sat us at a big table but it was only the 2 of us for all 3 nights...:D

When we did our first 14 nighter last year we also asked and got a table for 2...

Next year we will be requesting a table for 8 but thats because there's 8 of us in our party this time...:D

I am all for socialising and meeting new people but I cannot personally think of anything worse than sitting having dinner with complete strangers...

Having nothing in common doesnt particularly bother me too much as I dont really make 'new best firends' with people Ive only known for a few nights but I certainly wouldnt have a go at anyone who likes the complete opposite and love to sit at big tables and meet new people, especially if your on your own...In fact, go for it, I say...

Have a brilliant cruise and enjoy those cozy dinners for 2!!
