Radiance Jan 8 cruise delayed

I hope I dont get raked over the coals for this and I MOST CERTAINLY use the hand sanitizer stations every time i go by one but arent alcohol based sanitizers virtually worthless against noro?

I just wonder how many get a false sense of security and let the hand sanitizers sub for good and thorough hand washing thus making the virus spread even worse.

I sail on this ship in less than a month. Im not really worried but I am a little concerned. I have heard before that it can take multiple thorough cleanings to get rid of noro.

If the wait staff serving people in the Windjammer cuts down on the spreading of the virus, I wonder why they dont just serve people all the time? I have seen some very unsanitary practices in the buffets on both cruises I have been on so far and honestly, it makes me want to avoid the buffet altogether.......The only time I ate in the WJ on my last cruise was the first day and that was because it was the only place to eat that was open.

Please dont flame me........Im just curious here?

We also just got off Radiance. My wife unfortunately was one of the ones that got sick. The medical facility did a really good job and got her medication that stopped the symptoms. The symptoms only lasted a day and she is felling fine now. The ship's crew was doing their best to try and keep the ship clean. Frankly I'm not sure how she got it. We are both very clean and we both wash our hand regularly along with using the hand sanitation. Just one of those unlucky things.

Your wife was probably one of those who pushed an elevator button or held the hand rail while walking down. I'm serious.

Use the back of your hand on the rail if you must steady yourself and push the elevator button with your knuckle.

My best guess would be for the fact that the staff it takes to serve everyone. They had crew from all over the ship helping serve the food. I saw maintenance crew, officers, and entertainers all in the windjammer serving food and handing out plates, etc.

So sorry your wife got sick, but am glad that they were able to relieve her symptoms. Do you know what they gave her? I have heard before that nothing worked but to wait it out.

Add to that the way the ships have now arranged the buffet serving areas. They are set up to make it easy to reach from the outside. It would be hard to have people line up for so many different stations with no exact place to serve or stream the lines. It would be a mess and take forever.

They'd need to go back to the old-fashioned style of buffet arrangement - like a Piccadilly cafeteria.

I think more people would head for the MDR or other eating venues if they did this which might be a good thing.

The gave her a shot of phentergin. It was supposed to relieve the nausea and vomiting. They also gave her Imodium for the diarrhea.

I know it's been linked to already, but I thought I'd post the statement:

Radiance of the Seas, which began its sailing in Tampa, Florida on Monday, January 3, is experiencing an elevated number of persons with a gastrointestinal illness. Over the course of that sailing, 150 guests and 3 crew members have experienced the illness, thought to be a Norovirus. Those affected by the short-lived illness responded well to over-the-counter medication being administered onboard the ship.

At Royal Caribbean International, we have high health standards for all our guests and crew. Therefore, in an abundance of caution, when Radiance of the Seas arrived in Tampa on Saturday, January 8, we conducted an extensive and thorough sanitizing onboard the ship and within the cruise terminal, to help prevent any illness from affecting the subsequent sailing.

My doctor was recently on a cruise and said he took phenergan for he and his wife in case they got sea sick. I suggested to HIM that maybe it was overkill and they should just go get meclizine for free at guest relations. :p

I guess it's easy for doctors to bring their own prescription drugs.

Maybe we can pick some up for ourselves in Mexico. Or maybe you need your own syringe.

Poor thing. I'm glad she's feeling better now. I hope the rest of your cruise was nice.

Thanks, she is back to normally and feeling fine now. The rest of the cruise was great other than the last night. I plan to write a review shortly so everyone can hear what happened.

For those sailing today the last thing you should be thinking about is an OBC. If given the option to sail or not I would not go. I went thru this on the Freedom a few years back and it was disgusting the things that I saw.

There were 160 passengers sick on the last cruise. The ship needs to aired out and cleaned for 2 days for it to be free of the virus.

Good luck.

Will they let people check their luggage? Where are you supposed to wait if you arrived that morning by plane? Can't imagine a couple thousand people dragging their suitcases around that little mall for a couple of hours.

Duke 052-I AGREE WITH YOU 1000%. I just got off Radiance this morning. It was not a pretty site. I also came down with it. I would not wish it on my worse enemy. (Well maybe LOL). It ruins your whole cruise and you become so paranoid, you cant wait to get off the germ infested ship. We were told that the CDC was going to board this am. They had so many hours to get it sanitized to the CDD"S standards or NO cruise this week. After experiencing this situtuation, I think I dont want to cruise for awhile. You are stuck on the ship and nowhere to go to escape it.

I agree.....welcome aboard lunch, pool, making Spa, Chops or Portifino reservations, enjoying your first drink of the day......just the pure relaxation and excitement!

Yeah, to me, I have definitely lost a day. We typically get on as soon as we can -- 11:30 am or so -- so I'm losing at least half a day of fun and relaxation that I normally would have. I look forward to the casino and with the ship sailing at 10, it won't open probably till 11. That's my bedtime!

When you book a 5-day cruise, they count the day of embarktation as the first day. So my 5-day cruise has been changed to at the most a 4 1/2 day cruise.

But all that said, I'm not going to throw a fit if we don't get any credit. It is what it is and I'm just lucky that I am able to take a cruise now and then.

The truth is...we book it by nights but the cruise compass counts by days beginning on boarding day. The way I always see it though is I book a 7 night and I get 6 days out of it. They can call it day 1, but to me I don't think of it as a day until we leave port and by then it's night anyway. :)

In other words, I get on as early as I can but if I missed the whole first day, I wouldn't be mad, expect any compensation or worry about it. The cruise kicks in to me when I wake up that first morning on the ship.

Wow, how awful and I feel so badly for everyone impacted; either on the crud cruise or those waiting/hoping to go on the next one.

We're booked on Radiance the 17th. Obviously hoping there are no further issues.

Glad I happened to see this thread on Facebook! I was just on Royal Caribbean's site for something else and at that point there was no mention of it!

My family was booked on the only Disney cruise that was cancelled because of the norovirus back in 03...It sucked at the time, especially since we were already down in Orlando at Disney World....We ended up paying an extra week for a hotel in Disney and sailing out the following week...the virus ended up costing us an extra 2 grand but we went with the flow and had a great time on the cruise and was happy we did not get sick...I know it can sometimes take a few sailings before they get the virus under control...let us hope that there will be no prob on the cruise this week...Good Luck everyone
