Smoking in cabins

I don't see the connection between people who go to bed early, people who don't spend anything in the bar - and smoking.

Just to clarify - Most people who smoke also drink = more money spent in bar. Ask any barman on any cruise ship and you will find they agree. I really want to point out that although I smoke, I do not want to bother anyone and all I ask for is 1 bar where smoking is allowed. I hope I am a considerate smoker and even feel uncomfortable in a smoking area which is near non smoking. Yes, keep us segregated, no problem, but let us have 1 nice area.

I have been accused in another thread of not being too nice or whatever, in this thread.

if anyone felt I was being rude about them just cause they don't smoke etc. I apologise.

I really felt that I have tried to be balanced in this thread, and respectful of others. Even tho I feel some have delibertly been snipey about grammar etc.

I do like this forums a lot but some people spoil it.

Marty, you are on point! This is the best comment I've seen in quite some time. No rant, no flame, just plain speaking and a succinct POV. I wish that all posters would take this attitude without acrimony. That being said, I'm off the smoking topic again before the less tolerant ranters appear.

James90210 - I actually started with the other thread about the warning and, when I saw the comments about your thread, I read it, too, to see what the fuss was about.

I think you have been very fair and balanced throughout this thread. YOUR thread, I might add, so it seems you should feel free to comment as much as you like, whether it is to add to, defend, clarify or rebut any other comments.

I do not think you have been "whining" at all. Nor do I think that this is a thread that only "pro smoking people" have or would feel they could comment in, as someone implied. You have welcomed comments from both sides of the fence.

I just want to encourage you to stick with "CC" despite some of the snarky remarks flung at you, because there are some good people on here with great information. Like you and your ability to see both sides of a situation - too bad we can't all do that.

Happy future cruising to you!

Pay no attention, James. You have no need to apologize for anything. Just ignore anyone giving you a hard time and don't get dragged into an argument with someone just trying to insult you because he can't win the debate. ;)

I am sorry. There seem to be a lot of people posting on this thread who need to read the user guidelines which state:

It is important to remember that everyone makes mistakes at one time or another, and that there are many users who use English as a second language, especially on our Cruise Boards. There are also a number of people who suffer from learning disabilities and who have difficulty noticing their spelling mistakes. Do not make comments on the spelling and grammar of other users. It is simply not a productive expenditure of energies.

So try to ignore the ignorant and enjoy this forum, because it can be one of the most helpful I've ever read.

I do understand why you said this I really do.

That said I don't really agree. Smoker's also pay the same amount for the balcony. So why should we not be allowed to smoke out there?

Of course it would be frustrating if you can smell others smoke, and I have already said it is a bit of a concern for me.

But if I paid the large amount for a balcony I would want to be able to smoke on it.

If only Hal etc could find a way like others have suggested to make it certain balcony area's only.

The reason why smokers shouldn't be permitted to smoke on verandahs is because the smoke doesn't just blow out to sea -- it blows full-force directly onto your neighbor's Verandah. Smokers may think they're outside, but they're really not. Our verandah was overwhelmed by cigarette smoke coming from a chain smoker as far away as two or three cabins up the line! While it is certainly true that smokers should be able to have full enjoyment of their balconies just as any other paying passenger, with all due respect I don't think this means that smoking on a balcony should be part of the package, because it affects others' enjoyment of their verandahs.

It's difficult because even thought I would want to smoke on my balcony. I can fully appreciate what you have said..

It is food for thought for me anyway :)

Yes, keep us segregated, no problem, but let us have 1 nice area.

I've always wondered why the lines that allow smoking in the casino don't also designate the bars near it on the same deck to be smoking. The smoke from the casino drifts in anyway, so designating those bars as non-smoking is silly. It would seem to me to be a easy way to both give smokers an area like you desire and give those who want to avoid smoke the boundary they need to do so.

Regarding smoking in the rooms, as a non-smoker I would prefer it so there can't be any issue with the stale smoke that permeates everything when it can't escape. Balconies are another story ... I think allowing smokers to smoke on their balconies is a reasonable compromise, even though I've been driven from my balcony on occasion by them. That's a situation I can help alleviate by booking cabins that are more forward or on lower decks to reduce my exposure to the potential paths of drifting smoke, whereas with a smoke-infused cabin I cannot.

So why does your partner not want to smoke in the cabin onboard or inside the house at home?

Because they don't like the stench and the irritants in the smoke. By taking it onto the balcony, smokers can keep their own rooms fresh and free of the stench and irritants that they believe magically disappear when their smoke fills other people's balconies.

like a house, cabin or car lingers on carpet, walls, upholstery and clothing. Smoking outdoors disipates except for the people who sit around sniffing the air to find smoke. There's a lot of air around a ship and one cigarette can't affect it.

Is this a real question? Sorry if I'm assuming that most people are aware of this kind of consideration for others in the house.

My dad has smoked his entire adult life ever since he was a late teen in the US Navy. Growing up (my two brothers and I) he never once asked to smoke in the house. Ever. After we all left the nest he still never smoked in the house out of respect for my mother, who died in 1997. And 14 years after her death, and just having recently celebrated his 80th birthday, he still never smokes in the house he lives in by himself. I guess old habits (and courtesies) are hard to kick.
