SeaWatch Posted March 23, 2011 #28 Share Posted March 23, 2011 What about the non smokers next to you? Wouldn't it be more considerate to find a smoking area on a n outside deck? That is not even considering the fire issue!
Rare Hlitner Posted March 23, 2011 #29 Share Posted March 23, 2011 I guess there is some humor in smokers trying to get away from the smoke :) Hank
lollytw Posted March 23, 2011 #30 Share Posted March 23, 2011 Again, those who take issue with smoking on board HAL, why not write or call HAL about it, instead of telling everyone here what you don't like about it? It's not effective and only gets everyone stirred up. This is HAL's decision to allow smoking, and you're not going to make any changes by complaining here. :)
james90210 Posted March 23, 2011 Author #31 Share Posted March 23, 2011 I have looked at the ship lay out. still bit hard for me to gage how big a ship really is.. :D Is it safe to say that where ever my cabin is, I will be able to find somewhere to smoke within a few minutes walk? I don't mind walking somewhere if not too far.

james90210 Posted March 23, 2011 Author #33 Share Posted March 23, 2011 Thank you Joanie. Not a slow walker so maybe even less hehe. I haven't always smoked so I can see both sides. But as others said, this thread isn't meant to be about if you agree or disagree with me smoking on board etc. I just needed to know what my options were on board if my cabin was too smokey 'even for a smoker' :D

An open discussion on boards read by potential customers who are considering HAL's product is not. Policy changes (more commonly, small adjustments, since a major policy change is always about the $ and that's it) have more than one impetus. Discussions on public boards are one of them. This refers to all policies, not just smoking policies, BTW.

Joanie ...should not stand!;) My goodness, the 'slow-walking' lobby will be 'piping in' soon. I've met several 'evil' smokers aboard HAL ships that tend to walk rather slowly. Some things we must endure.;) These days I tend to walk slowly. Must be the 'sea air' or age perhaps? Life's too short. Be well. Bon Voyage & Godd Health! Get in touch with HAL. But HAL has made the kind of incremental changes I referred to in my post. You can no longer smoke in almost all lounges, and smoking on decks is restricted to specific areas. It wasn't that long ago that people here were clamoring for HAL to make those changes. A public forum visited by customers and potential customers is an (an, not the only) effective place to lobby for change in a product, regardless of whether you like that. james90210 Posted March 24, 2011 Author #44 Share Posted March 24, 2011 I don't mean this to sound dis respectful in any way. But if Hal do pay attention as you say. Then why not just start threads asking others to support changing smoking policy etc. Instead of people trying to take over a thread which is the exact opposite. dockrocker Posted March 24, 2011 #45 Share Posted March 24, 2011 I'm really not taking over a thread. I'm responding to a misstatement that someone else made. When she made it again, I corrected it again. That's all from me in this thread -- I've made my point to folks not inclined to binary thinking who may be reading this. The folks over there expressed a desire to have that offered as part of some fun exercise. Well, just got off a Celebrity cruise (I have done 8 with HAL and another HAL coming up in Oct, 2011) and, voila! , I noticed in the daily program that not only was free line dancing offered, but also a couple of "Zumba" classes. Strange coincidence? Do not think so! I do believe that the best way to get things across to the top brass is through CC, as long as we can keep things civil here, and also avoid unneeded censorship.:D

startwin Posted March 24, 2011 #49 Share Posted March 24, 2011 Like many things on the Official HAL Web Site some info is out dated such as the smoking policy for the following that I know personally about. You cannot smoke on all Outside decks. For instance, the Aft Promenade, the Forward Promenade and where there are signs with the International sign for no smoking. I also believe I saw No Smoking signs on the Observation Deck both forward and aft sections, but am not positive. I've been on Westerdam, Oosterdam and Nieuw Amsterdam and none of the Bars/Lounges/Night Clubs have there been any smoking allowed, other than the Sports/Casino Bar. Also on the Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam there is no smoking allowed in the "Retreat Cabanas area" except for 1 ash tray as you come out of the Crow's Nest. People who take the ashtrays to a non smoking area should have it pointed out to them, by crew or fellow passengers the correct side of the Sea View (Aft) Lido area. I've done it myself to fellow smokers. Joanie Evidently you need to contact HAL and let them know that their website is giving the wrong information to the cruising public. IRL_Joanie Posted March 24, 2011 #50 Share Posted March 24, 2011 Evidently you need to contact HAL and let them know that their website is giving the wrong information to the cruising public. I have sent an email to point out the inaccuracy, but have yet to hear from them on this matter. I also sent a snail mail letter to inform them and hope that maybe that will get them to change it. But, as you know, HAL seldom responds with more than a standard form email or letter. You have to keep in mind that HAL has deck plans that are also inaccurate and have been for years, so do you really think they will change something as insignificant as their policy regarding smoking on board their ships on the web site??
